As a fervent fan of gymnastics and a fellow athlete, I am deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Kara Welsh. Her spirit and dedication to her craft were not only evident on the mat but also in every aspect of her life.
The college sports community is grieving the loss of gymnast Kara Welsh.
Following the sad news that a young woman, aged 21, lost her life after being fatally shot in an apartment situated off campus by someone she was acquainted with, members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s sports department expressed their sorrow over her heartbreaking demise.
Coach Jen Regan expressed on September 1st that it was challenging to express the profound influence Kara had on the Warhawk community. She was a strong athlete, an unwavering teammate, and a beacon of light during difficult times for everyone. As a gymnast at the Warhawks, Kara undoubtedly lifted us all up.
I expressed, “A profound emptiness resides within us all, and finding the right words seems impossible. Yet, Kara’s enduring impact on Warhawk gymnastics ensures her legacy will persist eternally.”
Ryan Callahan, who serves as both the Athletic Director and Assistant Chancellor at UW-Whitewater, also took a moment to reflect on the passing of Kara.
“Kara was an amazing young woman,” he told local outlet WKOW Sept. 1, noting the entire community is devastated and in disbelief. “Right away you just knew there were so many people who were impacted by Kara’s personality, leadership and just being a great teammate.”
In a team announcement, Ryan expressed that we’ve been fortunate to spend the last three years with her. She was an unselfish individual who always improved those around her. Our thoughts are with her mother, Nancy, and all her loved ones during this difficult time.
Simultaneously, a handful of Kara’s fellow team members posted messages conveying their sadness. “Completely broken-hearted,” expressed gymnast Carley Scott on her Instagram Story for September 1st.
“I love you forever, Kara.” Kelsey Kolhoff also shared a GoFundMe link to aid Kara’s family, which includes parents Nancy and Tom Welsh as well as sister Kaeli. Kelsey wrote, “Please support my friend and her family.”
On August 31st, Whitewater police confirmed that they responded to a call about a gunshot victim at around midnight, where they sadly discovered Kara dead, suffering from numerous injuries.
In the same apartment was found a 23-year-old man, who was acquainted with the female victim. Upon investigation, it was uncovered that prior to the gunfire incident, there had been a dispute between these two individuals.
Later on, the police announced that an unknown individual had been taken into custody for allegedly committing first-degree intentional murder, threatening public safety with a hazardous weapon, and displaying disruptive behavior while in possession of a weapon. They emphasized that their investigation is still active.
But while law enforcement continues to investigate what lead to Kara’s tragic death, the Whitewater community is coming together to support one another.
“As Ryan mentioned on WKOW, there will soon be a memorial and vigil at the school. It’s comforting during tough times like these to have such a supportive community – from our fellow student athletes on the team, to the wider community itself and other campus areas that are assisting us in coping with our grief.”
