As a movie critic who has been following the magical world of Harry Potter for decades, I must admit that the prospect of a reboot brings both excitement and trepidation. Having seen Ralph Fiennes bring Lord Voldemort to life with such chilling precision, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia. Yet, if the rumors are true and Cillian Murphy is set to don the iconic robe and hood, I am all for it.
Ralph Fiennes has expressed readiness for another actor, such as Cillian Murphy, to take on the role of Lord Voldemort in the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV reboot. Although HBO is reportedly considering Murphy for the part, Fiennes has also hinted that he might be open to reprising his role if given the opportunity. (This version maintains the original structure and essence while making it more conversational and accessible.)
Cillian is an exceptional actor, and that’s a great idea! I’d wholeheartedly support Cillian, as Fiennes expressed when discussing casting rumors. Many fans have remembered that back in 2022, Fiennes told Variety he would consider reprising his role as Voldemort if asked. At the time, HBO hadn’t announced its series yet, but since the Fantastic Beasts series was still going strong and the Harry Potter franchise tends to remain active for long periods, it’s not surprising that speculation is rampant.
At the given moment, Fiennes expressed his openness to collaborate with Rowling once more, despite her public stance against transgender rights. He shared this sentiment with The New York Times, stating: “J.K. Rowling has penned remarkable books about self-discovery and personal growth for young individuals. It’s all about becoming a better, wiser, more ethically sound person. The harsh words aimed at her are despicable, they’re repugnant.
It’s uncertain whether expressing support for J.K. Rowling will benefit or harm actors seeking roles in the upcoming Harry Potter productions. In 2020, when Rowling started vocalizing against transgender rights, Warner Bros. emphasized their commitment to inclusivity without directly referring to her. However, recently HBO executive Casey Bloys confirmed that Rowling remains deeply involved in the new adaptations of her books.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been part of the movement that decided to distance ourselves from all Harry Potter and Wizarding World merchandise for quite some time now. The reasoning behind this choice is simple: we understand that any interaction with the content inadvertently supports J.K. Rowling, empowers her, and bolsters her public presence.
So far, the only casting rumor for Harry Potter is Oscar winner Mark Rylance, who is reportedly being considered for the role of Dumbledore. According to Variety, Rylance hadn’t even been approached about the idea last month, so it’s unclear if he would be interested. Other than that, the series is in pre-production with a projected release date of 2026.
