Hezly Rivera claims that each team member on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team is particularly skilled at generating excitement and hype, according to her perspective.
The 16-year-old athlete, who will represent the United States at the 2024 Olympics in Paris as the youngest team member, shared with TopMob News during an exclusive interview, “They’re incredibly encouraging and motivating. Regardless of the situation, they’ll root for you wholeheartedly.” We’re all members of Team USA, and this camaraderie is truly unique as everyone receives unwavering support.
The Oradell, N.J. native, who isn’t directly experiencing Simone Biles and her teammates’ performance at the Olympics, is confident that they will support each other. (Or: The youngest team member from Oradell, N.J., though not present at the Olympics to witness it firsthand, believes that Simone Biles and her colleagues will stand by one another.)
Rivera commented that Biles, Lee, Chiles, and Carey, all silver medalists in the team event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics (previously held in 2020), have already gone through similar experiences. Consequently, they will serve as exceptional role models and valuable mentors for him.
Despite not having a deep personal history with them, Rivera expressed, “Conversing with them during our challenges,” brought her a strong connection. She believes, “This team’s camaraderie feels akin to family.”
Additionally, Rivera pointed out, “They’re not merely encouraging gymnasts, they are genuinely kind individuals. They constantly support one another, and I believe they will be instrumental in helping me navigate my first Games experience.”
As an obsessed fan, I can tell you that Biles has made it clear that she won’t tolerate any criticism of her 2024 teammates’ talent and dedication while she’s leading the way. With a record-breaking number of medals under her belt, she understands better than most how the pressure to perform can be overwhelming.
But count Rivera among those whose jaw dropped when she found out she had made the team.
She reminisced with joy, “I was overjoyed because all my hard work had finally been rewarded. To find myself in such a fortunate situation, I couldn’t believe it when they called out my name.”
As an obsessed fan, I simply can’t dispute the numbers! Rivera astoundingly finished fifth all-around at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Minneapolis earlier this month. Incredibly, she tied Joscelyn Roberson for first place on the beam – a feat that surpassed Biles and Lee’s performances. I was left speechless when I heard the announcement. “Me?” I asked myself in disbelief. It was an extraordinary moment that added to this unforgettable journey.
At the Paris Olympics in 2024, she will have participated in just her fourth international event since making her world debut at the 2022 DTB Pokal Cup in Germany. This was followed by the 2023 FIG Artistic Junior World Championships in Turkey and the 2024 Jesolo Trophy in Italy.
Preparing for the grandest, most dazzling global platforms, with Olympic gymnastics team’s Luminous Legacy tank leotards adorned with no less than 10,000 Swarovski crystals each, Rivera shared her sentiments. “All I need is self-assurance and faith in my preparation,” she expressed. “Plus, before departing for competitions, I usually take a moment to pray. It helps me stay centered and focused.”
Teenagers have a soft spot for worship music, and among her preferred artists is Katy Nichole. According to her, listening to Katy’s music makes her feel tranquil yet energized at the same time.
She makes an effort to keep a calm and focused mind before the meeting, avoiding unnecessary thoughts that could cause confusion or stress. As she acknowledged, the situation carries significant importance and potential pressure.
Rivera has never visited Paris before, excluding a layover at the airport. Her excitement levels are high as she looks forward to finally laying eyes on the iconic Eiffel Tower.
I’ve had the strong desire to do that for what feels like an eternity, I remarked. (And, by the way, if I manage to earn any medal at all, I’ll be bringing home a piece of the tower as a souvenir, with each Games medal adorned on one side by a hexagonal scrap of iron from that 135-year-old icon.)
After Rivera has adjusted to living in the Olympic Village, a place she found incredibly hard to believe she would get to experience after hearing tales about it for so long, she might want to ask her teammates some questions.
She expressed her intention of seeking their firsthand knowledge, saying, “I plan to ask them about their experience since they have gone through it before. Hearing their accounts will help boost my confidence. I’m simply curious to understand what lies ahead.”
When it comes to her actions at the crucial moment, that’s something only Rivera can answer. She’s meticulously planning standout routines for each of the four events: the floor exercise, the balance beam, the uneven bars, and the vault.
She added, “I’ll find out once we arrive how the training sessions will pan out. I’m preparing as usual for championships and qualifiers, just in case.”
I’m confident in my gymnastics skills and what it takes for me to perform at my best. As long as I focus on doing just that and not worrying about surpassing or falling short of expectations, I trust that I’ll come out on top.
If she seems wiser than her age on Team USA, that’s simply how their youngster behaves – not just walking the wise path, but also twisting, bouncing, and flying through the air.
Rivera emphasized, “Having confidence is crucial. I’m certain I can accomplish it; I only need to have faith in myself.”
