Halloween: Hulk and Groot Get Marvel Zombies Spinoff Comic

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has seen countless reincarnations of popular franchises, I must say that Marvel’s decision to bring back their Zombies saga with “Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay” is nothing short of brilliant! This series promises to be a thrilling blend of action, horror, and the witty banter we’ve come to expect from the Marvel Universe.

The storyline of Marvel’s “Zombies” is expanding. Over two decades since Robert Kirkman transformed the Marvel Universe into the “Zombiverse” of Earth-2149 through his creation of “The Walking Dead”, Marvel Comics is once again resurrecting the undead in a new series titled “Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay“. This four-issue limited series, penned by TV and comic writer Tom Krajewski (making his Marvel debut) and illustrated by Jason Muhr (“Spider-Man 2099” artist), takes place in its own timeline and pairs the Hulk and Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy, who are the remaining superheroes after an alien virus turns Marvel’s heroes and villains into plant-based zombies.

In a recently unveiled depiction by Muhr (see below), we find an unexpected scenario where Groot inadvertently spreads a contagion to Captain America. This infected Captain America then bites Black Widow and Thor, transforming the Avengers into terrifying creatures that feed on brains. Additionally, variant covers for this upcoming series are provided by Nick Bradshaw (from ‘Star Wars: Inquisitors’), Ron Lim (‘The Life of Wolverine’), Annie Wu (‘Hawkeye’), and Sean Galloway (‘Venom’). As a gamer stepping into the shoes of Groot, I find myself in a pickle. A new zombie virus has been released, and guess who’s ground zero? Yep, it’s me! I’m feeling under the weather, not just because Rocket’s latest plan put us on the Avengers’ radar, but also because I’ve got a runny sap nose. Things take a turn for the worse when an unfortunate sneeze lands on Captain America’s face, causing a chain of unforeseen events!

The publishing house brought back and rejuvenated the “Marvel Zombies” series in 2020 with “Marvel Zombies: Resurrection,” followed by the 2023 horror collection “Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood.” In this zombie-infested Marvel Universe, you can find thrilling tales about characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Blade. The first issue of the new series, “Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay” #1, is available on September 4th, with the four-part series continuing until Halloween.
