As I delve into the lives of these former Grey’s Anatomy stars, it’s quite evident that their journey post-Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is as intriguing as their time within its cold, steel walls. Each actor has managed to carve out a niche for themselves in the vast world of entertainment, showcasing their versatility and talent in various roles.
Camilla Luddington and Jessica Capshaw were ready for Sophia Bush to scrub in.
Following Sophia’s debut as Dr. Cass Beckham on “Grey’s Anatomy” in the November 8th episode, two longtime cast members who consider themselves friends, expressed their reactions to Sophia causing a stir in the show.
As a lifestyle expert, I couldn’t help but express my sheer enthusiasm for Sophia! In an exclusive chat with TopMob News, I shared my sentiments, “I am absolutely thrilled for her!” I truly admire when a character enters the scene and stirs things up just a bit, making the narrative more intriguing.
Sophia’s character has sparked significant drama in the lives of Teddy, portrayed by Kim Raver, and her on-screen husband Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, due to their unexpected kiss during a challenging period in their relationship.
Camilla is quite optimistic about Sophia’s storyline. Specifically, she’d love to witness a dynamic between Cass, Teddy, and Owen in the narrative.
The 40-year-old expressed his wish for her to stay and cause quite a commotion, and he specifically wants her to interact extensively with Kim, in full view of Owen.
In response to being asked about returning to the show, Jessica (who temporarily resumed her character Arizona Robbins following her exit in 2017) added, “I’d be there for that.
But even if Sophia’s doesn’t stick around the OR floor for too long, Camilla and Jessica teased she will be making her debut on their podcast, iHeartRadio’s Call It What It Is soon enough.
During this time, Jessica added another essential condition for playing Arizona again: making her appear more youthful.
In her comeback for season 20, Jessica openly confessed that the new group of interns portrayed by actors such as Midori Francis, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., and Niko Terho gave her the impression that she was more senior than Cristina Yang’s mentor in Minnesota.
Jessica remembered them saying, ‘You’re so emblematic.’ As each compliment came, it became more apparent to her that she was indeed older than they were,” (paraphrased version)
According to the 48-year-old, the producers of “Grey’s Anatomy” would have to bring in some mature medical professionals to make my character appear incredibly young.
Still, Jessica admitted there was a brightside to being a veteran on the iconic medical drama.
She expressed her delight upon returning, saying, “It felt fantastic to be back among everyone and in that environment.
Don’t miss the next episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” airing November 21 on ABC at 10:00 PM, to find out if Sophia continues to create a stir in her role as Cass.
For now, continue reading to get updated about Arizona and the other departed surgeons at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
In the third season, Burke left Cristina at the altar without looking back, eventually winning a Harper Avery Award elsewhere. Later, he relocated to Zurich, Switzerland to establish his own high-tech hospital. He married, started a family, and in season 10, as he was retiring, he invited Cristina to take over his hospital.
Isaiah Washington departed the show following allegations that he used a derogatory term towards his costar T.R. Knight during an on-set dispute. His attempts to defend himself only worsened the situation, eventually leading to his dismissal from the series. Interestingly, he reconciled with ABC and was allowed to rejoin the cast in 2014. Since then, his most notable roles have included Thelonious Jaha on The CW’s “The 100”, a character that met his end in season five, and later, a part in Starz’ praised series “P-Valley”.
In the fourth season, Intern Norman made his appearance, often finding himself defending against misconceptions about his role as an intern instead of an attendant due to his youth. A blunder led him to inform a patient incorrectly that she was near death, and later, he suffered a stroke. Following his surgical procedure to extract the blood clot, Norman decided post-surgery that he would switch departments to work in psychology.
Edward Herrmann, a well-known actor who has left a lasting impression, is most recognized for portraying Richard Gilmore on the show “Gilmore Girls.” Prior to his passing in 2014, he made appearances in numerous episodes of “The Good Wife,” “Harry’s Law,” and even “American Dad.
In a different wording: During Bailey’s maternity leave, Sydney, known for her bubbly personality, stepped in as the replacement resident and caused quite a stir with her cheerfulness. At one point, she went on a date with Derek, but then vanished around season 4’s start. However, the trailer for season 21 has now unveiled that Dr. Heron will be making a comeback.
Recently, Kali Rocha has been seen in the roles for shows such as “Liv and Maddie”, “Man with a Plan”, and will appear in an upcoming episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” set to air in 2024.
