Has ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ Been Canceled? Could Robert Pattinson’s The Batman Enter James Gunn’s DCU? Delays and Reveals Could Indicate a Major DC Shake Up

As a lifelong comic book fan and film enthusiast, I must say that the recent developments surrounding Batman in James Gunn’s DC Universe have left me both excited and puzzled. Having grown up watching Tim Burton’s Batman and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, I can appreciate the various interpretations of the iconic character. The cameo in Creature Commandos confirms that Batman is already an established hero in Gunn’s DCU, which is fantastic news for fans like me.

However, the lack of clarity about how he will be integrated into the main storyline and the delays in both The Batman 2 and Batman: The Brave and the Bold leave me with a sense of uncertainty. As someone who has seen studios make questionable decisions based on what worked in the past (ahem, dark and gritty Superman), I’m hesitant to get my hopes too high for a seamless integration of Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the primary DCU.

In the end, I can only cross my fingers and hope that Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the past and instead takes a thoughtful approach to crafting an engaging and consistent narrative for Batman across multiple platforms. And let’s be real, if they mess this up, they might as well just give me a call, I’ll write the script for them – for a small fee, of course! (Just kidding, kind of…)

In a recent development, Batman has officially debuted within the DC Universe in the comic series ‘Creature Commandos’. Interestingly, it appears that the production of his upcoming films, namely ‘The Batman 2’ and ‘Batman: The Brave and The Bold’, is experiencing some delays off-screen.

As a long-time comic book fan with memories of flipping through the pages of my tattered copies of “Detective Comics” and “Batman”, I can’t help but wonder if the recent turmoil behind the scenes at DC could have an impact on Batman’s future in the DCU. With all the changes happening, it feels like Gotham City itself is under siege, and our beloved Dark Knight may be caught in the crossfire. I hope that whatever decisions are being made will ultimately serve to strengthen Batman’s story and keep him as a vital part of the DC Universe for years to come. It’s a challenging time for comic book fans like myself, but I remain optimistic that our favorite characters will continue to inspire us and provide the escapism we all crave in these uncertain times.

For many years, Batman has played a crucial role in both DC Comics stories and movies, and continues to be central in the revamped DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Recently, fans caught their first (admittedly vague) sneak peek of the new DCU Batman in the animated series “Creature Commandos.” Since then, social media has been abuzz with speculation, meticulously analyzing every aspect of his design. Nevertheless, James Gunn has made it clear on multiple occasions that nothing is finalized as of now.

Simultaneously, it seems that significant live-action productions such as “The Batman 2” and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” are experiencing changes, leaving uncertainty about the actual direction of Batman’s silver screen journey ahead.

Batman in Creature Commandos and Gunn’s Comments

This week’s installment of “Creature Commandos” delved into the backstory of Dr. Phosphorous, which unfolded in the heart of Gotham City.

Following the tragic loss of his family, Phosphorus acquired radioactive bone abilities and sought retribution against local gangsters, eventually joining their ranks himself. This is where we see our first glimpse of “DCU Batman” in a brief rooftop scene. He manages to overpower Phosphorus, who is subsequently imprisoned at Belle Reve.

Spoilers for Creature Commandos!

As a lifelong fan of DC Comics, I must say that the upcoming version of Batman from DCU is truly exciting! Having grown up with the classic depictions of Batman, I’ve always been fascinated by his dark and complex character. The longer cape, white lenses, and trunks give this new version a fresh yet familiar look that I can’t wait to see in live-action. I have high hopes for the team behind DCU to bring this iconic hero to life in a way that stays true to his roots while also offering something new and exciting for fans like myself. I eagerly await the release of this new adaptation, as it promises to deliver an incredible experience that will undoubtedly be worthy of Batman’s legacy.

Initially, fans quickly delved into scrutinizing each detail of this brief appearance, but James Gunn later explained that the design was intentionally kept “unspecific.

