Among the surprising absences in Universal Studios’ recently unveiled UK theme park is undoubtedly its most internationally renowned series: Harry Potter. Given that a 476-acre resort in Bedfordshire, an hour north of London, has been confirmed, and concept art suggests lands linked to Jurassic Park, Shrek, and Back to the Future, it didn’t take long for fans to point out what was missing—and that’s Hogwarts Castle.

Although Harry Potter boasts strong cultural roots with the United Kingdom and the Wizarding World attractions at Universal Studios Orlando, Hollywood, Osaka, and Beijing have been hugely successful, there’s been no formal announcement about a Potter-themed land being developed at Universal’s initial European park. Furthermore, no sketches that look like Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley can be found in the official blueprints.

It seems unusual for Universal Studios to omit their dearest enchanted series, particularly in the nation where the stories and movies originated.

The Warner Bros. Roadblock Theory

The answer may lie not in Universal’s plans—but in Warner Bros.’ protections.

Right outside London lies one of the United Kingdom’s largest tourist magnets: Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, situated in none other than Leavesden Studios where the movies were actually filmed. This marvel opened its doors in 2012 and annually attracts millions of enthusiasts who wish to delve deeper into the movie-making magic. Here, you’ll find real sets, props, and costumes that bring the enchanting world of Harry Potter to life.

This place isn’t like a regular theme park, and that’s perfectly fine. Its tour is unrivaled in the region, creating quite the buzz. It’s plausible that Warner Bros. has exclusive rights to feature the Harry Potter series in themed entertainment attractions within the UK, possibly limited to specific categories or regions.

This theory is similar to the ongoing scenario between Marvel and Universal Studios in the U.S., where Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando holds exclusive rights to major Marvel characters on the east coast. A decades-long contract restricts Disney from constructing comprehensive Marvel realms at Walt Disney World, despite their acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009.

Disney managed to open the Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort in California; this was possible as it is situated west of the Mississippi River, falling outside Universal’s license jurisdiction.

In the case of Harry Potter within the United Kingdom, it might be just the opposite: Universal has worldwide theme park rights, yet there’s a possibility that these rights don’t apply in the UK market due to prior Warner Bros. contracts linked to Leavesden Studios and the Studio Tour.

Missed Opportunity or Strategic Tradeoff?

It would be quite unexpected if Harry Potter was missing from Universal’s theme park in the UK, considering the strong ties the franchise has with the UK culture. From its original British literature to the entire film series being shot there, the bond between the Wizarding World and the UK runs deep.

Universal appears to be employing a strategic plan, as its park currently houses intellectual properties with broad international appeal such as Jurassic Park, Fast & Furious, and Shrek. Additionally, trademarked events like Halloween Horror Nights and Back to the Future indicate that they’re preparing nostalgic and seasonal content. However, the absence of Harry Potter may impact global attendance, particularly among international families who visit the park in large numbers.

Despite this setback, Warner Bros. might find advantage from it since their Leavesden Studio Tour keeps growing and attracting more visitors annually. If rights do limit Universal’s use of Potter in the UK, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for regional licensing to divide territories in the theme park industry—and this trend isn’t likely to end soon.