Among the most heart-wrenching stories on this list, at the end of season five, George made a fateful decision to join the army as a trauma surgeon and was headed there when he bravely shielded a woman from being hit by a bus, but ended up getting struck himself. Upon reaching the hospital in critical condition, he was so unrecognizable that nobody identified him until he managed to scribble his nickname, “007,” on Meredith’s hand using his finger. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were unable to save him, and George passed away tragically.
Following a series of challenging periods off-screen (which included an alleged use of offensive language by Isaiah Washington), Knight faced difficulties with certain storylines involving character George and the fact that George had minimal screen time at the start of season five. As a result, he requested to terminate his contract.
Knight returned to Shondaland in 2017 for an arc on The Catch, and has also appeared on The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius, among other series. In 2019, he appeared on The Bravest Knight and in 2020, he appeared in HBO Max series The Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuoco. He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.
In the early fifth season, Erica Hahn ended both her relationship with Callie Torres and her job at the hospital after learning that Callie had failed to disclose the incident where Izzie Stevens tampered with Denny Duquette’s LVAD wire, which ultimately led to a heart transplant given to Denny that belonged to one of Erica’s patients. This act of dishonesty proved too much for Erica to overlook.
Brooke Smith made appearances in various shows such as Bosch, Bates Motel, Supergirl, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, and The Good Fight, as well as the 2019 movie Bombshell.
In the sixth season, the intern named Ryan went missing, while Brandon Scott has more recently been featured in shows such as “Dead to Me” on Netflix, “13 Reasons Why,” and “This Is Us.
Izzy Stevens was diagnosed with cancer, later married Alex Karev, beat the cancer but eventually vanished during season six. She resurfaced for a second time, expressing her feelings that Seattle wasn’t her permanent residence anymore. Later, it emerged that Alex received divorce papers, and now it’s revealed that Izzy secretly had twins by Alex, lives on a ranch in Kansas, and has become a surgical oncologist.
Katherine Heigl stopped appearing on the show around 2010 after she declined Emmy nomination consideration due to feeling the content wasn’t worthy. Since then, she expressed a desire to reprise her character but the creator, Shonda Rhimes, has moved on from that narrative, stating in 2015, “I’ve had enough of that story.
Later in her career as a rising romantic comedy actress, Heigl appeared in several more romcoms before transitioning back to television with “State of Affairs”, followed by “Doubt”. Most recently, she has been part of the cast for “Suits” and the 2020 series “Firefly Lane”.
As a die-hard “Grey’s Anatomy” fanatic, I must admit, there’s no shortage of turbulent tales among the interns. But when it comes to creating the most riveting soap opera within a soap opera, Megan takes the cake. She found herself in a messy love triangle with Steve and Pierce – she was dating Pierce, yet ended up with Steve after a secret rendezvous. The fallout was intense; Pierce wanted nothing more than to exact revenge on Steve. To add another layer to this tangled web, Megan discovered she was pregnant with Steve’s child. Fast forward to season six, and she vanished from the scene after Derek Shepherd rehired her – leaving us fans eagerly waiting for her return!
Molly Kidder has participated in several acting roles after her part in ‘Grey’, such as an appearance on the show ‘Outsourced’ in 2010, as well as a number of indie movies.
In the TV show, Josephn Williamson, who was part of the love triangle involving Megan, Pierce, and Steve, got let go during a series of layoffs in season six. Since then, he has been seen on programs like “Here and Now” and the 2019 movie “Ford v Ferrari,” sharing screen time with Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
In a workplace love triangle, Steve was the man on the opposite side, who ultimately wed Megan and became her child’s father. Despite being let go during downsizing, Steve managed to last until season eight; however, his character disappeared thereafter and hasn’t appeared since.
Since my enigmatic absence from Grey’s, I’ve had the pleasure of gracing other TV screens with my presence. Shows like Franklin & Bash, Mom, The Great Indoors, Grace & Frankie, and Modern Family have welcomed me into their casts.
In the sixth season, Nurse Olivia was let go following the merger with Mercy West. However, in season 14, she made a brief appearance when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while she was at her parents’ home in Seattle. Notably, Alex, who had previously given her syphilis, treated her son during this visit. Additionally, Olivia had ample opportunity to converse with Jo, Alex’s then-fiancée.
Since parting ways with Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has made guest appearances on various television programs such as Reception and Mysteries of Laura.
