Guy Ritchie Set to Direct Sequel to Controversial Reboot

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is teaming up once more with actor Jake Gyllenhaal for “Road House 2,” which will stream on Amazon’s Prime Video. The original “Road House” remake, a 2021 release that mirrored the 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze, was a smash hit on Amazon’s streaming platform. However, its initial director, Doug Liman, expressed displeasure with Amazon for releasing it on Prime Video rather than in theaters as originally planned. Now, Guy Ritchie steps in, having previously collaborated with Gyllenhaal on “In the Grey” and “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” both of which are also under Amazon MGM Studios. It was reported in April that Guy Ritchie was being considered for the director role of “Road House 2.”

In the movie titled Road House, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, a former UFC fighter now working as a bouncer. He’s hired by bar owner Frankie (played by Jessica Williams), who runs an establishment in the Florida Keys and is struggling with a gang trying to ruin her business. The arrival of Dalton puts him at odds with the powerful mob boss Brandt (portrayed by Billy Magnussen). However, things take a turn when a professional assassin named Knox (Conor McGregor) makes his appearance on the scene. This marks McGregor’s debut in acting following his UFC career.

Last summer during their presentation, Amazon revealed plans for a new installment of the movie “Road House”. At that time, it was uncertain whether director Liman would be involved. Now, Amazon MGM Studios has announced that the original film drew in 80 million viewers globally within its first eight weeks, making it Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched debut production on a global scale to date.

Doug Liman chose to forgo the debut screening of “Road House” as a show of dissent against the switch from cinematic release to streaming. Later, he voiced his worry about not earning additional income due to the film’s success on streaming platforms. When speaking with IndieWire, Liman stated, “Firstly, I have no qualms with streaming. We need streaming movies because writers, directors, and actors need employment opportunities. Not every movie should be in a theater. So, I’m a strong supporter of TV series, streaming films, and theatrical films. We should have it all.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, let me share my gripe about the movie “Road House”. You see, this production was crafted with MGM for a theatrical release, and every single person involved, including myself, Jake Gyllenhaal, and producer Joel Silver, were compensated as if it would be a theater success. However, the game-changer came when Amazon swooped in and streamed the movie instead, leaving us high and dry without any compensation…

Now, I’m not here to discuss the industry implications – 50 million people watched “Road House” – but let me tell you, neither Jake nor I, nor Joel Silver saw a dime from that. That’s just plain wrong.

In addition to his upcoming films, director Guy Ritchie’s streaming projects include “MobLand,” which recently premiered on Paramount+ featuring Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan, as well as “Fountain of Youth” airing on Apple TV+ with John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, and Eiza González. His next cinematic venture is the film “Wife & Dog,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins.

Under the guidance of director Doug Liman, the movie “Road House” features Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Joaquim De Almeida, and Lukas Gage in key roles. In the upcoming sequel, “Road House 2”, Guy Ritchie takes over as director with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role.
