Approximately a year after a distressing health incident, the dancer delivered an emotional dance routine together with her partner, “Dancing With the Stars” judge Derek Hough, during the October 15th episode of the contest, dancing to “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone as part of the season’s Tribute Night.
The duo danced unshod, adorned in soft pink outfits, as they performed a charming and love-filled performance synchronized to the words “I hope I don’t lose you.” Their routine concluded with a tender kiss.
Hayley made a triumphant comeback to the series following her surgery on her skull last December due to a burst blood vessel. Prior to their performance, Derek shared a pre-recorded account about the frightening incident that happened during their Symphony of Dance tour in Washington D.C.
39-year-old remembered being on stage, anticipating her appearance. However, instead of her stepping out, the stage manager emerged to inform him that she wouldn’t be joining. In fact, she was experiencing severe seizures offstage, close to death.
He continued, “It’s really hard to put into words, other than just pure fear.”
Following an urgent hospital visit, the former contestant on “So You Think You Can Dance”, who tied the knot with Derek in August 2023 after eight years together, received a heartbreaking diagnosis.
In my own words, I recall the somber moment when the doctor told me, “She’s suffering from a critical brain hemorrhage, requiring immediate surgery.” He cautioned that her chances of survival were uncertain and even if she did pull through, she wouldn’t be the same person.
He recalled being told, “You basically lost the person that you knew.”
The following day, upon seeing Hayley, it was evident that approximately 40% of her skull was absent. Despite her drastic physical transformation, she retained some memories and recognized that the two of them had been dancing prior to the incident.
Derek, tearfully, shared that it was indescribable, but simply having her there, present, brought such a sense of relief to him. The woman he spoke of was none other than Hayley, his beloved spouse. Their journey together was just beginning then.
Despite doctors suggesting that I might not regain my ability to walk, I declared in my DWTS video that I am a person of unyielding resolve and tenacity, determined to take another dance step.
