As I delve into the lives of these former Grey’s Anatomy stars, it’s quite evident that they’ve left their mark on the medical drama landscape. Each one has embarked on a new journey post-Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, showcasing their versatility and talent in various roles.
Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington certainly didn’t know this is where they’d end up.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to shed some light on a recent event involving the writer of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Elisabeth Finch. Last month, on our favorite podcast iHeartRadio’s “Call It What It Is”, the actresses shared their honest reactions following her exposure for fabricating a cancer diagnosis. This revelation led to the creation of Peacock’s “Anatomy of Lies” documentary.
Camilla, who has portrayed Dr. Jo Wilson for 12 seasons on the medical drama, clarified to TopMob News that she had no intention of discussing her personal feelings about her character’s storyline. However, upon seeing the documentary, she felt annoyed because it seemed as though people were speculating or assuming aspects of the narrative that she believed should have been left for her to share herself.
Moreover, Jessica, who portrayed Dr. Arizona Robbins for nine seasons until her exit in 2017, also felt equally moved to express herself following the viewing of the Peacock miniseries.
After the release of the documentary, there were countless messages and phone calls coming in for me, she noted when discussing her decision to share her viewpoint. “It’s astonishing and almost unbelievable, like a wildly imaginative tale, yet it’s real,” she said, expressing her belief that people find it hard to accept as truth.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over the fact that the 48-year-old opened up about the therapeutic experience they had when discussing their responses alongside us fans. It was truly a remarkable moment!
She remarked, “It seemed like a genuine expression since it was drawn from our personal encounters.” This, she explained, was a reaction to something. After all, any form of media tends to be one-sided, doesn’t it? It’s primarily transmitting information. What we did here was more like an exchange or dialogue.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve found that the nurturing environment that Jessica and I have created over the past 13 years on our podcast, “Call It What It Is,” has been instrumental in making me feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics like this. This safe space we’ve cultivated allows us to share our thoughts openly and honestly, fostering a deeper understanding and connection between us.
She remembered considering not discussing the on-set incidents, but instead using the podcast as a platform to share, in a broader sense, her experiences with individuals similar to these, explaining their impact on her personally, and how those encounters have influenced her in the future.
In a consensus, the stars of Grey’s Anatomy expressed their gratitude for having the freedom to shape the storyline themselves.
Camilla pointed out, “Nobody seems to be acknowledging my feelings, but let me make this clear – I’m expressing them to you.” She added, “This part of it has turned out to be quite empowering for me.
Jessica underscored the point, “Don’t undervalue its strength – the ability to express yourself, to generate and debate ideas uniquely yours.

In the third season, Burke left Cristina at the altar without an explanation, later going on to win a Harper Avery Award at another location. He eventually settled in Zurich, Switzerland, where he established a high-tech hospital of his own. He married, started a family, and then in the tenth season, upon his retirement, he invited Cristina to take over his hospital.
Isaiah Washington departed the series following allegations that he used a derogatory term towards his costar T.R. Knight during an on-set dispute. His attempts to defend himself only worsened the situation until eventually, he was dismissed from the show. Interestingly, Washington and ABC reconciled, allowing him to rejoin the series in 2014. Notably, his major roles after this included Thelonious Jaha in The CW’s The 100, which ended with his character’s death in season five, and Starz’ critically praised P-Valley.
In the fourth season, Intern Norman faced assumptions that he was a hospital attendant because of his age, not an intern. A blunder occurred when he mistakenly informed a patient she was dying, and later, he suffered a stroke himself. After undergoing surgery to remove the blood clot, he made the decision to switch departments, moving to psychiatry instead.
Edward Herrmann, who was quite famously recognized for it, is chiefly remembered as Richard Gilmore from the popular series Gilmore Girls. He also made appearances in multiple episodes of shows like The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and even lent his voice to American Dad, before passing away in 2014.
In a different phrasing: During Bailey’s maternity leave, Sydney, the bubbly character who lived in Sydney, temporarily filled her role and became quite exuberant to the point of irritation for many. She also went out on a date with Derek at one stage, but then vanished around early season 4—now, it has been revealed in the season 21 trailer that Dr. Heron will reappear.
Recently, Kali Rocha has been featured in shows like Liv and Maddie, Man with a Plan, and will appear in an upcoming episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm set for release in 2024.
Among the most heart-wrenching stories on this list, towards the end of season five, George made a life-altering decision to become an army trauma surgeon. Just as he was embarking on this new path, he selflessly saved a woman from being run over by a bus, but unfortunately, he was hit instead. In a critical condition, he arrived at the hospital unrecognizable until he managed to scrawl his nickname, “007,” in Meredith’s hand using his finger. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save him, and he sadly passed away.
