Travis Kelce’s shaggier hairdo is all natural.
Following rumors that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, who is in a relationship with Taylor Swift, grew his long hair through a hair transplant, his long-term barber Vince Garcia maintained that the player didn’t receive any assistance to grow his thick mane.
He said, “No way, absolutely not,” to Us Weekly during an interview on April 30th. “Look at that, it’s a complete head of hair.
Vince has a close relationship with Travis, who is the three-time Super Bowl champion, given that he’s been cutting his hair for quite some time. This friendship stems from their interactions over the years.
Over the course of many years, he’s been visiting my barbershop or my home for haircuts,” he explained. “He relies on me to groom him before an event or a television appearance. Over time, this regular interaction has grown into something like any other relationship – the more we spend time together, the more we both grow and develop personally.
Regarding Travis’s long hair, it was his decision to change his hairstyle following some encouragement from his girlfriend, as shared by his teammate Patrick Mahomes.
The NFL quarterback shared on SiriusXM NFL Radio in August that he’s been encouraging his friend to let his hair grow longer. Suddenly, Taylor managed to persuade him to make the change.
Absolutely, Travis has always taken great care in how he presents himself, especially with his eye-catching clothing style. To put it simply, he’s known for his spontaneous shopping habits when discussing his unique outfits for sporting events.
He shared with WSJ Magazine in October 2023 that he tends to act on impulse, “I guess you could say I intuitively go with my gut feelings.” He also admitted to finding pleasure in the artistic flow of working under pressure, where he can quickly come up with a solution.
He even defended some of his more eccentric styles, noting that “not every look is for everybody.”
He said, “I won’t mind if someone thinks I resemble a clown when I wear a colorful hat and peculiar jeans. After all, that’s just how things are; I’ll simply enjoy the situation.
Keep reading for some facts you may not have known about Travis.
Although Travis Kelce might always have a deep connection with Kansas City, Missouri, his childhood was spent in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio (Cleveland Heights).
Instead of naming his alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, during game broadcasts with player introductions, the man proudly announces his hometown instead.
Which, as you might guess, has irked some fellow alums.
In 2019, Travis shared, “I greatly value the time I spent at the University of Cincinnati, and I hold it dear in my heart. However, there was a period when I struggled there. It was challenging. I lost my scholarship, and I made some unwise decisions. I’m guessing many people here know someone from Cleveland Heights High School who has also made their fair share of mistakes. To my friends, I was that person.
Not only was this place significant to him personally, he added, but it held a special significance for everyone residing here. The rich diversity of this community stirred something within him. Everything I accomplish is dedicated to this city. It might sound trite, yet I assure you, everything I achieve off the field – when you witness me celebrating in the end zone, that’s my tribute to Cleveland Heights, for all of you.
2. About that revoked scholarship…
In the throes of unbridled fandom, I can’t help but recall the electrifying 2009 season when our beloved Bearcats marched undefeated and claimed the Big East crown. However, the euphoria was short-lived as our hero, Travis, found himself in a precarious situation ahead of the 2010 Sugar Bowl. The festivities of New Year’s Eve in the vibrant city of New Orleans had gotten the better of him, and an unfortunate incident involving marijuana marred his test results.
Apart from not participating in the bowl game, he faced a suspension by the NCAA for the entire 2010 season, lost his scholarship, and was left without housing. As a result, he moved into his brother Jason’s room (which he shared with some teammates) and began working as a telemarketer to ask people about their opinions on the Affordable Care Act over the phone.
They did, and Travis could not wait to get back on the field.
3. Before focusing on football, Travis had previously played hockey, baseball, and basketball. During high school, he served as a quarterback. Notably, he was a two-star QB prospect for Cincinnati, but later shifted to tight end due to certain conditions following his reinstatement to the team after a suspension.
In his conversation with Arrowhead Pride after being drafted by the Chiefs in 2013, Travis stated that at the time, we had an exceptional quarterback named Zach Collaros. We also required assistance in both our running and passing games. I discussed this situation with my coach, Butch Jones, who was coaching me then. He suggested we needed a tight end, and since my abilities, athleticism, and direction suited that role, it turned out to be an ideal fit for me.