As per Gunn’s statement, the initial plan for the team involved a more extensive appearance of Batman, but he wasn’t prepared to finalize specific visual aspects at that stage, given that “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” was yet to approach.

Gunn explained to Rotten Tomatoes:

Initially receiving it, there were many scenes featuring Batman which I wasn’t prepared for. I kept repeating, ‘I’m not ready! I’m not ready!’ Instead, I found myself asking for more shadows or silhouettes.

He emphasized further that the appearance of this cameo served primarily to establish Batman’s presence in the DCU narrative timeline and subtly suggest that he is an established, recognized character.

It’s a clever method to establish that Batman is indeed a character within our universe. Similar to how we watch the Superman film and understand that Superman is already present in Metropolis, we don’t need to rehash his origin story. Instead, it’s a way of implying that Batman is already a part of this world, playing a significant role, and making an impact on it, even taking down formidable villains like Phosphorus, who poses a serious threat.

As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t help but share an exciting tidbit: Director James Gunn himself has hinted that the upcoming Batman will eventually cross paths with Superman in the DC Universe.

He declared, ‘This is DCU’s Batman.’ Let me tell you something, I have an affection for Batman that runs deep. I’ve cherished him since my childhood days. He ranks high among my favorite characters. You might recall me expressing this fondness when I was at Marvel, stating Batman as my top pick. I’m excited about the amazing things we’re going to achieve with him. He’s a global phenomenon and I can hardly wait for people to witness more of him, alongside Superman.

Is Batman: The Brave and the Bold Still Happening?

Although Batman debuted officially within the DC Universe, there remains an air of mystery as to how exactly he’ll fit seamlessly into it.

In production are two projects featuring Batman: “The Batman 2” starring Robert Pattinson and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”. Each explores distinct interpretations of Bruce Wayne. Despite having considerable advance notice, neither film has a finalized script at this point, which is causing some bewilderment among fans. One might wonder why Batman, such a pivotal figure in the DC Universe, isn’t receiving immediate attention from Gunn and the creative team at DC?

Further complicating matters, The Batman 2 was recently delayed an entire year to October 2027.

Under the new DC Studios flag, the show “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” is designed to align seamlessly with Gunn’s unified DC Universe. Conversely, “The Batman 2” continues as a standalone Elseworlds project, existing separately from the main narrative of the DC Universe storyline.

It’s worth noting that Warner Bros., in its approach, tends to lean towards more traditional or conventional storytelling. This is the studio behind the somber, brooding Superman portrayed in the unsuccessful Snyderverse, a universe that emerged due to the outstanding performance of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. With Batman’s success and his dark, gritty persona, Warner Bros. seemed to conclude that all superheroes should follow this darker, grittier template.

This was what I affectionately refer to as a freaking stupid idea.

Under new management at Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav now holds the highest position, yet the inaction regarding the Batman projects appears strikingly reminiscent of traditional Warner Bros. studio meddling.

So, why now?

Could it be that the creators of the HBO series titled “The Penguin,” which shares a universe with Batman, are receiving much acclaim and anticipation? Given its outstanding reviews and popularity on Max, one might speculate whether Warner Bros. studio executives are considering integrating Robert Pattinson’s Batman character into the main DC Universe to leverage the success of his own universe. If this were to happen, would it potentially lead to the abandonment of plans for Batman: The Brave and The Bold, a series that aimed to delve into Batman’s relationship with his son, Damian Wayne?

As an ardent movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my personal musings about the potential changes in the upcoming DC films, particularly those related to James Gunn. It’s crucial to stress that no formal announcements have been made by Warner Bros. Discovery or Mr. Gunn himself. However, recent behind-the-scenes adjustments, project postponements, and past patterns in the industry have ignited discussions about this theory. This is all speculation at this point, a fascinating conversation starter for us fans.

In the ‘Creature Commandos’, a cameo implies that Batman is well-known in James Gunn’s version of the DC Universe. However, there remains much speculation about what lies ahead for Batman on the silver screen.
