In my view, attending “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-” was an unforgettable cinema experience on January 17th, 2025. This latest addition to the Gundam universe made a powerful debut in Japanese cinemas, claiming the top spot and holding strong in the box office rankings for a month after release. The new Gundam movie stood tall at number seven in its fifth weekend, raking in approximately $16.5 million at the box office.
Remarkably, this recent box office performance has surpassed the 1982’s “Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space,” a film from the original compilation trilogy that held the title as the highest-grossing Gundam movie for decades with an earnings of $14.88 million.
Despite making a significant impact at the box office, the initial release of “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Begining-” has yet to surpass the earnings of “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom,” which set a record as the highest-grossing Gundam film in 2024 with a total gross of $35.5 million. As of now, it looks like “Beginning” may not match the success of “Seed Freedom,” but there are still several weeks left in its theatrical run and future screenings planned internationally, including North America. In an attempt to generate interest for a new series, Bandai Namco Filmworks have started incorporating “special footage” into “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.
Why Gundam GQuuuuuuX Can’t Match Seed Freedom
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Origin-” has been a massive success for the “Gundam” franchise and Bandai Namco, holding the top spot at the Japanese box office for several weeks now. Fans are eagerly anticipating this new series as it is being jointly produced by Studio Khara, who are also behind the iconic “Neon Genesis Evangelion”. The show also shares links with the original “Mobile Suit Gundam”, increasing excitement for the series even further compared to previous “Gundam” animations. However, it’s unlikely that “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Origin-” will surpass the box office earnings of “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom” due to the immense popularity of “Gundam Seed” in Japan.
Despite being met with lukewarm responses from Western fans, the Gundam Seed series has consistently been one of Japan’s most beloved Gundam shows. On Japanese television, it garnered impressive ratings and boasted strong DVD and music sales, eventually leading to a direct sequel titled Seed Destiny. The ongoing popularity of the original series is believed to have contributed significantly to the massive success of Seed Freedom.
While I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, it doesn’t carry the same iconic status as the Seed series in many circles. However, with an enthusiastic and open-minded American audience ready to embrace it, along with its global launch, this newcomer could certainly challenge the reign of Seed!
