It appears that the imminent launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is causing leading live-service games to reschedule their updates, since game developers are gearing up for a potentially chaotic Q4 due to the highly anticipated open-world game.
Two creators behind some of the top 10 ongoing multiplayer games stated that they don’t intend to roll out significant updates concurrently with the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The developers responsible for two highly successful live-service games have disclosed their intention not to introduce major updates during the same timeframe as the release of GTA 6.
Autumn is an ideal time for releasing new video games, traditionally marking the debut of popular franchises like Call of Duty and EA Sports Football Club, as well as numerous top-tier (AAA) titles.
We know that Pokémon Legends: Z-A is targeting this release window in 2025, for example.
Additionally, popular games such as Fortnite and Call of Duty frequently roll out substantial updates for each season.
In December of each year, Epic Games introduces fresh LEGO gameplay options, while typically, November’s end signifies the debut of a brand new season for both Warzone and Call of Duty.
The highly anticipated GTA 6 is set to hit the shelves in fall 2025, as confirmed by the CEO of Take-Two Interactive Software, assuring us that the game is indeed progressing towards its scheduled release date.
If Rockstar Games maintains the announced release date, other developers are strategically planning to debut their games slightly before or following the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
One developer mentioned to The Game Business that we should be ready to re-engage players when the initial enthusiasm wanes.
Since its debut in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 200 million units, making it one of the most financially successful video games ever produced, generating approximately $8.6 billion. Given this impressive track record, it’s not surprising that game developers are being careful with their new releases.
Few developers have solidified their Q4 plans, leaving many video games slated for a vague 2025 launch. One of the few exceptions with a definite release date is Borderlands 4, similar to GTA 6, both falling under the Take-Two Interactive publishing label.
Just as the larger Grand Theft Auto community eagerly anticipates news about the release of GTA 6, it appears that video game executives share this excitement and are also keeping a close watch for any updates.
