Grotesquerie: Niecy Nash-Betts Teases Ryan Murphy’s “Very Different” New Horror Series

Grotesquerie: Niecy Nash-Betts Teases Ryan Murphy's "Very Different" New Horror Series

As a long-time fan of Ryan Murphy’s work, I must admit that his new series, Grotesquerie, has left me utterly intrigued and excited. Having followed Murphy’s career since the early days of Nip/Tuck, I’ve come to expect the unexpected from him, but Grotesquerie seems to be a whole new level of unpredictability.

As a hardcore gamer, I can’t contain my excitement for Ryan Murphy’s upcoming horror series, Grotesquerie, premiering on FX soon. However, if you’re expecting another round of American Horror Story-like chills, you might want to reconsider your expectations. According to Niecy Nash-Betts, who stars in the series, this new creation is unlike anything we’ve seen from Murphy before – a fresh, unexpected twist that has me on the edge of my seat!

Nash-Betts shared with EW that “I believe this one is unique for you, Ryan. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen him do before. If you are a fan of Ryan Murphy’s work, you’ll adore it. As a Niecy Nash-Betts fan, you’ll appreciate it. And if you’re a Travis Kelce enthusiast, you’ll cherish it.

Nash-Betts shared insights on classifying the show “Grotesquerie”. She explained that it doesn’t quite fit into the horror genre as portrayed in Murphy’s “Scream Queens” or “American Horror Story”, nor does it follow the dramatic narrative of shows like “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”. Instead, she described the series as a blend of both genres.

“I would say this show is going towards a hybrid of dark drama and horror,” Nash-Betts said.

Nash-Betts gave Travis Kelce, the football player who is stepping into acting with an unspecified role in ‘Grotesquerie’, a lot of compliments. Previously, Nash-Betts had shared a video from the set of ‘Grotesquerie’, announcing Kelce’s casting in the series and expressing his excitement to have him as part of the cast.

She remarked, “Travis Kelce is an absolute delight to collaborate with. He’s diligent, always striving to study thoroughly and prepare meticulously. He pays close attention to detail by taking notes, and I must say, he excels at what he does. I truly believe so. In fact, I took it upon myself to guide him a bit. I suggested different approaches, like reading during lunch breaks, among other things. He was open to all these ideas, and his on-camera presence is simply captivating.

In the chilling mystery titled “Grotesquerie,” a series of vicious crimes has left a tight-knit community on edge. Detective Lois Tryon (Nash-Betts) senses an unsettling familiarity in these crimes, as if they’re being orchestrated by someone or something to torment her personally. At home, she wrestles with a strained bond with her daughter, battles her own internal struggles, and copes with a spouse who’s been hospitalized long-term. With no solid leads and unsure of whom to trust, Lois seeks aid from Sister Megan (Michaela Diamond), a nun and journalist for the Catholic Guardian. Despite witnessing mankind’s darkest deeds, Sister Megan remains hopeful about human kindness. Lois, however, believes that evil is spreading unchecked and as they piece together evidence, they find themselves ensnared in a twisted web of secrets, only deepening their confusion and unease.

Besides Nash-Betts, Diamond, and Kelce, the show Grotesquerie also features Lesley Manville, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Raven Goodwin in its cast. This series, consisting of ten episodes, is set to premiere on FX on September 25th.
