Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash Sequel Reveals Long-Awaited Update

2025 looks set to be an exciting year for the Gundam universe, with the introduction of a fresh anime series from Hideaki Anno, creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Titled “Gundam GQuuuuuux”, this upcoming show has already made waves with its theatrical debut in Japan and is generating significant anticipation among fans. Meanwhile, Bandai Namco hints at a return to an iconic story that fans have been eagerly awaiting: Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash. The latest update on the sequel has created quite a buzz.

If you happen to be among those who haven’t yet seen “Hathaway’s Flash,” let me share a bit about it! This movie marks the beginning of a planned trilogy and introduces us to Noa Hathaway, a character destined to carry on the legacies of both Amuro and Char. The narrative unfolds in the very same universe as the original Mobile Suit Gundam storyline, where we see the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon entering a new phase. Released in 2021 and now available for streaming on Netflix, this action-packed tale has been keeping anime enthusiasts captivated for several years, as they’ve followed Noa’s thrilling journey.

Hathaway’s Flash 2 Is Underway

During a recent Shochiku Anniversary Gala, Bandai Namco announced that they are currently working on “Hathaway’s Flash 2,” offering updates about the sequel after a significant period of silence. For those unaware, Shochiku Corporation has had a long-standing partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks in producing and exhibiting their anime films in Japanese theaters. This event is a special milestone for Shochiku as it marks 130 years since the company’s establishment, dating back to 1895.

Although they didn’t specify an exact launch date, Shochiku announced that Hathaway’s Flash 2 is included in their 2025-2026 schedule, suggesting the movie will be out as soon as next year and possibly even this year if we’re lucky. Given that the Gundam series is preparing for its 45th and 50th anniversaries, it’s an exciting time to be a fan of mecha!

The Original Gundam Universe Keeps Coming Back

One reason why the Gundam series has managed to stay relevant since its debut in the 1970s is by developing stories set in different worlds and timelines compared to its initial narrative. Fortunately, the franchise has been open to reinterpreting Amuro and Char’s story in innovative ways. Without revealing too much about spoilers, Gundam enthusiasts may find the way GQuuuuuux constructs its universe intriguing and how it connects with what happened previously. Due to Hideaki Anno’s participation, fans of anime were anticipating some unexpected twists, but many will still be shocked by where the series appears to be heading.
