The production process for HBO’s Harry Potter television remake is picking up speed, with several actors joining the cast recently. Since the reboot was announced, it has faced criticism and close scrutiny from devoted fans, who will inevitably compare it to the original movie series. Given the caliber of actors like Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, and Ralph Fiennes in the original franchise, the casting choices have already sparked debate, a situation not unfamiliar given the high standards set by the previous films.
The studio has selected Luke Thallon, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, and Paul Whitehouse for their Hogwarts staff roles. They will portray Hagrid, Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Quirrell, and Filch respectively. Among the new cast members, some Potterheads might recall Paul Whitehouse, given his previous connection to the Harry Potter narrative.
Comedian Whitehouse, known for portraying the grumpy caretaker Argus Filch, has ties to the Wizarding World. Previously, he made an appearance in the Harry Potter movie franchise, although his scenes from the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, didn’t make it to the final cut due to runtime constraints. Now, Whitehouse is back to the magical realm of the Boy Who Lived, this time with a more significant role that could extend his character’s presence throughout the TV series.
Paul Whitehouse Played a Minor Role in ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’
Back in the early 2000s, my adventure with the Harry Potter universe started when I was cast as Argus Filch, but it wasn’t until 2004’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” that I got to step into this magical world. In this third film of the series, I played a flamboyant knight named Sir Cadogan, a character that brought some sparkle to Hogwarts Castle.
To individuals acquainted with the movies and books, Cadogan belongs to the group of moving, speaking portraits found within Hogwarts. These enchanted artworks possess a life-like quality, intermingling with other paintings and the physical world. They are crafted by magic users, yet their actions and responses are confined – they cannot generate original thoughts, instead repeating what they’ve been taught by those they converse with.
In the movie, Cadogan replaces the Fat Lady (Dawn French) when Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) damages her painting to enter Gryffindor’s common room. He temporarily takes on the duty of managing Gryffindor’s dormitories, but the students soon prefer listening to the Fat Lady rehearse her operatic dreams. Each house is given a secret code to access their dormitories and keep uninvited guests away, however, Cadogan frequently alters these codes, causing frustration among the students. Eventually, he is fired from his position after it’s revealed that he was the one who provided Sirius with the means to enter the common room.
In my critique, I must admit that some intriguing moments between characters, such as interactions between Professor Lupin and the Hogwarts students, were unfortunately left out from the final cut of the movie. Fear not, these scenes have been preserved for those eager to delve deeper into the film’s world, as they can be found within the Deleted Scenes feature.
Whitehouse Will Bring a Comedic Touch to Argus Filch in the ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot
In the revamped Harry Potter series, Whitehouse takes over from David Bradley in the role of Argus Filch, the new caretaker at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Filch is a Squib, which means he was born to magical parents but lacks the ability to perform magic himself. His job involves maintaining order among the students as much as possible, though he doesn’t have authority to enforce discipline. Instead, he offers his advice when needed. Mrs. Norris, a faithful cat who acts as his assistant, helps him keep tabs on rule-breaking students by serving as his eyes and ears.
In the Harry Potter movie series, Bradley skillfully portrayed the character’s grumpy side and frequently injected humor into the films. Given his extensive background in comedy, it seems Whitehouse would effortlessly add a comedic touch to his role. He has been a part of popular shows such as Harry & Paul, The Fast Show, and Harry Enfield & Chums, but he also has acting credits in films. Notably, he voiced the March Hare in Disney’s live-action Alice in Wonderland movies and played Paul the Head Waiter in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
In addition to collaborating with Michael Caine in the 2018 movie “King of Thieves” and Johnny Depp in the 2015 film “Mortdecai”, Whitehouse is now stepping into a new role, which brings significant expectations from long-term fans. Given his past work alongside the talented Bradley, comparisons are inevitable, and he will need to carefully balance emulating the character as portrayed in the novels while making the role his own.
The Casting News Has Some ‘Harry Potter’ Fans on Edge
The Harry Potter movie series boasted a remarkably skilled and legendary cast whose on-screen portrayals still echo in the hearts of fans, both new and longtime. This original cast breathed life into these characters, transporting them from books to cinema, which makes it easy for fans to feel a personal connection with those who significantly impacted their lives.
From its outset, the proposed spin-off or reboot of Harry Potter has drawn criticism from some quarters, with people arguing that it’s premature or the storyline should be left untouched due to its immense popularity and commercial success. With a film franchise generating $9.5 billion and book series earning at least $7.7 billion in sales, any individual aspiring to contribute creatively to a potential Harry Potter spin-off or reboot would likely feel daunted by the prospect.
I’ve just learned that the initial six actors selected to play the Hogwarts faculty have stirred up quite a reaction among fans. On Reddit, there’s been a flood of thoughts and opinions about the upcoming series and the casting decisions. As a supporter, I can’t help but join in on the conversation!

I must admit, it has piqued my curiosity even further. Now, I’m genuinely eager to observe their approach and witness the public response.
If this were the cast selection for the Hogwarts staff, it piques curiosity about how the response will be when HBO officially reveals their choices for the characters of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. In approximately 2027, we anticipate the debut of HBO’s Harry Potter reboot series.
