Hades 2 Dionysus: where is the God of Wine?

Hades 2 Dionysus: where is the God of Wine?

As a dedicated fan who has traversed the underworld multiple times in the original Hades, I can’t help but feel elated to see Dionysus return in Hades 2! The God of Wine was always my go-to Olympian for his easygoing personality and potent boons. His absence in the sequel initially caused a pang of worry, but seeing him thrive amidst the chaos on Mount Olympus is truly heartwarming.

In the game “Hades 2“, it’s Dionysus, the deity of wine and festivity, who makes a comeback among the Olympians in an update fittingly called “Olympic Update”. He returns to the scene, offering his intoxicating advantages to aid Melinoë in combat.

In the initial Hades game, I was among the Olympians lending a helping hand to Zagreus. Interestingly, Dionysus was conspicuously missing when the sequel debuted in Early Access. But lo and behold, he’s back alongside Athena in the latest update, bringing aid to Zagreus’ sister, and most excitingly, Mount Olympus as a playable area!

Will Dionysus be in Hades 2?

Fans of the Wine God may have felt concerned that he could be entirely absent from Hades 2, given his charming and amiable nature as portrayed by Dionysus.

To my delight, it appears that Dionysus is not merely holding up, but flourishing amidst the unrelenting siege of Mount Olympus by Chronos’ troops. Surprisingly, within his personal sanctum, Dionysus seems to be hosting a grand and jubilant celebration.

If Melinoë manages to fight her path through Polyphemus and Eris towards Olympus, she might stumble upon Dionysus’ private quarters as an unexpected room. Inside, she will discover Dionysus being cognizant yet unfazed by the assault.

Under the influence and completely intoxicated, Dionysus plans to enjoy the war from his den of pleasure-filled vice. However, when Melinoë encounters him, his drunken state is so severe that he momentarily mistakes her for her brother Zagreus, due to their shared trait of heterochromatic eyes.

Despite Melinoë’s inability to wake Dionysus initially, she later manages to persuade him to offer assistance on future occasions. Consequently, Melinoë can tap into his powers, known as Boons, which amplify and strengthen her own capabilities.

She could additionally offer him Ambrosia as a gesture to strengthen their bond, opening up fresh conversations and fostering intimacy. On the initial occasion of giving it, Dionysus will bestow upon her his cherished Fig Leaf memento.

In simpler terms, this feature offers a 50% possibility that there will be no adversaries in 1 out of every 2, 3, or 4 random encounters (depending on rank). This allows the player to collect the room’s prize without any opposition.

What are the Dionysian Boons?

In the game Hades 2, the blessings bestowed by Dionysus have fewer choices compared to the original game, yet they’re stronger to compensate.

He specializes in explosive damage, healing effects, and the unique Hangover status effect (that works like a damage-over-time poison). These boons are:

  • Tipsy Shot: Hold Cast to lob a large explosion. The binding circle forms at that location
  • Bounce Back: After each encounter, restore some health if you took damage in that encounter
  • Drunken Stupor: Melinoë’s Omega moves inflict Hangover the first time they strike foes
  • Happy Haze: Every 8 seconds in each encounter, Festive Fog appears, empowering Melinoë while she stands inside it
  • Worry Free: Gain more max health, but the amount (and subsequent current health) is a mystery
  • Bottomless Drink: In each encounter, Grape Juice appears every few seconds which empowers Melinoë’s next attack.

In simpler terms, all of Dionysus’ powers are tied to the Water element. He doesn’t have any Infusion or Duo Boons. This means he works exceptionally well with Poseidon and Aphrodite, who both focus on the Water element, and complements their abilities particularly in healing aspects.