Following a series of challenging backstage periods, marked by incidents like Isaiah Washington reportedly using offensive language toward him, Knight faced difficulties with certain storylines involving George and was frustrated by George’s limited screen time during the initial part of season five. As a result, he decided to terminate his contract.
2017 saw a return of the knight to Shondaland, where he featured in an arc on The Catch. Additionally, he has been seen on The Good Wife, 11.22.63, Genius, and numerous other series. In 2019, he appeared on The Bravest Knight, followed by a role in the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant alongside Kaley Cuoco in 2020. Lastly, he made a brief return to Grey’s for a single episode to interact with Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.
In early season five, Erica Hahn ended both her relationship with Callie Torres and her job at their hospital, after discovering that Callie had chosen not to disclose an incident involving Izzie Stevens and a patient of Erica’s. The situation revolved around Izzie cutting the LVAD wire of a patient named Denny Duquette in an attempt to save his life, which ultimately led to another patient’s heart being transplanted into Denny. This revelation was too much for Erica to handle and she decided to leave both her relationship and job.
Afterward, Brooke Smith made appearances in shows like Bosch, Bates Motel, Supergirl, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, and The Good Fight, as well as the 2019 movie Bombshell.
In the early part of season six, the intern named Ryan went missing, while Brandon Scott has recently acted in shows such as “Dead to Me,” “13 Reasons Why,” and “This Is Us” on Netflix.
As a lifestyle guide, I’d rephrase it like this: In my past, I battled cancer and found my forever love in the form of Alex Karev. After overcoming the disease, I felt a pull to leave Seattle – it wasn’t home for me anymore. Time moved on, and our paths separated; Alex received divorce papers from me. However, there was more to the story than anyone knew. Unbeknownst to many, I’d secretly started a new life on a Kansas ranch, where I became a surgical oncologist and raised twins – all while keeping my past close to heart.
Katherine Heigl stepped away from her role in 2008 when she chose not to put herself forward for Emmy nominations due to feeling the material wasn’t worthy. The character was written out of the series entirely in 2010. Since then, Heigl has expressed a desire to reprise her character, but Shonda Rhimes, the creator, hasn’t entertained the idea. “I’m finished with that story,” she told TVLine in 2015.
After gaining fame as a rising romantic comedy actress, Heigl went on to appear in several more romcoms. Later, she transitioned back to television with shows like State of Affairs, followed by Doubt. More recently, she has been part of series such as Suits and the 2020 production Firefly Lane.
Despite the frequent turmoil that many Grey’s interns seem prone to, Megan might opt for the scalpel instead. Her romantic entanglement involved a love triangle with Steve and Pierce, as she was dating Pierce but slept with Steve, which led to Pierce wanting to harm Steve. Later, Megan became pregnant by Steve, got married, and hasn’t been seen since season six following Derek Shepherd’s decision to rehire her.
Molly Kidder has taken part in several acting roles since her appearance in ‘Grey’s’, such as a guest performance on ‘Outsourced’ in 2010 and various independent movies.
Joseph Williamson, formerly a part of the love triangle involving Megan, Pierce, and Steve, was eventually let go during a round of layoffs in season six. Since then, he has made appearances on shows such as “Here and Now” and the 2019 film “Ford v Ferrari,” alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
Steve found himself at the opposite end of a workplace romance triangle, ultimately tying the knot with Megan and becoming a parent. Despite surviving the company downsizing, he didn’t reappear past season seven.
After his enigmatic disappearance from Grey’s, Mark Saul has made appearances on various other TV shows such as Franklin & Bash, Mom, The Great Indoors, Grace & Frankie, and Modern Family.
In the sixth season, nurse Olivia was let go due to the merger with Mercy West, but she made a brief appearance in the fourteenth season when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while she was in Seattle visiting her parents. Notably, her son received treatment from Alex, who had previously given her syphilis, and she found herself with ample opportunity to converse with Jo, who was then engaged to Alex at the time.
Since parting ways with Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has graced our TV screens occasionally, with notable appearances on shows like Reception and Mysteries of Laura.
Graciella, the intern who was last spotted during the hospital shooting in season six, has since been extremely busy. She’s been featured in a storyline on ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, and has made appearances on shows such as ‘S.W.A.T.’, ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘American Housewife’, ‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Snowfall’, ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘NCIS: LA’, ‘Anger Management’, ‘Bones’, and the 2019 miniseries ‘Reckoning’.
In the chilling events that unfolded in season six, I found myself unwittingly becoming the first victim of Gary Clark’s lethal intentions. He had entered the hospital armed with a gun, his sights set on Derek. Tragically, I was the one who paid the ultimate price after being fatally shot in the head.
