As I delve into the captivating tales of these Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital alumni, I can’t help but marvel at their resilience and adaptability. They’ve graced our screens with their exceptional acting skills, only to bid farewell to the hallowed halls of the hospital that once bound them.
Grey’s Anatomy’s newest season may prove that Meredith is not the sun after all.
According to the exclusive trailer for TopMob News, the upcoming season on ABC, set to air September 26th, promises a significant return of Ellen Pompeo as Meredith. However, it seems that her character’s questionable actions regarding Alzheimer’s research may eventually lead to consequences, potentially causing trouble for her in the storyline.
In the trailer, Meredith appears to have disagreements with Catherine Fox, a character portrayed by Debbie Allen. This is not surprising given that season 20 saw Meredith taking a highly controversial stance regarding her research on the degenerative disease, as she published her findings without Catherine’s approval.
Moreover, as Meredith’s narrative seems quite dramatic—with the final trailer hinting at a lawsuit against her by the Fox Foundation—it’s important to note that she isn’t the sole character facing challenges in the approaching season.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: In the latest sneak peek of Grey’s Anatomy, it appears that I, Camilla Luddington, am still keeping the news about my pregnancy under wraps. Interestingly enough, I haven’t shared this exciting development with Chris Carmack’s character yet. However, I find myself confiding in Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt about this life-changing secret.
Simultaneously, interns Mika (Midori Francis) and Jules (Adelaide Kane), who have recently been promoted, seem to be deepening their budding relationship. Note that Borelli and Francis will not return as regular cast members beyond this season, according to Deadline.
Even though Meredith is facing trouble with Catherine, the trailer also shows her urging the owner of Grey Sloan to reinstate Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), Owen (Kevin McKidd), and Teddy (Kim Raver) after she had assisted in Alzheimer’s research.
Intriguingly, the trailer for season 21 hints at the return of two beloved characters on Grey’s Anatomy. Specifically, Jackson Avery, portrayed by Jesse Williams, is set to rejoin the series following his departure in Season 17. Despite living a blissful life with April and their daughter in Boston, Jackson returns to the hospital for a significant reason: to defend his mother’s reputation by demanding an apology from Meredith.
A less popular return for fans could be Dr. Sydney Heron (played by Kali Rocha), who has been a source of controversy for two main characters in the show, Meredith and Dr. Miranda Bailey (portrayed by Chandra Wilson). To remind you, Sydney temporarily took over from Bailey during her maternity leave in season 2, and she also went on a date with Meredith’s beloved character Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey).
The trailer indicates that Miranda and Meredith continue to harbor professional resentment towards each other, as their characters portray.
As Meredith asks Miranda, “Sydney Heron is back?”
To which Miranda responds, “In all her perky, passive aggressive glory.”
In summary, the teaser suggests that the new season of Grey’s Anatomy could potentially bring back the series to the soap-operatic drama brilliance it had during the 2000s.
Unfortunately, not all doctors will be able to stay. Catch up on the history of Grey Sloan’s surgical team by continuing to read.
In the third season, Burke left Cristina at the altar, disappeared, and eventually won a Harper Avery award at another location. Later on, he shifted to Zurich, Switzerland where he established a state-of-the-art hospital. He got married, had a family, and in season 10, he invited Cristina to his hospital, asking her to assume control as he prepared for retirement.
After it became public that Isaiah Washington allegedly used a derogatory term towards costar T.R. Knight during an on-set dispute, he departed from the series. His attempts to defend himself only worsened the situation until eventually he was dismissed. However, it seems there was reconciliation with ABC, as they allowed him to rejoin the show in 2014. Notably, his major roles post this incident included Thelonious Jaha on The CW’s “The 100”, which ended with his character’s demise in season five. His recent significant role was portraying Uncle Clifford in Starz’ praised series, “P-Valley”.
In the fourth season, young Intern Norman faced assumptions that he was merely an attendant instead of an intern due to his youth. An unfortunate incident occurred when he mistakenly informed a patient she was near death, followed by a distressing event where he himself suffered a stroke. After undergoing surgery to remove the clot, he made the decision post-surgery to switch departments and transfer to psychiatry.
Edward Herrmann, who was quite well-known and legendary, is primarily recognized for his role as Richard Gilmore on the television series Gilmore Girls. He made appearances in various episodes of The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and even the animated series American Dad before his passing in 2014.
During Bailey’s maternity break, Sydney stepped in as the vibrant housemate who left many feeling overwhelmed by her exuberance. At one instance, she also went out on a date with Derek, but later faded away from the scene around the beginning of season four following that encounter.
Recently, Kali Rocha has been featured in television shows such as “Liv and Maddie,” “Man with a Plan,” and will appear in an upcoming episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” set for release in 2024.
