Hayley Atwell Reveals Tense Moment From Filming Doctor Strange 2 Cameo

Actress Hayley Atwell expressed some dissatisfaction regarding her brief appearance as Captain Carter in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Known for portraying Peggy Carter early on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” she reprised an alternate version of the character in 2022. While the cameo was positively received by fans, Atwell recently revealed in a podcast interview with Josh Smith on “Reign” that she wasn’t pleased with how Carter was scripted for this particular storyline. She felt her character was too easily defeated and deserved more screen time if she was going to be utilized at all.

In Atwell’s perspective, watching “Multiverse of Madness” was an instance where she felt empowered to express herself respectfully. She elaborated, “I had a brief appearance in ‘Doctor Strange,’ portraying Captain Carter, and it was almost too quick to notice. However, I found myself feeling quite irritated by the fact that this character delivers such a sharp line, ‘I could do this all day,’ only to be subsequently killed with her own shield, which seemed demeaning to me.” She continued, “It’s a humorous scene, but it felt like she was being undermined, and the moment was stolen from her.

For over a decade, Atwell had been partnered with Peggy. Seeing her character’s death portrayed as a jest, even in an altered world, was not something she found amusing. Although she was mindful not to offend anyone, she expressed her concerns about the scene tactfully. Regrettably, her input was met with resistance and sometimes downright rudeness.

In a professional setting, I approached someone of great stature without disclosing their identity, and said something along the lines of, “I’ve been thinking, might we consider… Could I propose an idea to subtly alter this scene here?” This is something I enjoy doing as it often sparks creative responses. To my surprise, he replied, “Sure, Hayley, I’ll pass the word to our esteemed editor that you have some ideas you’d like to explore. Don’t fret, I’ll make sure he receives a notification.

Atwell stated that whoever she interacted with eventually de-escalated the argument, humorously commenting: “Oh, I’m just joking. I’m just giving you a hard time. Don’t fret.” However, Atwell had an excellent comeback to this. She replied, “You can’t bully me. I’ve got a jetpack on!

In the end, Atwell didn’t reveal exactly how her feedback affected the final version of the movie, but it’s evident that Captain Carter had limited screen presence in the film’s final edit. However, there’s a possibility that Carter might be exonerated in an upcoming movie, where she plays a more significant role in the narrative. Notably, Atwell has reappeared in the MCU since then in “What If…?”, suggesting that her character’s story isn’t over yet.
