Harley Quinn TV Show Almost Created Its Own DC Supervillain

As a seasoned gamer and DC enthusiast with over two decades of comic book-inspired adventures under my belt, I must say that the Harley Quinn animated series has been a refreshing twist to the DC universe. The creators’ decision not to include the character Brown Stain was wise, as they have more than enough established characters to play with.

Over four seasons, a holiday special, and a spinoff series, the animated world of Harley Quinn has distinctly reimagined the DC universe. The upcoming fifth season of Max’s series primarily focuses on Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco), Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), and several other DC villains. Initially, an entirely new character named “Brown Stain” was almost added to the main cast, but the creators, Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, opted instead to adhere to the established DC mythos when discussing this potential addition with ComicBook in a recent interview.

Halpern shared during our interview (you can watch it above) that we had conceived both a desired superhero and villain for our team, who went by the name Brownstone. However, due to an embarrassing incident where he soiled himself during a live TV rescue mission, everyone started referring to him as “Brown Stain.” This humiliation led him to join Harley’s crew, becoming a villain in the process. When DC pointed out that they already had over 20,000 superheroes and villains for us to choose from, we agreed and found another character instead. In hindsight, Brown Stain was not suitable for the show, as DC had a wealth of characters available for us to work with. So, while it’s an intriguing aspect of Harley’s backstory that never materialized, it’s understandable why DC made the decision they did. This isn’t me advocating for “Justice For Brown Stain,” but rather acknowledging the fascinating tale behind a character that didn’t make the final cut.

Initially, it seemed natural for us to focus on certain characters who appeared amusing or shallow at first. Characters like Dex-Starr, the Red Lantern cat that vomits blood, were simply seen as a quick joke or one-dimensional humor. However, thanks to the advice of others, we decided to delve deeper into character development for these individuals.

What Is Harley Quinn Season 5 About?

In the upcoming fifth season of Harley Quinn, Harley, Ivy, and their gang are moving from Gotham to Metropolis, which promises plenty of laughter due to this contrast. As Halpern and Schumacker shared with ComicBook in an interview, this change of location will give Harley and Ivy’s romantic relationship a fresh start.

Harley Season 5 is on its way, we just don’t know exactly when it will air yet, so there’s something exciting to anticipate! According to Schumacker, this season might feature a significant location shift. Previews shown at Comic-Con suggest that much of the action in Season 5 will take place in Metropolis. In an effort to add some excitement to their relationship, Harley and Ivy plan to move to a new setting.

The first four seasons of Harley Quinn are available to stream exclusively on Max.
