Harry Potter: Son of Late Dumbledore Actor Doesn't Want a TV Reboot Either

As a long-time Harry Potter fan and someone who has grown up with the series, I must say I find Jared Harris’s reluctance to play Albus Dumbledore quite amusing, given his family ties to the role. However, I can understand where he’s coming from. The late Richard Harris was iconic in the role, and it would be a tough act to follow.

As a devoted Harry Potter fan, I find myself caught up in the divisive buzz surrounding the upcoming TV series from Warner Bros., promising an expanded and intricate re-telling of J.K. Rowling’s enchanting novels. With this fresh take comes the daunting task of recasting each cherished character, including Albus Dumbledore, whose unforgettable portrayal by the late Richard Harris has left a lasting impression on countless film enthusiasts. The weight of such an iconic role is undeniable, especially for a character as central to the Harry Potter story as Dumbledore himself.

Interestingly, contrary to expectations, it’s Jared Harris, the actor himself, who seems reluctant to take on the role of the new Dumbledore.

During an interview with The Independent’s Go to Bat, Jared Harris politely declined the offer of playing the new Dumbledore, expressing his disinterest in portraying a role once played by his late father. Moreover, he appeared critical of the concept of rebooting the Harry Potter series, stating that the movies were already exceptional and should not be tampered with, as he put it, “Why do it? I don’t understand. The films were fantastic – let them be.

It would have been delightful for fans who adore Richard Harris to see Jared Harris portray Dumbledore, but unfortunately, that won’t come true. However, another potential casting choice for the new Dumbledore that some fans find intriguing is Gary Oldman, who has expressed interest in the role: this could serve as an exciting Easter egg.

I’m quite fond of Sirius, but I felt he didn’t appear often enough in the story. I think they might introduce an entirely new cast eventually. Perhaps in a few years, I could even take on the role of Dumbledore.

Having Alfred Molina portray Dumbledore would undoubtedly delight many fans, as he is a reliable choice given his exceptional performance as one of the most cherished characters, Sirius Black, in the initial films. With his current status as one of the most admired character actors around, there’s no doubt that Dumbledore wouldn’t be out of his grasp if you’ve seen his performance in Apple TV’s “Slow Horses”.

Credit is due to Jared Harris, who has softened his stance on the possibility of a “Harry Potter” television series. He believes that there is extensive storytelling potential in such a show, which he thinks could delve deeper into aspects like the development of Harry and Ginny’s relationship, compared to what films might offer. Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, has expressed similar thoughts, expressing hope for a “Harry Potter” TV series that can devote more time to such intricate character relationships.

The Harry Potter television reboot is set to premiere on HBO in 2026.
