Havok’s Heartbreaking Decision: Is He Finally Done as a Hero?

The eighth issue of “X-Factor” introduces a new storyline titled “X-Manhunt,” written by Mark Russell and Bob Quinn. Instead of starting with X-Factor engaging in a battle against the X-Men over Professor Xavier, readers are introduced to Havok, who has recently left the team. Havok is grappling with a crisis, leaving a voice message for Polaris, which sets a significant change in his perspective about his heroic journey. Throughout the Marvel Universe’s history, Havok stands out as one of the more intriguing characters due to his long-standing role in Cyclops’ shadow, and his tenures with the X-Men and X-Factor have not been as illustrious as his esteemed brother’s.

Havok, who has faced more hardships than most, struggles more than others in the Krakoa Era of the X-Men. His message to Polaris delves into the pain and impact of loss, a theme that resurfaces later in the story. Despite being often overlooked, Havok’s current predicament is a reflection of his challenging past as an X-Man. Given his history of hardships, it’s not surprising that he’s reached a breaking point. Exploring his background reveals the heavy cost of being an X-Man.

Havok’s Life Has Been Hit After Hit in the Face

Joining Angel in the revamped X-Factor was essentially a temporary solution for Havok. The Krakoa Era marked a low point for Havok; he shifted to Summers House on the moon, yet found little solace there. His emotional turmoil, coupled with the long-term effects of mind control, led him to lose command over his powers. As a result, he was reassigned to the Hellions, a team of mutants whose emotional instability made them high-risk for other teams. It was in this setting that Havok encountered Madelyne Pryor once more. Their past is intricate and fraught; Havok developed feelings for his brother’s wife, only for her to manipulate him psychologically using her telepathy. In a tragic turn of events, he ended up taking her life during their first mission together. This event did not ease his burden, as Madelyne would later be resurrected and their relationship would resume. However, Havok found himself in a toxic cycle with Madelyne; she held significant control over him, ultimately leading to his demise. Upon being brought back from the dead by Madelyne’s magic, Havok continued to struggle under her influence.

In simpler terms, when Havok joined the new X-Factor, he was in a less than ideal state, essentially doing it out of boredom. Throughout his years as the lesser-known Summers brother, he’s faced more than his fair share of hardship and has led teams but not been an exceptional leader. His powers, which are destructive, aren’t considered among the most powerful on the team. He’s had multiple relationships that have ended, including a long-term one with Polaris and a complicated relationship with Maddie. Many view him as an object rather than a person. Enemies have often manipulated his mind, forcing him to betray friends and family. Despite being a hero, the years of suffering have left Havok damaged. In issue #8 of X-Factor, Havok has another confrontation with his brother Cyclops, one that goes beyond their usual physical fights, reflecting Havok’s broken state.

Havok Is Tired of Being the X-Men’s Punching Bag

Living as a superhero is never an easy feat, and it often involves immense pain. Readers have witnessed heartbreaking events befall their beloved heroes. Even in a universe where characters like Spider-Man suffer the loss of family, friends, partners, and even marriage, the hardships endured by Havok are particularly grueling. Given that being compared to Cyclops is already a difficult task, having been the symbol of mind control only intensified his struggles. Regrettably, Havok’s brain has been irreparably damaged due to this, resulting in him losing everything.

Despite the pieces of Havok’s life crumbling, he chooses to accompany Cargill in an attempt to rescue Xavier from the X-Men. Havok might be at his lowest point, but he’s not about to take a break or rest on his accomplishments. Living as a superhero has been the norm for him since day one. It may appear that he’s ready to call it quits, but for Havok, giving up would mean relinquishing the only thing in life he’s truly known – his heroic existence. Yet, if there was ever a character deserving of a break, it’s Havok.