Graciella, our intern, was last spotted during the hospital shooting at the end of season six. However, Gloria Garayua has been putting in a tremendous amount of effort, not just resting on her laurels. She’s been seen in a storyline on How to Get Away with Murder, and she’s made appearances on S.W.A.T., The Good Doctor, American Housewife, Animal Kingdom, Snowfall, Criminal Minds, NCIS: LA, Anger Management, Bones, and the 2019 miniseries Reckoning.
In season six, it was Nora who tragically became the initial victim when Gary Clark, armed with a deadly weapon, entered the hospital with the intention of murdering Derek. Regrettably, she lost her life instantaneously following a gunshot wound to the head.
Nora Zehetner made guest appearances in several episodes of Mad Men following her departure from Grey’s Anatomy. More recently, she has taken leading roles on Designated Survivor and the 2019 show The Right Stuff.
During the filming of season six, Percy unfortunately met his end. Unlike other deaths, his was prolonged as he became trapped in a room with Mandy Moore’s character and Bailey. He was shot point-blank. Bailey made every effort to save him, but when the elevators failed during the evacuation, Percy’s fate was sealed.
Robert Baker has been thriving quite well in his acting career, with notable appearances on shows such as Riverdale, Modern Family, The Originals, and more recently, he played the role of Otis Graves in Supergirl.
OBGYN Lucy apparently took a remarkable job in Africa, leaving it seemingly unnoticed by Alex, as he hadn’t discussed his potential relocation with her. Consequently, Lucy went to Africa herself, and since the seventh season, there has been no further news about her.
Currently, Rachael Taylor is widely recognized for portraying the role of Jessica Jones’ friend, Trish, in the Netflix series “Jessica Jones” and also in “The Defenders.
Initially portrayed as Derek’s disgruntled ex-wife, Addison subsequently garnered widespread admiration, even earning her own spinoff series. Most recently, she was a recurring character on Grey’s Anatomy during the season seven musical episode, which stirred some debate. In this episode, she played a pivotal role in saving Callie after her car accident. She also made appearances in episodes such as the one where Meredith fantasized about her mother being alive and married to Richard, while Derek and Addison were still embroiled in marital strife. Addison reprised her role for an extended storyline in 2023.
She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.
She went on to appear in Fargo, have her own short-lived show Bad Judge, star as a grieving mother in 13 Reasons Why, and help bring about the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy. She also stars on the 2020 show Emily in Paris.
The death of Lexie, Meredith’s perky half-sister, was another major tearjerker, as she perished in one of the most devastating storylines the show has ever had: the plane crash. She never even made it back to the hospital (then called Seattle Grace) alive after being crushed by part of the plane while the love of her life, Mark Sloan, cried over her. She and Mark returned to reunite with Meredith during her COVID-19 coma and hinted that the couple found each other again in the afterlife.
Chyler Leigh made an appearance on the amusingly titled show “Taxi Brooklyn” prior to assuming the tough-as-nails character, Alex Danvers, in “Supergirl”.
In the eighth season, Mark, who was often called McSteamy, didn’t die instantly in the plane crash. Instead, he managed to make it back to the hospital but unfortunately, his injuries were too grave. The hospital now bears a tribute to him and Lexie, as the survivors of the plane crash incident pooled their lawsuit winnings together to purchase it and rename it in their honor. It was later revealed that Mark visited Meredith, who was in a coma at the time, alongside Lexie, suggesting that the couple found solace with each other even beyond death.
Eric Dane departed from his show to take on a leading role in TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which concluded after five seasons in November 2018. Now, he features in the HBO series “Euphoria” alongside Zendaya and Storm Reid.
In the ninth season, there was a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology whom Jo had dated. They had a confrontation when he discovered secrets she had kept from him, which escalated into a physical altercation. Jason ended up in the hospital after falling and hitting his head following the fight. Alex dissuaded him from filing charges against Jo, and since then, he has not been seen again.
Charles Michael Davis has been making a name for himself in various television shows. First, he appeared in “The Originals” on The CW. Then, he moved to “Younger” on TV Land. Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.
Dr. Herman took on a very strict role as a mentor in fetal surgery for Dr. Herman in Arizona, but appeared much more understanding once it was discovered that Nicole had a large, terminal brain tumor. Amelia managed to remove the tumor, but eventually Dr. Herman lost her sight and departed during season 11. However, she returned towards the end of season 14 to assist Dr. Arizona in leaving the show by providing grant money to establish a women’s health center in New York.
Geena Davis starred in the Fox series The Exorcist in 2016, before her final return to Grey’s. In recent years, she has had recurring roles on Netflix’s GLOW and the animated She-Ra reboot series.
