Gundam Hypes Its Latest Alternate Universe With New Trailer (And Aliens?)

Kadokawa recently unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming manga titled “Mobile Suit Gundam Eight”, which is set in an alternate universe of the Gundam series. The trailer displays several panels from the forthcoming manga, featuring the main character, a girl who’s yet to be named, various mysterious creatures, and the primary Gundam mobile suit. A voiceover accompanies the trailer, outlining the storyline and the protagonist’s driving force. Although it’s merely speculation, the narration suggests that the lead character may have made a promise or vow with the girl in the footage. “Mobile Suit Gundam Eight” is part of Kadokawa’s 20th Anniversary project for “Gundam Ace” magazine and will be published in the magazine on June 26, 2025.

A new high-end model kit, themed on the primary Gundam character, is set to be unveiled. This upcoming series, titled Gundam Eight, will be penned by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Shuei Takagi. Notably, Kamoshida has contributed significantly to various Gundam projects, including the hit titles Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and its manga derivative, Gekko. He is also the author of the popular Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai series. On the other hand, Takagi is renowned for his work on the Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation Code Fairy manga series, which is an adaption from the video game of the same name. The official announcement for Gundam Eight was made in 2021; however, the main Gundam’s image and release date were only revealed on April 24th, 2025 by Kadokawa.

What Is Mobile Suit Gundam Eight About?

In contrast to the majority of mainstream Gundam series, which maintain a grounded and militaristic atmosphere, Mobile Suit Gundam Eight ventures into a more hardcore science fiction scenario. As an observer, I find myself in the year 2030, where this story unfolds around a young man who is the sole pilot of the last known Gundam in existence. The human race has been drastically reduced, with only 258 individuals remaining across the universe. Although the trailer hints at the possibility of extraterrestrial life without explicitly confirming it, it seems that Mobile Suit Gundam Eight’s central conflict revolves around combating non-human entities. This alien encounter represents a significant departure from the traditional themes and narratives found in the mainline Gundam series.

Typically, Gundam stories revolve around conflicts between humans, exploring the sinister aspects of humanity and the rot within every military establishment. The movie Mobile Suit Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer, however, deviates from this norm as its protagonists engage in battles against non-human entities, specifically formless aliens in this instance. There’s a possibility that the monsters shown in the Gundam Eight trailer could be a red herring, and the conflict might actually revolve around human struggles. However, given that only one Gundam is present in the manga, it appears that the story will involve a single individual battling insurmountable odds to protect the remaining fragments of humanity. Unless there’s a faction of humans intent on self-destruction, it seems likely that the manga follows a teenage boy wielding a unique weapon as he combats an alien army or Earthbound monsters alone.

In addition to numerous manga-only spin-offs, the Gundam franchise is particularly recognized for the “Crossbone Gundam” manga. This manga served as a continuation of the story from the “Gundam F91” film. The popularity of “Crossbone Gundam” gave rise to several sequels such as “Skull Heart”, “The Steel Seven”, “Ghost”, “Dust”, “X-11”, and “Love & Piece”. Similarly, “Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt” is another well-known storyline that initially emerged from a manga series, later transitioning into an anime. However, the production of the “Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt” manga has faced several breaks, temporarily halting progress on the anime version. Nevertheless, the series has now moved into its concluding phase.