In the final season, George had made the heart-wrenching decision to join the army as a trauma surgeon when, on his way, he heroically saved a woman from being hit by a bus, but in doing so, was struck himself. His condition upon arrival at the hospital was so severe that no one recognized him until he managed to write “007” (his nickname) on Meredith’s hand with his finger. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save him, and George tragically passed away.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself grappling with certain plotlines involving George during some turbulent periods off-screen. An incident involving Isaiah Washington using offensive language towards me didn’t make things easier. Furthermore, my frustration mounted when George was barely present in the early episodes of season five. Eventually, I felt compelled to request a release from my contract.
Knight returned to Shondaland in 2017 for an arc on The Catch, and has also appeared on The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius, among other series. In 2019, he appeared on The Bravest Knight and in 2020, he appeared in HBO Max series The Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuoco. He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.
In the fifth season, Erica Hahn and Callie Torres were in a relationship with potential for growth, but it came to an end when Erica discovered that Izzie Stevens had severed Denny Duquette’s LVAD wire to save his life. The heart transplanted into Denny, unfortunately, belonged to one of Erica’s patients. When Callie chose not to disclose the situation, Erica ended both her relationship and her job at that point.
Brooke Smith made appearances in various shows like Bosch, Bates Motel, Supergirl, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, and The Good Fight, as well as the 2019 movie Bombshell.
In the sixth season, our intern went missing, while Brandon Scott has lately been seen in Netflix shows such as “Dead to Me,” “13 Reasons Why,” and “This Is Us.
Izzie Stevens developed cancer, married Alex Karev, beat the illness but eventually vanished during season six. She resurfaced later, confessing that Seattle didn’t feel like home to her anymore. Subsequently, Alex received divorce papers, and it was revealed that Izzie had secretly given birth to his twins in Kansas. Now, she resides on a ranch there and specializes as a surgical oncologist.
Katherine Heigl stopped being part of the series around 2008 when she chose not to be nominated for an Emmy because she felt the content wasn’t worthy. By 2010, her character was no longer present. Since then, she has expressed a desire to reprise her role, but the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, has indicated that she is finished with that narrative. She stated in 2015 to TVLine that “I’m done with that story.
Initially rising to fame in romantic comedies, Heigl later starred in several more of these films. After that, she moved back to television with the shows “State of Affairs” and “Doubt,” followed by appearances on “Suits” and the 2020 series “Firefly Lane.
Despite the frequent turmoil that many Grey’s interns seem prone to, Megan might opt for the scalpel instead. She found herself in a complicated love situation involving both Steve and Pierce. Initially dating Pierce, she later had an affair with Steve, leading to Pierce’s desire to harm Steve. Megan then became pregnant with Steve’s child, eventually married him, and hasn’t been seen since season six, after Derek Shepherd rehired her.
Molly Kidder has taken part in several acting roles since her work on ‘Grey’, such as an appearance on ‘Outsourced’ in the year 2010, as well as various independent movies.
In the series, Josephn Williamson, who was part of the love triangle involving Megan/Pierce/Steve, was eventually let go during a round of layoffs at the end of season six. Since then, he has been seen on shows like “Here and Now” and the 2019 film “Ford v Ferrari”, sharing screen time with Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
In a workplace love triangle involving interns, Steve ultimately wed Megan and became a parent with her. Despite surviving the company-wide layoffs, Steve continued on to season eight, but he mysteriously disappeared from subsequent episodes.
Since his enigmatic absence from Grey’s, Mark Saul has made appearances on various other television shows such as Franklin & Bash, Mom, The Great Indoors, Grace & Frankie, and Modern Family.
In season six, Nurse Olivia lost her job due to the merger with Mercy West. However, she reappeared in season 14 for a brief spell when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while she was in Seattle visiting her parents. Coincidentally, her son needed medical attention from Alex, who had previously given Olivia syphilis. During this time, she also had an opportunity to converse with Jo, Alex’s then-fiancée.
Since her departure from Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has made some television appearances. Notably, she was seen on shows like Reception and Mysteries of Laura.
Graciella, our intern, was last spotted during the hospital shooting in season six finale. However, actress Gloria Garayua has been consistently busy with work, featuring in a storyline on “How to Get Away with Murder,” and making appearances on shows such as “S.W.A.T,” “The Good Doctor,” “American Housewife,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Snowfall,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS: LA,” “Anger Management,” “Bones,” and the 2019 miniseries “Reckoning.
In season six, Nora became the tragic victim when Gary Clark, wielding a deadly weapon, went to the hospital with the intention of killing Derek. Regrettably, she lost her life instantly following a gunshot wound to the head.
