Gymnast Ana Barbosu Taking Social Media Break Amid Scoring Controversy

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in sports psychology, I deeply empathize with Ana Barbosu‘s decision to step away from social media. The intense scrutiny and high-pressure environment that comes with being an Olympic athlete can be overwhelming, and it takes immense mental strength to navigate these challenges.

Gymnast Ana Barbosu is heading offline.

Following the Romanian gymnast being displaced from the victory podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a score adjustment in Jordan Chiles‘ floor exercise for Team USA, she chose to ignore the commotion and focus on her own performance.

In a post on her Instagram Story dated August 7th, Ana expressed gratitude for all the supportive messages she’s received, and mentioned that she plans to step away from social media for a while. This was accompanied by a beautiful photo of the Olympic rings in Paris at sunset.

She added in Romanian, alongside a smiling emoji, “For those who know me, you have my number.”

In my role as a lifestyle expert, let me share this: For the second time, I find myself expressing my thoughts on social media after a recent setback in competition. On August 5th, I penned down my sentiments of gratitude towards all those who supported me before, during, and following the event. In essence, I’m saying thank you to everyone that encouraged me along this journey.

In that moment, she too shared a Story originally posted by former Romanian gymnast Sandra Izbasa-Bianca, offering encouragement.

In her native language, Sandra penned: “The words our coaches often drilled into us during training sessions resonate more clearly than ever before. ‘As Romanians, you must surpass perfection to avoid misunderstandings!’ This maxim holds true once again. Keep your chins up and backs straight! Never lose faith in your dreams! Onward, Romania!”

On August 5, the individual gymnastics finals concluded dramatically when, just before the end, an investigation into Jordan’s floor score led to a 0.1 point adjustment.

Here, Jordan’s team believed that she performed a tour jeté with a complete turn more impressively than the judges had indicated through their score of 5.8 for difficulty; they expected a higher mark of 5.9.

Although executional scores cannot be contested by coaches, they can challenge the difficulty ratings. In this instance, Jordan’s coaches put forth a query on her behalf, and eventually, the judges concurred with their appeal.

The outcome not only raised Jordan’s score from 13.666 to 13.766, it also shifted the medal standings. Initially, Ana believed she would earn the bronze medal, with Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade taking the top two spots for Team USA and Brazil respectively. However, due to this change, she ended up in fourth place instead.

However, even though the outcome was undeniably disheartening, as Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez explained on NBC’s broadcast, “Inquiries like these occur for a reason. Sometimes, mistakes happen, and they can go back and verify the findings.”

After catching a glimpse of the revised scoreboard, Jordan’s eyes welled up with tears. Later on, he opened up about that poignant experience.

She shared with the cameras after the medal presentation, “I simply aimed to give my all, and I did.” She’s speechless right now, just incredibly proud of her own achievements.
