As a long-time horror enthusiast and fan of Mike Flanagan’s chilling storytelling, the prospect of him venturing into the DC Universe fills me with exhilaration that can only be compared to the anticipation I feel when I’m about to watch one of his terrifying masterpieces. The man has shown time and again that he possesses a unique ability to weave tales that both haunt and captivate, and I have no doubt that he would bring that same level of skill to any project within the DC Universe.
Mike Flanagan, who has predominantly directed horror films throughout his career, seems to be yearning for a shift in genre. During a recent appearance at FanEXPO Canada, he expressed his admiration for James Gunn, both personally and professionally, stating that he’d welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Gunn on DC Studios’ upcoming projects.
During his panel, Flanagan expressed his deep admiration for James Gunn both personally and professionally, adding that he’d jump at the chance to join the world that Gunn has created.

Before he joins the DC Universe, however, Flanagan will be tackling a new remake of The Exorcist.
In a statement issued earlier this year, Flanagan expressed that “The Exorcist” played a significant role in sparking his interest in filmmaking. He feels privileged to have the opportunity to create something innovative, daring, and fear-inducing within its universe. Additionally, the prospect of collaborating once more with the team at Blumhouse, whom he considers friends and has worked on some of his most cherished projects with, only intensifies his excitement.
What is on the DC Universe slate?
According to Gunn and Safran, the first lineup of DC Studios’ “Gods and Monsters” project will feature films such as Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. Additionally, it will include HBO Max TV shows like Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.
In their initial statement, Gunn and Safran expressed their deep appreciation for being entrusted with the care of DC characters that they have cherished since their childhood. They’re eager to work alongside exceptional writers, directors, and actors worldwide to establish a cohesive, multi-layered universe. This universe will preserve the unique creativity of each artist involved while still enabling the exploration of human potential these characters embody. Their passion for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and other DC heroes is matched only by their enthusiasm to bring these stories to life in a way that rejuvenates global cinema as they delve into some of the most magnificent, beautiful, and epic tales ever told.
In a new beginning for the DC Universe, we’ll first encounter the adventures of ‘Creature Commandos’, slated for release in December, followed by the highly-anticipated arrival of ‘Superman’ on the big screen, set for July 11, 2025.
