As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16 has made a splendid debut in Tekken 8. It’s like Bandai Namco took a page straight out of the Encyclopedia Eudora and crafted this character with such precision and attention to detail that it feels like I’ve stepped into the world of Final Fantasy myself!
In the spotlight for Final Fantasy 16, Clive Rosfield, has been announced as the initial guest character within Tekken 8, marking the conclusion of the game’s inaugural season pass.
Equipped with his reliable sword and an array of abilities linked to Eikon, Clive seems to fit more comfortably within the realm of SoulCalibur compared to Tekken. Interestingly, much like Noctis in Tekken 7 – another downloadable character – Clive has been exceptionally well-crafted in Bandai Namco’s latest generation fighting game.
Truly impressive is the level of dedication put into crafting this character. Every aspect, from his fluid movements and combat style to the sound cues for his attacks, demonstrates an exceptional level of commitment by the Tekken team. His distinctive introductions and victory quotes capture the essence of Clive that Final Fantasy 16 fans will instantly recognize.
As a dedicated fan, I can attest that bringing any guest character to life in a contemporary fighting game is no easy feat, but crafting Clive’s arsenal must have posed a unique challenge. Given that Final Fantasy XVI is primarily an action-based title, with Clive gaining an array of magical abilities as the narrative unfolds, it certainly seems like a complex task to adapt such intricate abilities for combat in this new setting.
At the culmination of his journey, Clive has transformed into an individual with god-like powers, capable of effortlessly switching between destructive elemental attacks. Remarkably, Tekken 8 skillfully integrates these abilities into a consistent and understandable sequence of moves. This is truly a remarkable feat in terms of design.
It’s not surprising that Clive is delightful to control in the game. He’s user-friendly even for beginners, offering a variety of simple combo sequences to kickstart your gaming experience. However, as with most characters in Tekken 8, there’s a noticeable layer of complexity to his aggressive style if you want to delve deeper.
Initially, you can employ his Phoenix Shift to bridge the gap quickly and exert immediate force using a mix of high, mid, and low attacks that essentially pulverize your adversary. Additionally, he has an airborne Bahamut stance which appears ideal for scenarios where your opponent is down, and they’re being compelled to rise in particular ways.
He additionally possesses several swift, extended sword slashes that aid in managing space, making it advantageous for novice players who might not be fully acquainted with the movement mechanics in Tekken 8.
In Heat, Clive figuratively ignites from within, embodying his Ifrit essence. This transformative state grants him extra combat abilities, and with Torgal, his faithful canine ally, you can link certain moves for a fluid attack sequence. Everything about this is beautifully animated.
After a thrilling sequence of sword swipes, Clive morphs into Ifrit, snatches his foe in mid-flight, and smashes them forcefully into the earth accompanied by a colossal blast. In simpler terms, his Rage Art is the cherry on top of the fight.
Among all the spectacular Rage Arts in Tekken 8, what stands out the most is that using it concludes a fight leads to an exclusive victory pose, accompanied by the triumphant music from Final Fantasy 16. Simply put, it’s nothing short of magnificent.
In Tekken 8, we greatly admire the character Clive, however, it’s important to note his unique stage as well. While it’s a separate download, acquiring Clive automatically grants you access to this stage. Reminiscent of Final Fantasy 16’s opening, the stage showcases an epic battle between Ifrit and Phoenix in the backdrop. The re-creation is impressive, offering a spacious arena enveloped by fiery flames for dynamic gameplay.
As the contest nears its climactic round, you’ll witness an epic scene: Ifrit snatches Phoenix from mid-flight and delivers a powerful punch straight to the bird’s chest. This clash triggers a shift in scenery, transporting the combatants to the infernal depths of Clive’s subconscious, where two Ifrits engage in a fierce battle.
You can practically see the budget pouring out of the screen, all while ‘Find the Flame’ from Final Fantasy 16’s soundtrack injects the necessary hype. In fact, our only criticism of the DLC is that the Tekken sound team didn’t (or couldn’t get permission to) remix the borrowed music tracks.
The Final Fantasy 15 track that was remixed for Noctis’ inclusion in Tekken 7 was an absolute banger — but at the same time, you could argue that Final Fantasy 16’s themes are simply too good to tweak in the first place.
In essence, Tekken 8’s first DLC season reaches an exciting culmination. Initially, Clive might not seem like the perfect character for the series with regards to his fighting style. However, Bandai Namco has astonishingly crafted a remarkable adaptation of Ifrit’s Dominant combat style.
