Gundam Seed Freedom’s Prequel Unleashes New Trailer: Watch

As a die-hard cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of mecha anime, I can confidently say that the announcement of Gundam Seed Freedom Zero has sent shockwaves through the community. Twenty years in the making and helmed by original director Mitsuo Fukuda and series writer Chiaki Morosawa, this prequel promises to deliver the characterization we’ve come to expect from this beloved franchise.

The film titled “Mobile Suit Gundam: Seed Freedom” has become the most successful and beloved installment in the mech series franchise. This year, it made its way onto Japanese screens, catching fans of Gundam off guard since the original “Seed” television series concluded back in 2003, with its follow-up wrapping up in 2005. The return to this world filled with mechanized combat, the Gundam franchise swiftly announced that a prequel titled “Gundam Seed Freedom Zero” was underway. As fans eagerly anticipate further details about this upcoming prequel, Bandai Namco Filmworks has unveiled a fresh trailer to tease what’s to come.

The real power of the Gundam series lies in its ability to transport its mech suits into diverse timelines and dimensions, thereby enabling it to spin fresh tales for many years. This flexibility allows it to explore established universes, as well as create new characters and landscapes. For instance, the Gundam Seed saga was initiated in 2002, yet it took several decades before the story of Blue Cosmos resumed. When Mobile Suit Gundam: Seed Freedom graced the big screen globally, it turned out to be the highest-grossing film in the franchise, which is why it’s logical that this universe would carry on.

Seed Freedom Zero Trailer

It’s surprising to know that the script for the Gundam Seed Freedom prequel was penned down twenty years ago, coinciding with the original anime’s debut on television screens. Notably, Mitsuo Fukuda, a familiar face from the anime, is coming back to direct this time. Additionally, Chiaki Morosawa, who has worked on the series before, will be part of the team, ensuring that Gundam Seed Freedom Zero will closely follow the characterization established in this Gundam series up until now.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch Mobile Suit Gundam: Seed Freedom yet, here’s a simple summary of the popular anime movie: In C.E.75, conflicts and independence movements persist, along with aggression from Blue Cosmos. To bring peace, a global monitoring agency called COMPASS is formed, with Lacus as its initial president. Members like Kira and his team intervene in numerous regional battles. Later, a new nation called Foundation suggests a joint operation against a stronghold of Blue Cosmos.

Previously teased, the special version of “#SEEDFREEDOM” will be screened for the second time. The “special preview footage” has been released online for the first time. Stay tuned for more updates.

The Future is Bright For Mechs

Although the “Gundam Seed” universe is currently the most prominent mech universe, it doesn’t limit the anime franchise to solely focusing on this world. For instance, “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance” revisited the original universe, casting the first Gundam protagonist Amuro in a somewhat villainous role. This latest series, distinguished by CG-animation, is presented on Netflix, offering a unique take on the franchise’s storyline. Interestingly, Netflix is also developing a significant Gundam project.

The much-discussed live-action Mobile Suit Gundam film is still in development, but there have been some recent alterations. Initially, Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was set to direct, but the role has since been transferred to another director. Last month, Jim Mickle was announced as the new director, known for his work with Netflix on the live-action series Sweet Tooth. Although the release date has not been disclosed yet, it’s expected to be a significant event when it finally premieres on Netflix.
