During an interview for his movie “The Rule of Jenny Penn“, the seasoned actor expressed enthusiasm about joining the production, acknowledging that it wasn’t a simple decision due to the significant time investment needed. Lithgow understands that this role could be one of the last major projects in his distinguished career, yet the appeal of being involved with the Harry Potter universe was strong. He is “thrilled” to contribute to the upcoming show.
Apparently, this was completely unexpected for him. During the Sundance Film Festival, he received another call offering him a role in a film, and it wasn’t an easy choice because it will significantly impact his final career phase, he fears,” Lithgow shared with Screen Rant. “However, I’m thrilled about it. There seems to be renewed interest in Harry Potter by some remarkable individuals. That’s why making the decision was so challenging. By the time we wrap up, I will be around 87 years old, but I’ve agreed to participate.
A few weeks ago, it was initially announced that Michael Lithgow had secured a role in the upcoming production. Although HBO seems to be considering several candidates like Brett Goldstein and Paapa Essiedu for significant parts, Lithgow is the first to be confirmed for the project. The news of Lithgow playing Dumbledore has sparked differing opinions. Although he’s a two-time Academy Award nominee, his participation goes against a notable casting convention from the movies as all principal characters in the films were played by British actors; however, Lithgow is an American.
The upcoming HBO television series based on the Harry Potter books is being marketed as a “loyal representation” of the book collection, referred to as a “decade-long voyage.” It’s set to debut in 2026, with plans for filming to start this summer. There’s been talk that Oscar winner Cillian Murphy might be considered for the role of Professor Quirrell.