After the plane crash, Cristina Yang endured a very difficult period and took a considerable amount of time to completely heal. Later on, she found out that she couldn’t win the Harper Avery award while working at the hospital, which made her contemplate moving on. In season 10, her past love, Preston Burke, invited her to Zurich to manage the advanced hospital he had established for his retirement with his family. After bidding farewell at a final dance party with Meredith, she decided to depart.
Currently, Sandra Oh is making waves as a prominent television personality, playing Eve in the widely praised BBC America show “Killing Eve,” which earned her a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she can also be seen in a recurring role on Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Additionally, she provides voice acting for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series “Invincible.
Initially an overconfident intern, Shane eventually became a resident and worked excessively to the point of exhaustion. However, he managed to get acquainted with Cristina and requested permission to accompany her to Zurich, which he ultimately did.

During a challenging phase, Derek Shepherd accepted a position working under President Barack Obama in Washington D.C., hoping to persuade Meredith and their family to relocate with him. However, she declined, leading to some time spent apart. Eventually, he chose to rectify the situation by returning home and performing his duties remotely to be closer to his family.
Much like their renewed happiness in season 11, he found himself resolving outstanding matters when unexpectedly, he encountered a catastrophic road accident. Spending countless hours aiding the injured victims, his own misfortune struck as soon as he climbed into his vehicle. Moments later, a truck collided with him, and he was rushed to a hospital where the medical staff were ill-equipped to handle trauma cases. Regrettably, they neglected to perform a head CT scan, ultimately leading to his demise.
Patrick Dempsey explained that he departed from the series due to finding it challenging to maintain captivating storylines, and he desired more moments with his family. As a result of his departure from Grey’s, he has appeared in movies such as Bridget Jones’ Baby, miniseries The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, TV show Devils, commercials referencing his past role as a TV doctor, and there are rumors that he will star in an Enchanted sequel.
He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.
Ah, Leah Murphy. She endured numerous trials before her dismissal during season 10, as it seemed her skills didn’t align with the demands of a surgeon. However, unexpectedly, she resurfaced in season 13 to collaborate with Maggie. A few episodes later, much like she appeared, she disappeared once more.
Tessa Ferrer was also featured in the Hulu version of the World War II miniseries ‘Catch-22’, alongside George Clooney.
Callie decided to part ways with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital when her partner Penny was offered an esteemed scholarship in New York. Initially, she planned to remain in Seattle following a heart-wrenching custody dispute with Arizona, but things changed; Arizona eventually chose to let Callie go along with their daughter Sofia at the conclusion of season 12.
Sara Ramirez departed to star in a new role for CBS’ series, “Madame Secretary”. Following that, she portrayed the controversial character Che Diaz on HBO’s spin-off of “Sex and the City”, titled “And Just Like That”.
Penelope’s tenure at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital began with challenges and ended on a sour note. Upon her arrival as Callie’s new girlfriend, she brought a questionable past, having been one of the physicians blamed for Derek’s death. To make matters worse, she had to endure Meredith’s gruff demeanor during her stay. Subsequently, she accepted a high-profile job in New York, which led to an emotionally taxing custody dispute between Callie and Arizona when the latter decided to accompany Penelope. As of now, it appears that Penelope and Callie have parted ways (explaining Arizona’s relocation to New York), but their relationship was destined for failure from the start.
Samantha Sloyan continued her acting career by taking on the role of Leigh in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. Additionally, she has been featured in series like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘The Rookie’.
In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement in mentoring the residents. However, she was met with widespread disapproval, even resulting in Meredith being suspended. Her excessive adherence to protocol led her to overlook informing the police that a resident was missing during a fire, which nearly cost Stephanie’s life. This negligence ultimately resulted in Minnick’s dismissal from her position.
Later, Marika Dominczyk teamed up with her husband (previously of Grey’s Anatomy, Scott Foley), on the brief-running ABC series titled Whiskey Cavalier.
At the conclusion of season 13, Stephanie chose to venture out and experience novel things, having narrowly escaped a fire and spent several months mourning the loss of her deceased boyfriend Kyle (portrayed by Wilmer Valderrama>) behind her.

As a couple, they relocated to Los Angeles with the child Megan had adopted during her time abroad. This event disrupted Nathan’s growing bond with Meredith, but it provided a delightfully satisfying conclusion for the character known as Riggs.
Martin Henderson, who interestingly enough made an appearance in Britney Spears’ music video for “Toxic,” went on to star in the television series “Virgin River” later on.