In 2017, when he reflected on his less-than-stellar performance to GQ, he essentially said, “People have always seen me as a tight end, not a star.
4. In the heart of 127 West Nixon Street, the very place I shared with my buddies Travis, Jason, and a few other Bearcats, was where endless nights filled with mischief underpinned by an unforgettable flow of beer unfolded for me.
Tom DeTemple, a college friend and teammate, shared with the New York Times prior to the 2024 Super Bowl that the brothers were fond of spending long hours playing Nintendo 64. He added that during these gaming sessions, they would simultaneously drink beers and aggressively manipulate the controls. Furthermore, he mentioned that they often devised impromptu drinking games while playing, and they excelled at this unusual skill.
5. And suffice it to say, Travis is extremely proud of being a Bearcat.
As a die-hard alum from the University of Cincinnati, I couldn’t contain my excitement before the 2023 Super Bowl. The Chiefs made it there after defeating none other than my beloved Bengals in the AFC Championship Game. You see, Cincinnati has always held a special place in my heart, and receiving my diploma was just one more reason to feel proud. Whenever I can, I return to the university and try to lend a helping hand. The players and people I’ve met there have been with me through thick and thin, and I miss them dearly.
In the face of adversity from the NCAA, I found solace in the unwavering faith my team, coaches, and staff had in me. They saw potential in me to transform our situation and elevate myself. This belief, during a critical juncture, was incredibly empowering for me.
6 Years post-college draft, I finally graduated with my interdisciplinary studies degree in 2022. However, the thrill of waiting to clutch that diploma came only in April 2024, during a stunning surprise commencement ceremony. This moment was extra special as it coincided with taping a live episode of New Heights at Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena alongside my dear friend Jason.
As the graduate neared the dean for his celebratory handshake, he was already clutching a beer can. Immediately following the handshake, he downed the beer.
And Travis was going to graduate in 2022 but he missed his flight.
7. Due mainly to his issues away from the field, Travis was selected fifth among tight ends in the 2013 NFL Draft, being chosen in the third round by the Chiefs. Subsequently, coach Andy Reid, who had previously coached Jason in Philadelphia, asked the older Kelce brother to endorse Travis.
Andy and Travis have three Super Bowl rings to show for Jason’s endorsement.
8. For years prior, Travis had the habit of playing Randy Newman’s “Burn On” as his pre-game music, although the genre he favors has evolved since then.
In his interview on the PFT Live podcast in 2017, he shared that as a child raised on the east side of Cleveland, there’s something about this particular song that transports him back to memories of family and contemplates where he is in life, expressing deep gratitude for it.
Let us explain: It’s in the opening credits of Major League, the ultimate Cleveland sports movie.
9. Everyone, including Travis, is mispronouncing his last name.
Although they’ve just left with Kelce, who sounds like “Kel-see,” it is actually pronounced the same as “else.
Travis’ teammate Chris Jones dropped a surprising revelation on Inside the NFL in January, saying “Freaky, isn’t it?” This claim was later verified when Travis and his brothers discussed it with their father Ed Kelce on their New Heights podcast.
Jason wondered aloud, “What made you suddenly decide to change your name to Kel-see? After all, we had been using our original names for 24 years in my case and 25 years in yours, Trav.
Ed admitted he “got tired of correcting people” but urged his son to “do whatever you want.”
10. Travis, who wears jersey number 87 during his NFL career, pays tribute to Jason, born in the year 1987.
Travis clarified to NFL Films before the 2023 Super Bowl, which saw his Chiefs facing off against Jason’s Eagles, that if there is a Kelce legacy in the NFL, it stems from the birth of this tall player in 1987.
11. For quite some time, Travis’ foundation and Running has been generously supporting Operation Breakthrough, a nonprofit educational center in Kansas City. This organization is one that Travis has collaborated with since his initial visit in 2015, where he read “The Cat in the Hat” to the children.
Yes, reader, he wore the hat.
Afterwards, Travis made investments in the Smart Lab as well as purchasing the adjacent auto repair shop (previously a muffler shop), enabling them to grow and establish their Ignition Lab. In this space, young scholars transform old cars that might have been destined for scrap into functional electric vehicles instead.
