Guide: The Last of Us 2: All the Tiny Details You Missed

From my gaming perspective, The Last of Us Part II is nothing short of visually stunning. Even on a standard PlayStation 4, Naughty Dog’s latest action-adventure game leaves me awestruck at every corner. It’s the little things that truly make this game stand out when you take the time to observe them.

Beyond the numerous Easter eggs and references hidden throughout The Last of Us Part II, the level of detail in this game’s world is simply mind-blowing. In our extensive guide for The Last of Us Part II, we’ve highlighted some of the game’s most impressive technical aspects that you shouldn’t miss out on.

Please beware of potential spoilers below.

Bandages become soaked with blood over time

When you apply first aid in The Last of Us Part II using a kit, the character you control will secure their injured arm with a bandage. Upon closer inspection, though, it’s clear that the wound persists beneath this covering, slowly causing the bandages to darken with blood as time passes.

Glass physics

In The Last of Us 2, it’s well-known that you can break glass, but the way the game handles this material is more complex than one might think. For instance, if you hurl a glass bottle at an opponent, the shards will penetrate their flesh. Moreover, broken glass exhibits genuine physical characteristics; take a look at the video below where flying glass shards actually knock over a lamp.

Gore physics

This one might be a bit gruesome, but it’s hard to deny its impact. You’ve got some potent explosives at your disposal, and they sure do pack a punch. When deployed, enemies are obliterated, leaving behind residue with unusual characteristics. For example, in the video linked below, you can witness the flesh of an unlucky gang of adversaries sticking to, and then falling from, the ceiling.

Melee strikes can knock teeth out

In The Last of Us Part II, getting up close and personal with an enemy can be downright brutal, especially when wielding a weapon that’s been given an upgrade. A well-timed melee attack could even knock out an enemy’s teeth – a gory detail you might not catch unless you take a moment to switch on Photo Mode. Yikes!

Abby’s fear of heights is subtly shown during gameplay

In the course of the game, it becomes clear that Abby suffers from a phobia of heights. This fear is expressed through dialogue and in a critical part towards the end of the game. If you control Abby, take her to the edge of a raised platform; you’ll see her fear manifest visually. The perspective changes, the screen edges become hazy, and she starts breathing rapidly.

Environments are full of unique details

The open spaces and structures within the game feature distinct elements, although some items are duplicated occasionally. However, no two rooms are identical, and the level of detail in the environment is remarkable wherever you glance. For instance, take a closer look at this hot tub – it’s filled with tadpoles! As far as we know, this specific instance only occurs once in the game, and it’s easy to miss if you don’t pay attention.

If your backpack gets wet, the items inside it do too

In the past, Naughty Dog has been known for making clothing appear wet in their games. They’re pushing boundaries even further in The Last of Us Part II. When your backpack is fully submerged in water, the contents inside – such as notes, maps, and weapons – will become damp. Interestingly, if you only partially submerge the backpack, the items inside will also be partially wet.

Blood melts snow

In The Last of Us Part II, there are several regions blanketed with snow, and when it comes to these icy landscapes, Naughty Dog seems to have gotten quite creative. Since blood is warm, any spilled blood in these frozen areas will cause the snow it comes into contact with to melt slightly.

Snow falls off trees if you walk into them

As we discuss snow, notice how it accumulates on specific tree branches. Walking under those trees causes the snow to shed naturally. Check out the video linked below to witness this phenomenon for yourself at the specified time.
