The newly announced remake of Harry Potter has found its Albus Dumbledore, and I’ve been pondering how they might optimally utilize him throughout the upcoming episodes. This television series’ first season will be an adaptation of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone book, with a total of eight episodes (approximately eight hours) dedicated to Harry’s first year at Hogwarts. Despite limited updates on casting, we do know that John Lithgow will portray Professor Dumbledore in this role. However, it’s important to note that the headmaster of Hogwarts doesn’t appear as prominently in Philosopher’s Stone as he does in later installments.
In the world of Harry Potter, Harry and Dumbledore gradually form an apprentice-master bond over time. However, in the first book, The Sorcerer’s Stone, Dumbledore is portrayed as a more enigmatic and detached character. To readers and Harry himself, Dumbledore seems almost all-knowing and divine. We don’t get to see much of his behind-the-scenes activities, but any actions he does reveal are strange and mystifying. I’m excited about Lithgow’s portrayal, as I believe he will capture these quirks perfectly. Nevertheless, I hope that in the first season of the Harry Potter series, we get to delve a bit deeper into Dumbledore’s character than what was shown in the Sorcerer’s Stone book and film.
HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Can Take Dumbledore’s Point of View In The First Episode
We Can Have A Better Understanding Of This Character Right Off the Bat
From the instant Lord Voldemort’s downfall occurred, it has become clear that Dumbledore was meticulously orchestrating Harry’s future. The venerable wizard discerned a magical force at play and merely needed to watch, assess, and subtly shift pieces around to secure a positive outcome—something we, as readers of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, were unaware of at the time. Dumbledore was simply an enigmatic figure in the periphery—constantly observing, but remaining well beyond young Harry’s comprehension. The upcoming HBO remake of Harry Potter might shed light on this hidden aspect of Dumbledore’s character.
It would be intriguing to experience the Wizarding world through Dumbledore’s eyes in the initial stages of the Harry Potter remake. From episode one onwards, we could trace Richard Lithgow’s character as he uncovers what happened to Lily and James Potter, and observe his thoughts as he realizes a one-year-old boy had thwarted Voldemort. Every few episodes could then delve into Dumbledore’s perspective, allowing us to witness his conversations with teachers about Harry, his investigations into Voldemort’s whereabouts, and more.
John Lithgow Can Answer For Dumbledore’s Puzzling Sorcerer’s Stone Behavior
Seeing Dumbledore’s Choices Behind The Scenes Would Be Valuable
Viewing Dumbledore’s character from his perspective in the first season of Harry Potter would make him more relatable right away. Moreover, this approach might help us understand some of the enigmatic actions taken by Headmaster Dumbledore during the events of Sorcerer’s Stone. It has always been puzzling why a headmaster like Dumbledore would go to such lengths to secure the titular stone, given that his own charm should have been sufficient to deter Voldemort from claiming it. The fact that three 11-year-olds managed to bypass the other protective measures suggests that they were ineffective at best. However, there must have been a rationale behind Dumbledore’s actions.
In the first season of Harry Potter, if the series decides to delve into different viewpoints, John Lithgow’s character might offer some insights. It’s possible that Albus Dumbledore would ask the faculty to devise a type of safeguard, but he would emphasize that it shouldn’t be overly challenging to bypass. This situation could perplex teachers like McGonagall, Snape, Flitwick, and others. However, as events unfold, it becomes clear that Dumbledore intentionally arranged things so that Harry would confront Lord Voldemort before the Mirror of Erised. By the end of Harry Potter season 1, we learn that every move in the story was carefully orchestrated by Dumbledore.
The Harry Potter Remake Must Come With New Answers (Without Spoiling Future Stories)
It Will Require A Delicate Balance
When HBO decides to delve deeper into the Harry Potter universe, they need to tread carefully if they choose to portray other characters’ perspectives. The Harry Potter books don’t explicitly state that Dumbledore intended the protections of the Sorcerer’s Stone to be suitable for first-year students. Including this detail in the series would be a creative interpretation, but it wouldn’t contradict the canon since there are hints in the series that Dumbledore wanted Harry to seek out the Sorcerer’s Stone himself, as suggested when he told him during his first year that he should be able to face Voldemort if he chose to.
In a potential remake of the Harry Potter series, if the creators choose to extend the narrative while staying true to the original storyline, even if certain details were previously unconfirmed, we could ultimately have a more integrated and comprehensive fictional world. This would need a delicate balance as new viewers should still experience key plot twists at the right moments. For example, in the first season of Harry Potter, Dumbledore used the Sorcerer’s Stone to lure Lord Voldemort out from hiding, but it’s crucial not to disclose the full extent of Dumbledore’s manipulations too soon. If handled correctly, the story will be enriched in the long run.
