Grounded 2 was among the unexpected reveals at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, given that it will be available on PC through Steam Early Access and Xbox Series X/S via Game Preview next month. However, one might wonder why a sequel is being developed rather than continuing to enhance the original game.
In an interview with IGN, executive producer Marcus Morgan revealed that they initiated the development of “Grounded” on the original Xbox One. As we were reaching the limit for adding more content to the game, expanding it would have been a challenge. This potential expansion could have disrupted the immersive experience of being fully engrossed in this continuous environment.
In my enthusiasm, I can’t help but share that we were yearning to spin a fresh yarn for our beloved fans (as the first game had reached its satisfying conclusion). Part of this narrative evolution included the introduction of Buggies – these versatile vehicles would not only aid in traversing the terrain but also play a crucial role in construction and battle scenes. However, we realized that the original layouts of Grounded 1 didn’t quite align with this new gameplay style, posing a challenge for us during development.
To adjust your travel speed, it’s crucial to increase the distance between key locations, manage terrain and interior spaces effectively, and navigate environmental hazards appropriately. Unfortunately, these aspects weren’t fully considered initially, which necessitated a comprehensive overhaul. As a result, we had to create a larger game world to allow these elements to be properly implemented. That’s why the game is expanded in size.
In collaboration with Eidos Montreal, known for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Obsidian isn’t developing the game single-handedly. Instead, they’re working together closely, as Morgan describes it, in a true co-development partnership. The team at Eidos Montreal, who were big fans of the original, have contributed to the concept and villains for the sequel.
On July 29th, Grounded 2 starts its early access phase at the price of $29.99. However, as development continues, expect the cost to rise. The initial zone is almost as expansive as the entire backyard from the first game, and players can anticipate enhanced combat, new menacing insects, and additional content. Obsidian will unveil their development roadmap once early access begins, so keep an eye out for updates.
