As a compassionate observer, I find myself deeply moved by the heart-wrenching story of Hannah Kobayashi and her family. The turbulent journey they have been through is a stark reminder of the fragility of human connections and the unpredictability of life.
Hannah Kobayashi has returned to U.S. soil.
31-year-old, whose mysterious absence in Los Angeles recently led to extensive police operations and heartfelt appeals from her relatives, has now returned to safety from Mexico.
According to a statement made by the Los Angeles Police Department on December 16, 2024, they received information from Customs Border Protection stating that Hannah Kobayashi showed up at the U.S. border on December 15, 2024, and seemed healthy.
Hannah’s family also confirmed to ABC7 on Dec. 16 that she has returned safely.
According to a statement by the LAPD, her return signifies that the case is now conclusively resolved, and she has been taken out of the database for Missing and Unknown Individuals.
Upon finding footage suggesting Hannah had voluntarily traveled towards the Mexico border and entered the country, I, as a dedicated follower, understood that authorities started to scale back their search efforts. On December 2nd, LAPD observed her to be in good health and alone, leading them to categorize her as a person who willingly went missing.
During the month-long hunt for Hannah in November, it was reported that her father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life on November 24th, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
Three days before he passed away, Ryan expressed to NBC4 News, “It’s every parent’s worst fear,” stating that they were at a loss about where and how to even begin dealing with the situation. He likened it to a single grain of sand lost in the vastness of the ocean.
On December 11th, it was verified by Sydni Kobayashi and Brandi Yee (her sister and mother) that they had managed to reach her.
They expressed great relief and gratitude that Hannah was safely found, as they shared with NBC News. The last month has been a heart-wrenching experience for our family, and we humbly request solitude while we grieve and work through the trauma we’ve endured.
The family’s message ended with sincere gratitude to all who stood by them in tough times. Your compassion and care has truly made a difference for us.

On the 8th of November, Hannah Kobayashi boarded a plane departing from Maui and headed towards Los Angeles. Her plan was to transfer to another flight there, which was intended to take her to New York’s JFK International Airport, as reported by L.A. police.
Hannah shared a flight with her former boyfriend, as confirmed by her sister, Sydni Kobayashi, in an article from the Los Angeles Times. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get a refund on their tickets, but they had decided to part ways upon landing in New York City, where Hannah was headed for a concert and a photography assignment.
Hannah didn’t take off on her flight departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), according to a statement from the LAPD. In the meantime, her luggage was transported to her final stop, but she asked for it to be returned to LAX.
Surveillance video reviewed by police showed the 30-year-old picking up her bag at LAX on Nov. 11.
When Hannah reached Los Angeles, she stopped by the Taschen bookstore situated at The Grove shopping center on November 9th and shared a picture of a book with a relative via text message. This information was reported to the Los Angeles Times by Hannah’s aunt, Larie Pidgeon. Additionally, Hannah provided her Maui address when she filled out a newsletter form at that location.
According to Larie, who is a relative traveling from Maui, they traced Hannah’s location using photo data which led them to Taschen. Upon arrival, they verified with local staff that Hannah had indeed been there.
On November 10th, Hannah visited the LeBron XXII Trial Experience, which was held at The Grove’s Nike store. That very day, she shared a photo of feet adorned in Jordan gear, acknowledging the LA Times and specifying her location as “City of Angels, Los Angeles, California.
Larie shared with the Times that they believed she had been hanging out near The Grove. It’s quite popular with tourists, filled with numerous shops, bookstores, and museums, making it likely that she was there to explore and enjoy the sights while feeling secure.
According to Larie, Hannah’s text messages to the family appeared typical, with complaints about not securing another flight being included among them.
However, as reported by The Times on November 11, Larie went on to say that Hannah expressed concern about her personal identity and wealth allegedly being stolen, following which nobody could reach her.
Larie mentioned that she used terms such as ‘honey’ and ‘darling’, and claimed someone was attempting to embezzle her money. However, this isn’t typical of her behavior. Her words seemed unusual and raised red flags among her family.
Larie told KTLA that she received “odd, mysterious messages, they mentioned ‘the matrix,’ and it was completely out of character for her.” Then, suddenly, there was no further contact.