Nora Zehetner made guest appearances in several episodes of ‘Mad Men’ following her departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. More recently, she has been featured on ‘Designated Survivor’ and the 2019 series ‘The Right Stuff’.
During the filming of season six, Percy unfortunately met his end. Unlike other deaths, this one was prolonged as Percy found himself confined with a patient (Mandy Moore) and Bailey in a room. He was shot at point-blank range. Despite Bailey’s valiant efforts to save him, the elevators malfunctioned during the evacuation, sealing Percy’s fate.
Robert Baker has been thriving quite well in his career, with notable appearances on shows such as Riverdale, Modern Family, The Originals, and more recently, playing the character Otis Graves on Supergirl.
OBGYN Lucy seemingly took a remarkable job in Africa that was intended for Alex, as Alex hadn’t discussed his potential move to Africa with her. Consequently, Lucy relocated to Africa, and since the end of season seven, she has not been heard from or seen again.
Currently, Rachael Taylor is primarily recognized for her role as Jessica Jones’ friend, Trish, in the Netflix series “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders.
Initially portrayed as Derek’s bitterly estranged spouse, Addison later won over fans with her own spinoff and became a regular on Grey’s Anatomy. She was last seen during the somewhat controversial musical episode of season seven, where she played a crucial role in saving Callie after her car accident. Additionally, she appeared in the 2012 episode when Meredith imagined her mother was alive and married to Richard, while Derek and Addison were still unhappily married. She made another appearance for an arc in 2023.
She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.
She went on to appear in Fargo, have her own short-lived show Bad Judge, star as a grieving mother in 13 Reasons Why, and help bring about the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy. She also stars on the 2020 show Emily in Paris.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Lexie, Meredith’s vivacious half-sister, met an untimely end in one of the show’s most tragic storylines – the plane crash. Sadly, she didn’t survive the ordeal and was unable to return to Seattle Grace Hospital alive. During the crash, part of the plane fell on her while her beloved, Mark Sloan, mourned for her. Later, during Meredith’s COVID-19 coma, Lexie and Mark reappeared, suggesting that they had found each other again in some afterlife scenario.
Actress Chyler Leigh previously appeared in the wittily titled show, “Taxi Brooklyn,” later transitioning into portraying the tough character Alex Danvers on “Supergirl.
In season eight, Mark, who was known as McSteamy, didn’t die instantly in the plane crash. Instead, he managed to make it back to the hospital but his injuries were too severe and he lived only for a few days. The hospital where this tragedy occurred has since been renamed in memory of both him and Lexie, following the decision made by the other survivors of the plane crash who had received compensation from their lawsuit. This act suggests that Mark revisited the hospital with Lexie to see Meredith while she was in a coma, implying that the couple may have found unity after death.
Eric Dane departed from his previous show to take the lead role in TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which concluded after five seasons in November 2018. At present, he is featured on HBO’s series “Euphoria” alongside Zendaya and Storm Reid.
In case you recall, there was an OGYN resident named Jo who had a relationship with someone called Jason during season nine. Their relationship ended violently when Jason discovered secrets she kept from him, leading to a physical altercation. This fight resulted in Jason falling and hitting his head, causing him to be hospitalized. Alex persuaded him not to file charges against Jo, and since then, he has not appeared again on the show.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve had the privilege of gracing various television screens. After my spellbinding role in “The Originals” on The CW, I moved on to “Younger” on TV Land, followed by “For the People” on ABC, and most recently, I’ve been a part of “Chicago P.D.” on NBC. Needless to say, things are going quite well for me in this captivating world of acting.
In the tenth season, quirky intern Heather tragically passed away amidst a massive storm. Her unfortunate demise occurred when she tried to assist Richard Webber and ended up being electrocuted.
Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.
Dr. Herman took on an excessively rigorous role as a mentor in fetal surgery for Dr. Shepherd in Arizona, but appeared much more understanding when Dr. Shepherd discovered Nicole had a large, terminal brain tumor. Amelia successfully removed the tumor, yet Dr. Herman lost her sight and departed during season 11. However, she came back in season 14 to aid Dr. Shepherd in leaving the show by providing grant money to establish a center for women’s health in New York.
Geena Davis featured in “The Exorcist” TV show on Fox back in 2016, prior to her reappearance on “Grey’s.” Lately, she has been playing regular characters in the Netflix show “GLOW” and the animated revival of “She-Ra.
After the plane crash, Cristina Yang faced a grueling period of healing that took quite some time. Later, she was denied the Harper Avery award and came to understand that her chances of winning it while working at that hospital were slim. This realization made her consider moving on. Her former lover, Preston Burke, then extended an invitation for her to lead a state-of-the-art hospital he’d established in Zurich, allowing him to retire with his family. In season 10, she ultimately said goodbye after sharing a final dance with Meredith.
