Hal Jordan Turns EVIL: Absolute Green Lantern’s Shocking Villain Twist Explained

The extraordinary Green Lantern title persists in offering a groundbreaking revamp of DC Comics’ iconic power-driven space enforcement agents in its second installment. The core concept of the Absolute Universe revolves around making hope the underdog, and the creative minds behind each comic have been extensively reshaping the origins and mythology of every character they can manipulate. Unlike any other title except for Absolute Martian Manhunter, Absolute Green Lantern brings about the most alterations to its cherished band of characters. For instance, Abin Sur is portrayed as a divine judge with an appearance reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z‘s characters, and Guy Gardner has met his demise in this series. Among various changes, this series transforms fan-favorite Green Lantern Hal Jordan into one of the Green Lantern Corps’ most formidable adversaries.

In this particular universe, Hal Jordan doesn’t embody the role of a ring-wielding savior as we know from other stories. Instead, following the distressing emergence of Abin Sur, Hal found himself imbued with the power of the Black Hand rather than a Green Lantern ring. He referred to his new dark appendage as the Black Hand in the second issue itself, stating that it craved to devour the life and radiance around him until there was nothing but emptiness left. By the end of the comic, Hal’s eyes and speech bubbles turned entirely black, hinting at the Hand’s corruptive influence upon him. As such, Hal Jordan no longer represents a hero in this series, and it seems he may well be transitioning into its primary antagonist.

What is the Black Hand?

In the primary DC Universe, Black Hand is a specific character who goes by the supervillain name, often targeting Green Lantern. His real identity is William Hand, a man fixated with death and an outcast from the prestigious Hand family. Through his own intelligence or due to Red Lantern Atrocitus, he acquired a device capable of draining energy from Green Lantern’s ring and creating constructs of its own. Subsequently, he transformed into Scar’s avatar, becoming the first Black Lantern, initiating the “Blackest Night” saga. Black Hand has had encounters with the Source Wall, gaining the unsettling power to turn anything he touches into stone.

On numerous occasions over the years, he frequently conflicted with Green Lantern, making Hal Jordan his most consistent adversary. However, Black Hand repeatedly attempted to abandon his criminal lifestyle, only to return, either due to fear of the heroes or a morbid obsession with death and the deceased. Now, this dark association with Death has been transferred to the Multiverse of Omnipotence’s Hal Jordan.

Hal Jordan is the Absolute Black Hand

In a fascinating twist of storytelling, the enigmatic Universe seems to be toyingly obscuring the true identity of the Black Hand. However, one point remains undeniable; it embodies death. In both the imaginative Emotional Spectrum and tangible light spectrum, black signifies the void where all light disappears. Essentially, it is a symbol for entropy, pure decay. Hal Jordan has repeatedly demonstrated this, as he struggles to halt the Black Hand’s relentless absorption of everything in its path. According to his own words, the Black Hand craves the Green Light that envelops Jo, aiming to “win the debate” and extinguish all life. This debate, it appears, is a struggle between the Black Hand and light, a battle over how to vanquish fear.

In simpler terms, both Hal and Jo are receiving messages from mysterious visions that they need to overcome fear. These visions may be guiding them towards the Black Hand or Green Light, each wanting different outcomes. The Green Light encourages Jo to conquer her fear by rising above it, whereas the Black Hand urges Hal to eliminate his fear by annihilating everything until there’s nothing left, not even him. If the Black Hand is indeed linked to Death, then Hal Jordan could be a formidable villain across the entire Multiverse, potentially making his Parallax period seem insignificant in comparison.

I deeply admire Hal Jordan, and I eagerly anticipate the moment when Jo manages to break the Black Hand curse and ignite his inner strength with the Green Lantern’s willpower. Naturally, before she can save him, she needs to restore his consciousness. Personally, I am quite excited about how this situation unfolds.