Nora Zehetner made guest appearances on a few episodes of ‘Mad Men’, following her departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. More recently, she has been featured in ‘Designated Survivor’ and the 2019 series ‘The Right Stuff’.
During the filming of season six, Percy unfortunately met his end. Unlike other deaths, this one was prolonged because he became trapped in a room with Mandy Moore’s character and Bailey, and was shot at point-blank range. Despite Bailey’s valiant efforts to save him, the elevators malfunctioned during the evacuation, ultimately leading to Percy’s demise.
Robert Baker has been thriving quite well in his career lately, with notable appearances on shows like Riverdale, Modern Family, The Originals, and more recently as Otis Graves in Supergirl.
Dr. Lucy, in a somewhat sneaky manner, seized an exceptional opportunity in Africa that was intended for Alex, mainly due to the lack of communication between them regarding Alex’s potential relocation to Africa. Consequently, Lucy took the position herself, and since season seven, no further information about her has been disclosed.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I find myself frequently recognized for my role as the trusted friend Trish to Jessica Jones in the hit Netflix series, not only in Jessica Jones but also in The Defenders.
Initially portrayed as Derek’s bitter ex-wife, Addison eventually won over fans with her own spinoff series. Most recently, she was a regular cast member on Grey’s Anatomy during the somewhat contentious musical episode in season seven. This is where she assisted in saving Callie after her car accident. Previously, she appeared in a 2012 episode where Meredith imagined her mother was still alive and happily married to Richard, while Derek and Addison were still unhappily married. She made another appearance in a 2023 arc.
She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.
She went on to appear in Fargo, have her own short-lived show Bad Judge, star as a grieving mother in 13 Reasons Why, and help bring about the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy. She also stars on the 2020 show Emily in Paris.
Experiencing Lexie’s demise, my beloved half-sister of Meredith, was another heart-wrenching moment, as she met her end in one of the most poignant storylines the series has ever produced – the catastrophic plane crash. Unfortunately, she didn’t make it back to the hospital (initially known as Seattle Grace) alive, having been trapped and crushed by debris while Mark Sloan, the love of her life, mourned over her loss. Later on, during Meredith’s coma due to COVID-19, Lexie and Mark appeared, implying that they had found each other again in some realm beyond our understanding.
Before playing the tough character Alex Danvers on Supergirl, Chyler Leigh was a part of the show titled Taxi Brooklyn, which carried a humorously unique name.
In the eighth season, Mark, or McSteamy as he was known, didn’t die instantly in the plane crash but managed to make it back to the hospital. However, his injuries were too grave and he lived only for a few days. The hospital now bears their names, Lexie’s and Mark’s, as a tribute, following the survivors’ decision to purchase it with the funds from their lawsuit. A significant detail is that Mark and Lexie visited Meredith in her coma, suggesting they found solace together after death, possibly reuniting.
Eric Dane departed from his previous show to headline TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which concluded after a run of five seasons in November 2018. Now, he is featured on the HBO series “Euphoria,” alongside Zendaya and Storm Reid.
Do you recall the OGYN resident who used to date Jo during season nine? Their relationship took a turn for the worse when he discovered she’d kept secrets from him, resulting in a heated argument that escalated physically. This altercation ended up with Jason suffering an injury after falling and hitting his head. Despite Alex’s efforts to dissuade him, Jason chose not to file charges against Jo, and since then, he hasn’t been seen on the show again.
After initially appearing in “The Originals” on The CW, Charles Michael Davis later joined the cast of “Younger” on TV Land, followed by a role in “For the People” on ABC, and most recently, he can be seen on “Chicago P.D.” on NBC. All in all, his career is thriving.
In season 10, the peculiar intern Heather perished amidst a massive storm. Tragically, she suffered electrocution while attempting to aid Richard Webber.
Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.
Dr. Herman transitioned into an unusually strict guide for fetal surgery in Arizona, but she appeared much fairer once Arizona discovered about Nicole’s large, terminal brain tumor. Amelia managed to remove the tumor, yet Herman eventually lost her sight and departed during season 11. However, she returned in season 14, helping Arizona exit the series by providing a grant for establishing a women’s health center in New York.
Geena Davis starred in the Fox series The Exorcist in 2016, before her final return to Grey’s. In recent years, she has had recurring roles on Netflix’s GLOW and the animated She-Ra reboot series.
After the plane crash, Cristina Yang endured a difficult period that lasted for quite some time before she fully recuperated. Later, she found out she wouldn’t be able to win the Harper Avery award at the hospital where she worked and came to terms with the possibility of having to move on. Her former lover, Preston Burke, then extended an invitation for her to relocate to Zurich to manage the advanced hospital he had established, allowing him to retire with his family. In season 10, Cristina eventually made her departure, following a farewell dance party with Meredith.