12. Travis and Jason affectionately refer to their listeners as “92%ers,” a term derived from Jason’s past statement that a specific play, known as a quarterback sneak, was successful approximately 92% of the time when only one yard is needed to score a touchdown.
Apparently, fans joyfully referred to themselves as the “92 percenters” on the podcast’s site, a term reminiscent of their private symbol, yet expressed through language.
Who were the Kelce brothers to argue with that?
13. Travis is accompanied by three personal trainers – Alex Skacel, Andrew Spruill, and Laurence Justin Ng – and, as reported by The Athletic, one of them typically joins him on his trips to maintain his physical fitness for football throughout the entire year.
Alex, who happens to be a physical therapist too, remembered that Travis had expressed a desire to go for an evening jog, following a busy schedule at the Paris Fashion Week, as he hadn’t exercised that particular day due to being engrossed in numerous shows.
At midnight, our coach instructed the New York Times in April that we were performing sprints across the bridges over the river. Regardless of his location, he always manages to complete everything necessary on his to-do list.
14. Travis’ long-time friend, Kumar Ferguson, who is his personal chef, goes back to their days together in the fourth grade at Cleveland Heights.
In 2016, while he was pursuing his passion for cooking as an amateur, he found himself behind the wheel of a truck. That’s when Travis reached out and presented him with an exciting opportunity.
In 2023, Kumar expressed to Vanity Fair that the individual said something along the lines of, “I’m committed to improving my diet and really stepping it up.” To which Kumar responded with a sense of determination, “Alright, let’s go for it.” A few days later, he found himself in Kansas City.
I’ve taken care of various tasks, from ensuring Travis’ fridge is stocked to delivering well-balanced meals at the Chiefs’ training facility.
15. Travis is receiving closer scrutiny on his facial hair than before, hence he shared on New Heights that he trimmed off his off-season beard last year and retained the mustache as a tribute to Andy Reid’s walrus style, planning to carry it forward in 2024 as well.
16. In April 2024, when Travis agreed to a two-year deal worth $34.25 million, he became the highest-earning tight end in the NFL for the first time throughout his professional career.
Which finally put an end to years of chatter about how much money he wasn’t making.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair back in 2023, I jokingly shared that my superiors and representatives often remind me of my underappreciated pay scale. Whenever I bring up the topic of financial compensation, they respond with something along the lines of, “Perhaps you should consider approaching the Chiefs about it.
However, as other revenue streams became available to him, his focus shifted from the paycheck towards the overall atmosphere or feel of the situation.
In my perspective, the allure of a free market can be captivating, but the reality sets in when one finds themselves not emerging victorious. As a firm believer in triumph, I cherish success and thrive in my current circumstances.
Admittedly, watching other players receive large rewards can give you a bit of a pang. It makes one wonder if they are being treated unfairly. I’m not sure I would push myself harder if it meant getting the supposed value, but I do appreciate going to that place every day.
17′. As a lifestylist, I’ve always had a soft spot for fashion, dating back to my days growing up in the vibrant Cleveland Heights community. Each school day felt like a runway show, showcasing an array of unique styles that fueled my passion for all things fashionable. (Vanity Fair interview, 2023)
To optimize storage for my designer clothes and over 300 pairs of sneakers, including the size-13 Nike Air Mags I splurged on during my first year in the league, albeit a bit snug for my feet, I transformed my bedroom into a walk-in closet.
Previously, during the early stages of his career, before there were numerous sneaker apps available, he stated to the Wall Street Journal that he would buy whatever shoe size he could find of the shoe he desired.
He has a strong affinity for Nike shoes, but that’s not just due to their endorsements. Chuck Taylors also hold a special place in his heart as they evoke memories of the fictional baseball prodigy Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez from The Sandlot.
18. Among his dozens of investments, Travis co-owns Ohio-brewed Garage Beer with Jason.
In a statement made in June, Travis expressed that it’s no secret he enjoys a few beers occasionally. He finds it thrilling, he added, to be the owner of Garage Beer and deeply engaged in crafting exceptional light beer. For him, there’s nothing more unifying than an ice-cold brew, and the essence of beer, as he sees it, is friendship, family, and fun, with Jason sharing similar sentiments.
