Gundam Creator Hints That Future Anime Will Be Influenced By Israel and Ukraine Wars

Throughout human history, war has been a persistent theme. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the Gundam series, which is based on the concept of mankind perpetually engaging in conflict for various reasons, continues to thrive. The latest addition to this anime franchise, titled GQuuuuuuX, offers a fresh perspective by delving into an alternate timeline where the Principality of Zeon emerges victorious in the initial struggle. In a recent conversation, creator Yoshiyuki Tomino shared insights about the show’s future and hinted at how real-world conflicts such as those in Israel and Ukraine might influence the Gundam universe.

In a recent interview on NHK, the Japanese television network, Tomino expressed his desire to develop a future project within the anime genre. He didn’t provide specifics about the project, but mentioned that he intends to explore real-world conflicts as a basis, stating, “The conflict in Ukraine has been ongoing for three years now and the strife in Israel for 30 to 40 years. I believe we don’t fully grasp these situations. The theme could be whether humanity can halt this destructive social behavior.” During the conversation, Tomino also voiced his opinions about some of the current series carrying the Gundam title.

Gundam Creator Critiques Current Anime

Tomino used the occasion to express that although the mechs in “Gundam” may be appealing, they were never the primary aspect he intended to emphasize when the series debuted, as he explained, “When you say ‘I like Gundam,’ the thoughts that follow are undeniably ‘mobile suit battles are exciting.’ That’s not the essence. Not at all. The current Gundam creators I see today do not share my war-time experiences.” Additionally, Yoshiyuki pondered if a new generation could effectively grasp his original perspective, given their distance from actual wars.

The creator of Gundam also explained that the series’ beginning inadvertently evolved into a critique of the military-industrial complex, stating, “The first adversary the Gundam faces are three Zaku mobile suits. For there to be a military industry and a system for mass-production, there must exist a conflict between nations. I found myself unable to avoid depicting such a war.

Although Tomino himself hasn’t announced a new Gundam series, the outlook for the mecha franchise remains optimistic. The final episode of the inaugural season for the recent anime release, Gundam GQuuuuuuX, is approaching, and the penultimate episode has dropped significant hints about what to expect in the finale. However, a second season has not been confirmed as of yet, but many mecha enthusiasts are eagerly hoping for more insights into this universe where Zeon emerged victorious in the initial war, and Char took control of the first Gundam.
