Happy Place: Bridgerton Producer to Showrun Jennifer Lopez's Emily Henry TV Series

As a voracious reader and an ardent fan of Emily Henry’s heartwarming stories, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of yet another one of her captivating novels being brought to life on the small screen. The announcement that Bridgerton and Santa Clarita Diet veteran Leila Cohan will co-write and showrun Netflix’s adaptation of Henry’s 2023 novel, Happy Place, has sent my anticipation soaring like a seagull over the rocky cliffs of Maine, where the story unfolds.

The adaptation of Emily Henry’s novel “Happy Place” is edging closer to becoming a TV reality. This week, it was announced that Leila Cohan, known for her work in ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Santa Clarita Diet’, will co-write and take on the role of showrunner for the Netflix adaptation. The “Happy Place” series has been under development at Netflix for several months now, with Jennifer Lopez, an actress and singer, producing the project through a deal she holds with Netflix. Other producers on the series will include Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.

Cohan is Emmy nominated for her work on Bridgerton, with her filmography already including The Perfect Couple, Special, The First Wives Club, Santa Clarita Diet, and Awkward.

What Is Happy Place About?

“Happy Place” revolves around Harriet and Wyn, who’ve been an inseparable pair since college – as compatible as salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. However, things have changed recently; they’re no longer a couple, though they haven’t revealed the reasons to each other or their friends yet. Five months have passed since their breakup, and they’ve kept their relationship status hidden from their closest companions. Now, they’re sharing a bedroom at a Maine cottage that has been their group’s annual retreat for over a decade. They continue to deceive their friends about their relationship situation while trying to navigate their feelings in close quarters.

Henry elaborated in an earlier conversation with Entertainment Weekly that the central idea was these couples had previously fallen in love, and sometimes their journey isn’t fully shown on screen. It’s difficult to make readers invest emotionally in a relationship that has already ended, but this is the kind of challenge I look for when selecting my next book. What truly captivated me about the story was the opportunity for a second chance.

What Is People We Meet on Vacation About?

The delightful announcement about “Happy Place” coincides with Netflix confirming the cast for the upcoming movie version of Henry’s 2021 book, People We Meet on Vacation. Tom Blyth, known for his role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Emily Bader from My Lady Jane will play Alex and Poppy respectively. Brett Haley, director of Hearts Beat Loud and All the Bright Places, is at the helm of this project. In the film, free-spirited Poppy (portrayed by Bader) and rule-bound Alex (Blyth), who have been inseparable friends for a decade despite living in different cities, share their summers together. The delicate equilibrium of their friendship is challenged when they start to ponder whether they might just be destined to be each other’s perfect romantic partners.

As a devoted fan myself, I must admit I’ve been on edge about who would bring Poppy and Alex to life. But now, I can honestly say that my confidence is sky-high! I truly believe that my readers, along with many others yet unacquainted with the book, will utterly fall for Poppy and Alex.

Netflix’s Happy Place television series does not currently have a release date.