Hannah’s phone was last active at 4 p.m. on November 11th, specifically at LAX airport, a location where authorities indicated she retrieved her luggage.
Her family reported her missing the following day.
On November 18, it was announced by Hannah’s family that they had viewed security camera recordings indicating she disembarked a train at the Pico Metro station adjacent to Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A. around 10 p.m. on November 11.
I’ve taken note that Hannah seems unwell, and I want to emphasize that she’s not facing this challenge alone, as expressed by her family via a Facebook post.
As reported by the police, Hannah traveled approximately three miles to Union Station, which is distant from the arena. At Union Station, she utilized her passport to buy a bus ticket that took her close to the California-Mexico border.
On November 12th, the police reported that she got on a bus headed for San Ysidro, a city famously known as the “Gate to America,” being the most southerly city in California and a commonly used crossing point for borders.
On November 21st, relatives held a demonstration and distributed leaflets close to the downtown area where Hannah was last spotted.
At the gathering, Aunt Larie requested, “Could you all keep on mentioning Hannah Kobayashi’s name? Everyone in our family is present, and many more around the world are searching for her. If it’s possible for you and if you can get in touch, please do so. We just want to hear from you, we’re not angry.” (per KTLA)
As an overly enthusiastic admirer, I excitedly echo Ryan Kobayashi’s words: “She’s a stunning young lady, both inside and out. If there’s any chance to connect with her, go for it!
At the rally, he expressed to NBC4 that it’s every parent’s worst fear, stating, “We’re utterly lost, without direction. It’s as if we’re just one tiny speck amidst an endless ocean.
On November 24th, as reported by the police, Ryan Kobayashi, visiting from Maui in search of Hannah, tragically leapt from a parking garage close to LAX. The incident occurred around 4 a.m., and authorities were dispatched to the 6100 block of Century Boulevard following a report of an unresponsive male.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s findings, Ryan sustained numerous severe injuries from non-penetrating impacts, and his death was ruled a suicide.
At the November 21 rally, Ryan expressed that it’s a parents’ worst fear: “We’re at a loss, unsure how or where to even start addressing this situation. It feels overwhelming, just like trying to find one grain of sand in the vast ocean.
In a statement, the RAD Movement – a nonprofit organization that supports families with missing members – confirmed that Ryan had spent 13 days in Los Angeles, diligently looking for his daughter.
The statement made by the group highlighted that this loss significantly increased the family’s sorrow beyond measure. They also stressed the importance of continued vigilance, as there was still a missing woman named Hannah that needed to be found.
Speculation that Ryan had something to do with Hannah’s disappearance was cruel and needed to be shut down, Larie told the LA Times. “He died of a broken heart,” she said.
On December 2nd, the LAPD revealed that their latest sighting of Hannah was on November 12th, as she crossed the border from San Ysidro to Mexico by herself, with her belongings in tow.
As a lifestyle expert, I recently found myself delving into an intriguing case involving a missing individual. On December 1st, I teamed up with investigators from our local Missing Persons Unit to cross the border in search of crucial evidence. We were fortunate enough to gain access to surveillance footage from U.S. Customs and Border Protection which showed her walking into Mexico. As we continue our investigation, every piece of information like this helps us piece together the puzzle.
The LAPD has classified Hannah as a missing person by choice, as they have neither implicated her in any illegal activities nor found proof suggesting human trafficking or suspicious circumstances.
According to what they told NBC News, Hannah’s loved ones expressed optimism that she was secure and continued their search for her.
They stated on Dec 3rd, “The quest for her whereabouts is still in progress, but we are resolute in our efforts to secure her safe return. We yearn for clarity and a resolution that guarantees Hannah’s safety. We implore the authorities and public to maintain their focus on locating her and refrain from jumping to premature or speculative conclusions.
On Dec. 11, Hannah’s sister Sydni and mom Brandi Yee said they had made contact with her.
They expressed their immense relief and gratitude that Hannah was found safely in a statement to NBC News. The previous month had been an indescribably difficult experience for their family, so they humbly request privacy during this period of healing and reflection on their ordeal.
