In the most recent edition of “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the storyline about Gwen Stacy has drastically altered our previous understanding of her character. Marvel’s revamped Ultimate Universe excels at providing fresh perspectives on well-known, iconic figures. For instance, Peter Parker is a married man with children who assumes the role of Spider-Man, Harry Osborn becomes a heroic Green Goblin, and Wolverine transforms into a mind-controlled Winter Soldier. As for Gwen Stacy, she’s now married to Harry rather than having a romantic relationship with Peter. While we haven’t seen much of her yet, after Harry’s death at the hands of Kraven the Hunter, “Ultimate Spider-Man” is shining the light on Gwen Stacy, revealing her surprising past and link to a significant villain. [CAUTION: Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #16 ahead.]
Issue #16 of “Ultimate Spider-Man” originates from the creative minds of Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Cory Petit. The story commences on a gloomy, rain-soaked night as Gwen Stacy pays her respects at Harry Osborn’s grave. The narrative then shifts to the past, delving into the conversations between young Gwen and her father following her mother’s demise. Additionally, it explores the evolution of the relationship between Gwen and Harry. A significant twist unfolds as we discover that Gwen’s father was part of a clandestine group known as Mysterio.
Gwen Stacy is the Ultimate Mysterio
In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, I must say that “Spider-Man: Far From Home” takes an unexpected turn when our protagonist Gwen gets word that her late father has been discovered. This leads her to a gathering of four enigmatic figures disguised as the enigmatic Mysterio. It turns out that Gwen’s dad was a member of this covert group, and before his passing, he wished for her to step into his shoes when the time came. Although three of their true identities remain shrouded in mystery, we do have insights about one – Quentin Beck, the original Mysterio from the main Marvel Universe.
After some years, we witness Harry and Gwen’s wedding day. Despite being married, Gwen has managed to keep her secret from Harry – he remains unaware that she is the Green Goblin when not in their shared life. On their first Christmas as a married couple, Harry gives Gwen a book titled “The World That Is and The World That Was” by Dr. Jericho Drumm. Although Harry describes it as a conspiracy theory book, Gwen perceives it as something more profound. She hints at the existence of two realities: the one they’re currently inhabiting, and another one that they should be living in.
Gwen finally reveals her discoveries to the Council of Mysterios, confirming their initial suspicions that The Maker has drastically altered reality. The world they inhabit is not what it seems and is based on a deception so vast that even humanity could be fooled. It seems that there is always a Mysterio keeping an eye on Gwen, as we observe a Mysterio illusion popping up behind her in different scenes.
Marvel reveals the true fate of Harry Osborn, the Green Goblin
If you found those recent disclosures mind-blowing, the 16th issue of Ultimate Spider-Man may have saved its most thrilling for the finale. We delve deeper into Gwen Stacy’s chronology, leading us to a pivotal moment when Peter Parker and Harry Osborn find themselves in a desperate struggle against Kraven the Hunter within the Savage Land. Intriguingly, Mysterio pops up to inform Gwen about Harry’s whereabouts. With her resolve unwavering, Gwen sets a rescue mission into motion. The narrative then reaches a tense climax as Kraven prepares to end Harry’s life, but the scene unexpectedly shifts with Mysterio stepping in. The illusionist master muffles Harry and instructs him to stay silent and observe.
In a trick orchestrated by Mysterio, it appears that Kraven kills “Harry” right in front of Peter. However, it’s later revealed that this was just an illusion. While Harry watches in shock from the sidelines, Mysterio convinces Peter to rush home to save his family. In a surprising twist, Mysterio himself then shoots and kills Kraven, imitating Kraven’s intended murder of “Harry”. Finally, to reveal their true identity, Mysterio takes off their mask, unveiling themselves as none other than Gwen Stacy to a stunned Harry.
In issue #16 of “Ultimate Spider-Man”, Harry and Gwen visit his grave. Since Harry is considered legally deceased, he can no longer be associated with the Green Goblin. As they depart, they decide it’s time to confront Wilson Fisk and his Sinister Six, aiming to emerge victorious in their upcoming battle.
