Harry Potter’s Tom Felton Announces His Return as Draco Malfoy

Tom Felton’s mischief isn’t quite managed.

Indeed, it was revealed that the actor who played Harry Potter’s co-star will be stepping back into the enchanting universe to reprise his part as Slytherin’s Draco Malfoy. However, instead of appearing on the silver screen, he’ll now be performing on stage.

Tom is set to make his way to Broadway for the mature role of Draco in “Harry Potter and The Cursed Child,” with his performances starting in November for a span of approximately 19 weeks.

In a surreal moment, the 37-year-old expressed, during his June 5 interview on Today with Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, that it feels like a dream. He let go of that character 16 years ago, but now he’s able to slip back into those shoes, this time as a father in a fresh narrative.

In truth, I found myself immersed in the captivating tale of “Harry Potter and The Cursed Child,” a story that unfolds 19 years post the Battle of Hogwarts. This narrative chronicles an unforeseen bond between Scorpius Malfoy, son of Draco, and Albus Severus Potter, Harry and Ginny’s offspring, who were both placed in Slytherin House.

For Tom, who spent much of his youth playing the complex character Draco Malfoy in all eight Harry Potter movies, it’s thrilling to have a chance to further develop this role and take it to new heights.

He clarified that the play is a standalone story, distinct from the Harry Potter movies I grew up watching. “The narrative begins 19 years later,” he said, “meaning we’re no longer the children we once were. Instead, we’ve become parents. So while it’s a return to an old character for me, it also involves stepping into uncharted, unfamiliar realms.

Regarding Draco, he remarked, “I’ve known him pretty well growing up. As for his adult self, not so much. That’s what makes our future interactions intriguing for me.

Apart from making history as the initial original cast member from the Harry Potter series to appear in this theatrical performance, Tom’s casting also signifies his Broadway debut on stage.

Not only is it a big deal that Tom, being an original Harry Potter cast member, is joining this theater production, but it’s also the first time he’ll be performing on Broadway.

He mentioned, “Getting emotional is extremely effortless for me,” and then he shared, “When they placed my wig during the play, I instantly burst into tears. It felt remarkably like a flashback to the past. Something I hadn’t expected to experience again.

Tom’s selection is happening during a thrilling time for Harry Potter enthusiasts at large, since several actors chosen to bring the book’s characters to life on the upcoming HBO Max TV series have recently been disclosed.

They are eager for audiences worldwide to see their enchanting collaboration onscreen. The producers also extended gratitude to the multitude of children who tried out for roles. In December 2024, news broke out that Paapa Essiedu, a promising actor known for his work on both stage and screen, was being considered to portray Professor Snape – a character famously played by the late Alan Rickman in the films. Essiedu gained recognition through his role in the HBO series “I May Destroy You.

The seasoned actor John Lithgow is set to take on the role of Professor Dumbledore, headmaster at Hogwarts, in the upcoming HBO series. With a vast array of roles under his belt, such as those in ‘Conclave’, ‘Dexter’, ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’, and ‘The Crown’, Lithgow’s impressive resume speaks for itself. Moreover, he has garnered an impressive collection of accolades, including six Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Tony Awards, and two Academy Award nominations.

Lithgow stated to ScreenRant in February 2025 upon confirming his casting, ‘Making this decision wasn’t simple as it will shape the final phase of my career. However, I’m thrilled… I’ll be around 87 years old by the wrap party, but I agreed.’

Dumbledore was previously played by the late Richard Harris and then by Michael Gambon.

It appears that British actress Janet McTeer is said to be discussing terms for portraying Professor McGonagall, who serves as the head of Gryffindor and Hogwarts’ Deputy Headmistress. Throughout her extensive career, McTeer has appeared in shows such as Ozark, Jessica Jones, and Sorry for Your Loss. Notably, the late Dame Maggie Smith previously played this role in the film series.

By March 2025, Variety announced that comedian Nick Frost was close to finalizing a deal to portray Hagrid, the half-giant character. Notably, Frost gained popularity through his collaborations with Simon Pegg in movies like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”. Upcoming, you’ll see him in Universal’s live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon”. In the original films, Hagrid was brought to life by Robbie Coltrane, who passed away in 2022.

In April 2025, it was revealed that five-time BAFTA award winner Paul Whitehouse would be assuming the role of Hogwarts caretaker Filch, previously played by David Bradley in the films. Notably, Whitehouse has a significant background in British comedy, and interestingly enough, he had also appeared as Sir Cadogan, one of the living portraits, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Among the new cast members, it’s possible that Luke Thallon, an up-and-coming talent in theater, may be relatively unknown. He is set to take on the role of Harry’s initial Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. On the other hand, Ian Hart, who previously played Quirrell, a character notable in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” has already made a lasting impression in the series.