Currently, Sandra Oh is shining brightly in the television world. She plays Eve in the highly praised BBC America series “Killing Eve,” which earned her a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she also appears frequently on Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Additionally, she provides voice acting for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series “Invincible.
Initially an overconfident intern, Shane later became a resident, putting in excessive hours that came dangerously close to burnout. However, he developed a rapport with Cristina and requested to accompany her to Zurich, a move he eventually made.
Gaius Charles, famously recognized as Smash Williams from Friday Night Lights, has previously acted in Aquarius and Taken. His latest role can be seen on CBS’ series God Friended Me.
Over a challenging period, Derek Shepherd accepted employment under President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., and endeavored to convince Meredith and his family to relocate with him. However, she declined, leading to a temporary separation. Eventually, he chose to rectify the situation by returning home to perform his job from there instead.
In season 11, much like finding harmony with Mer once more, he found himself traveling to address some outstanding matters when he encountered a devastating multi-car collision. He spent countless hours aiding the injured victims, but just after returning to his vehicle, he was struck by a passing truck. The medical team at the hospital where the ambulance transported him lacked readiness for trauma cases and neglected to perform a head CT scan, ultimately resulting in his demise.
Patrick Dempsey explained that he decided to step away from the show as it became challenging to maintain captivating storylines, and he desired to devote more attention to his loved ones. Subsequently, he requested an early termination of his contract. Post his departure from Grey’s Anatomy, he has appeared in Bridget Jones’ Baby, a miniseries titled The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the series Devils, and commercials that serve as reminders of his past role as a TV doctor. He is also expected to be part of an upcoming Enchanted sequel.
He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.
Leah Murphy, the unfortunate character, experienced numerous challenges prior to her termination during season 10, as it turned out that her skills were not suited for a career in surgery. To everyone’s surprise, she reappeared in season 13 to collaborate with Maggie. However, only a few episodes later, her return was as abrupt as it had been initially.
Tessa Ferrer also appeared in the Hulu version of the World War II miniseries ‘Catch-22’, alongside George Clooney.
Callie departed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after Penny received an esteemed fellowship in New York City. Despite having gone through a heart-wrenching custody battle with Arizona that she had initially planned to stay in Seattle for, Arizona unexpectedly changed her mind and sent Callie off along with their daughter Sofia at the conclusion of season 12.
Sara Ramirez departed to accept a new role in CBS’ show, “Madame Secretary.” Since then, they have portrayed the contentious character Che Diaz on HBO’s reboot of “Sex and the City,” titled “And Just Like That.
Penelope’s tenure at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital wasn’t smooth sailing; it was rocky from the beginning to the end. Upon her arrival as Callie’s new girlfriend, she already had a tarnished reputation due to being one of the doctors blamed for Derek’s death. To make matters worse, she had to work alongside Meredith, who wasn’t particularly friendly. Matters escalated when she secured a high-profile job in New York City, leading Callie to move there as well and igniting a bitter custody dispute between Callie and Arizona. By the last update, Penelope and Callie had split up (which is why Arizona moved to New York), but their relationship was destined for failure from the start.
Samantha Sloyan gained prominence by playing the role of Leigh in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, and has also made appearances on television shows like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘The Rookie’.
In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement for instructing the residents. However, her rigid adherence to rules and lack of consideration towards others, which led to Meredith getting suspended, made everyone dislike her intensely. Her dismissal came when she failed to inform the police about a missing resident during a fire, a negligence that nearly cost Stephanie’s life.
Later on, Marika Dominczyk teamed up with Scott Foley, a former Grey’s Anatomy cast member, in the brief-running ABC series titled Whiskey Cavalier.
As an ardent fan, I found myself compelled to delve into uncharted territories at the culmination of season 13. The harrowing experience of a near-fatal fire and the protracted sorrow over my dearly departed companion Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama) had left me drained, yet I was eager to taste something fresh.
Jerrika Hinton made her appearance in the brief-running HBO show titled “Here and Now” during 2018, and additionally became part of the team on Amazon’s series “Hunters”, portraying a character who tracks Nazis.
In the early stages of season 14, Nathan chose to depart from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as his long-awaited dream became reality: his fiancee, Megan Hunt, was finally rescued after being held captive for ten years. With the child Megan had adopted during her time abroad, they relocated to Los Angeles. This decision marked an end to his deepening connection with Meredith, but it offered a tremendously joyful conclusion to Nathan and Megan’s story, known as Riggs.
Martin Henderson, interestingly known for his role in Britney Spears’ “Toxic” music video, later made an appearance in the show titled “Virgin River”.