19. We’re sensing a theme when it comes to Travis’ guilty pleasure TV choices.
In the past, it was known as “Gossip Girl”: “Let me tell you, it’s fantastic,” he commented on “New Heights”. “It’s like a TV series set in New York high schools filled with plenty of drama and essentially everyone spreading rumors and talking negatively about each other.
His new favorite show? Peacock’s Emmy-winning backstab-a-ganza The Traitors.
20. As he enters his 12th season in the NFL at the age of 35, Travis has become increasingly candid about the physical strain the sport puts on a player’s body.
However, he has faced numerous setbacks from the very beginning, starting with a microfracture in his knee during his rookie season, which led to the first of the ten surgeries he underwent throughout his career.
21. Travis openly discussed an unsuccessful endeavor he had during Taylor Swift’s concert in Kansas City, where he tried to present her with a friendship bracelet bearing his phone number, as he chatted on the “New Heights” podcast.
After learning through various sources within her circle about Travis’s desire to meet her, she reached out to him directly.
He shared with WSJ. Magazine that she clearly explained the situation, and fortunately, she contacted him.
22. For as long as he can remember, French toast smothered in whipped cream and drizzled with syrup has been one of Travis’ preferred dessert choices.
But more recently he’s become a fan of his girlfriend’s homemade Pop-Tarts and cinnamon rolls.
23. One of Travis’ ringtones features Chris Farley exclaiming “Good grief!” in the style of his character from ‘Tommy Boy’.
He shared with WSJ. The Magazine that he’d revealed his love for the humor of Farley, Adam Sandler, and Will Ferrell to his girlfriend, explaining, “I made it clear: This is what I vibe with.
24. Following their AFC Championship victory against the Bengals in 2019, Travis exhorted “You’ve got to fight for your right to party!” This inspired the Chiefs to play the Beastie Boys song of the same title following every touchdown scored at Arrowhead Stadium after each home game.
Travis Kelce functions like a power amplifier. It’s challenging to fully grasp how significant that trait is,” said Chiefs general manager Brett Veach in 2020 to ESPN. “He embodies character, charm, enthusiasm, and manages to draw others into his circle. In our facility, everyone seems to be pals with Travis Kelce. He’s not just a mood booster but also a focus enhancer, attention grabber. By the end of the day, he remains entertaining.
However, the lively host who introduced it into their lives confessed that he wasn’t familiar with all the lyrics of the 1986 hit until he was asked to perform it alongside Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in February 2023.
25. Reflecting on Taylor’s music, I found myself drawn to three of her tracks in May 2024: “Blank Space,” “The Alchemy,” and “So High School.” These songs resonated deeply with me.
Inquired about the matter back in September, but when probed, he replied that he loved them all equally – literally every single one.
26. Early in his career, comparisons were drawn between Travis and the esteemed Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, who hung up his cleats in 2013 following a 17-year stint in the league.
In 2015, as discussions intensified about whether he could match Tony’s accomplishments and the potential letdown if he fell short, Travis chose to disregard the commotion.
In his conversation with Complex, he shared, “I set the bar higher for myself more than anyone else does. I strive to achieve the most outstanding statistical season a tight end has ever recorded.
On September 29th, Travis outdid Tony by making his 917th reception, earning him the title of the Kansas City Chiefs’ record holder for most receptions.
Travis remarked on New Heights: “It’s amazing how things seem to repeat themselves.” Now standing at the top of the leaderboard with the Kansas City Chiefs, an organization that dates back to the ’60s and has a longstanding history, he finds himself in awe. Much of this success is attributed to their rich past, as well as Tony Gonzalez – a mentor who’s had a significant impact on him. He truly admires the man.
27. Of Travis’ many accomplishments, keeping his house in order on his own isn’t one of them.
“He can’t clean,” mom Donna Kelce told Extra in September. “He can’t cook.”
Maybe inviting a special person while they are visiting town has given me an additional push to tidy up and organize my place properly.
“He’s getting a little better,” Donna acknowledged. “I think he’s getting some help.”