Sandra Oh is currently making waves as one of television’s top actresses, playing Eve in the popular BBC America series “Killing Eve,” which earned her a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she also features regularly on Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Additionally, she provides voice acting for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series “Invincible.
Initially an overconfident intern, Shane later became a full-time resident who worked excessively, almost to the point of exhaustion. However, he developed a close relationship with Cristina and requested permission to accompany her to Zurich, which he ultimately did.
Gaius Charles, famously known for his role as Smash Williams in Friday Night Lights, has also acted in Aquarius and Taken. He was recently seen on CBS’ series God Friended Me.
For a few challenging seasons, Derek Shepherd took up work under President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., inviting Meredith and their family to join him. However, she declined, leading them to live apart for some time. Eventually, he decided to rectify the situation by returning home to perform his duties remotely.
In the 11th season, just like how things were going well between him and Mer once more, he was heading out to address some outstanding matters when he stumbled upon a devastating multi-car collision. He spent numerous hours attending to the injured victims, but as soon as he climbed into his own vehicle, a truck struck him. The hospital’s emergency team, unfortunately, were not equipped to handle trauma and neglected performing a head CT scan on him, which ultimately led to his demise.
Patrick Dempsey, formerly known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy, decided to step away from the show as he found it challenging to maintain captivating storylines and yearned for more time with his loved ones. After leaving Grey’s, he has taken on various roles such as in Bridget Jones’ Baby, a miniseries titled The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the series Devils, and advertisements reminding us of his past TV doctor persona. Reports also suggest that he may reprise his role in an upcoming Enchanted sequel.
He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.
Leah Murphy, the unfortunate resident, endured numerous trials before her dismissal during season 10, as it turned out she lacked the necessary skills for surgery. To everyone’s surprise, she reappeared in season 13 to collaborate with Maggie. However, a few episodes down the line, just as unexpectedly, she vanished again.
Tessa Ferrer also appeared in the Hulu version of the World War II miniseries ‘Catch-22’, which co-starred George Clooney.
Callie departed from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital because her girlfriend Penny received an esteemed scholarship in New York. Despite a heartbreaking custody case with Arizona, she intended to remain in Seattle. However, things changed when Arizona reconsidered and helped her move to New York at the end of season 12, taking their daughter Sofia along.
Sara Ramirez departed to star in a new role on CBS’ show, “Madame Secretary.” Previously, she portrayed the contentious character Che Diaz on HBO’s spin-off of “Sex and the City,” titled “And Just Like That.
Penelope’s experience at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was challenging right from the beginning. As Callie’s new partner, she carried the stigma of being one of the doctors blamed for Derek’s death, and had to cope with working under Meredith’s grumpy disposition. Things escalated when she landed a high-profile job in New York, leading to a bitter custody battle between Callie and Arizona when Callie chose to follow her there. It was later revealed that Penelope and Callie had split up, which explained why Arizona eventually moved to New York. Unfortunately, their relationship never seemed destined for success.
Samantha Sloyan became a leading actress in the series ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, portraying the character Leigh. She also made appearances on shows like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘The Rookie’.
In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement for teaching the residents. However, her rigid adherence to rules and protocol led everyone, including Meredith, to dislike her intensely, culminating in Meredith’s suspension. This disdain resulted in Minnick’s termination when she failed to inform the authorities that a resident was missing during a fire, which nearly cost Stephanie’s life.
Later on, Marika Dominczyk became part of the cast of ABC’s brief series titled “Whiskey Cavalier,” which starred her spouse, Scott Foley, who is also known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy.
At the conclusion of season 13, Stephanie chose to venture out and experience fresh adventures, as she was emotionally drained from nearly perishing in a fire and mourning the loss of her boyfriend Kyle (played by Wilmer Valderrama), over several months.
In 2018, Jerrika Hinton made an appearance on the brief-running HBO series titled “Here and Now,” and subsequently became part of the cast for the Amazon show “Hunters,” taking on the role of a character who hunts Nazis.
In the early stages of season 14, Nathan decided to depart from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. His heart’s deepest desire was fulfilled when his fiancée, Megan Hunt, who had been held captive for a decade, returned. The two of them, along with the child Megan had adopted during her time abroad, relocated to Los Angeles. This development marked the end of Nathan’s budding relationship with Meredith, but it provided a truly joyful conclusion for Riggs.
Martin Henderson, interestingly known for his role in Britney Spears’ “Toxic” music video, later became a part of the series titled “Virgin River.
