Halle Berry, Lisa, Doja Cat and More Star in Oscars James Bond Tribute

James Bond could use an assist from Her Majesty’s Secret Service these days.

Meanwhile, as the future of the iconic film franchise is being determined, the 2025 Oscars paused to honor the films that started it all 63 years earlier, with “Dr. No” leading the way and featuring Sean Connery in the starring role.

For quite some time, filmmakers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have been recognized for their exceptional work in producing franchises. Recently, they received honors at the Board of Governors Awards, and during a recent ceremony, actress Halle Berry – who portrayed the character Jinx in the 2002 movie “Die Another Day” alongside Pierce Brosnan – introduced a heartfelt musical tribute dedicated to the James Bond films in their honor. (Take a look at all the winners of the 2025 Oscars.)

Referring to Wilson and Broccoli as the “heart and core” of the movies, recognized for their “distinctive blend of peril, elegance, and suspense,” she was swiftly accompanied by various dancers – among them, a sudden emergence by Margaret Qualley (fueling the upcoming speculations about casting!) – eventually making way for Lisa to perform “Live and Let Die.

Later, Doja Cat performed “Diamonds Are Forever.” Following that, Raye stepped up to perform “Skyfall,” which was Adele’s Academy Award-winning James Bond theme song from the year 2013.

In 1974, the song “Live and Let Die,” composed by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney for the movie Wings, was outranked by “The Way We Were.” Interestingly, the first Bond theme to be recognized for Best Original Song was “The Look of Love,” a collaboration between Burt Bacharach and Hal David from the 1968 film Casino Royale.

It so happened that Michelle Yeoh from the 1997 film “Tomorrow Never Dies”, and Ana de Armas were at the Dolby Theatre on March 2nd, not by design but coincidentally. However, given that half of its six Oscar wins (from a total of 19 nominations) were for Best Original Song, a musical tribute seemed particularly appropriate.

Following Adele setting the ball rolling, Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes claimed victory in 2016 for “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre, while Billie Eilish and Finneas secured their win in 2022 for the theme song of No Time to Die.

Earlier on, Goldfinger received the award for Best Sound Effects in 1965, Thunderball took home the prize for Best Special Visual Effects in 1966, and Skyfall also secured a win for Best Sound Editing.

Just like James Bond has changed over time, as Berry noted, so too have the technical classifications.
