Gundam GQuuuuuuX Hits Another Major Milestone As Theatrical Run Nears Its End

In the coming month, the Gundam universe will broaden with an anime series that’s quite challenging to pronounce. This production is the brainchild of Hideaki Anno, the genius behind Neon Genesis Evangelion. The television series promises to unveil a thrilling new phase in the Bandai Namco franchise. Anime enthusiasts who braved the cinemas to catch a glimpse of this mech series’ latest chapter have propelled the compilation movie to unprecedented heights. As the cinematic run nears its end, GQuuuuuuX has managed to achieve one more noteworthy feat, which bodes well for those anticipating it as the next big thing in the anime world.

It’s no surprise that “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” didn’t rank among the top ten box office earners in Japan for its tenth weekend, given that its television premiere is imminent. At the moment of writing this piece, the film has sold over 2 million tickets in Japan, generating nearly $22 million USD. Although it only grossed slightly over $1 million USD in North America, this demonstrates that even a compilation can draw substantial box office attention. Notably, “GQuuuuuuX” wasn’t the sole anime film to succeed in theaters last weekend.

Japan’s Big Anime Weekend

Although the latest Gundam film didn’t crack the top ten during its tenth weekend, anime productions held strong positions at the Japanese box office. In its third week, Doraemon The Movie: Nobita’s Art World Tales reclaimed the number one spot, raking in approximately $2.3 million USD. Following closely behind were films from North America, such as Wicked and Snow White, which were newly released in Japan. Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-, an anime film featuring a rap battle, held its ground in the top ten for its fifth week on the big screen. Though some of these movies may not get a theatrical release in the West like Gundam, we anticipate they’ll find distribution in North America somehow.

GQuuuuuuX’s Big Twist

As someone who’s been eagerly awaiting the latest installment of the Gundam franchise, I must say that the secret plot is something truly intriguing! Unlike previous series that introduced us to entirely new universes, this time around, Anno has crafted a world where the Principality of Zeon emerges victorious from the original conflict that sparked the entire franchise. The story primarily revolves around a fresh set of characters entangled in intense mech battles, but rest assured, familiar faces will make appearances in this alternate reality anime. It’s an exciting twist that has left many fans, including myself, on the edge of our seats!
