As a film enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the ever-evolving world of cinema, I must admit that The Franchise left quite an impression on me. The series, which brilliantly skewered the superhero genre and Hollywood as a whole, was a refreshing breath of fresh air amidst the plethora of blockbusters flooding our screens today.
Having witnessed the rise and fall of numerous franchises throughout my life, I can attest to the fact that The Franchise captured the zeitgeist of the current superhero landscape with uncanny precision. From Marvel’s recent introspection on its own legacy to the pervasive nostalgia that seems to have gripped popular culture, the show’s creators, Jon Brown and Armando Iannucci, managed to encapsulate the unique moment in time we find ourselves in.
It is always a bittersweet experience when a series as promising as The Franchise comes to an end. However, I take solace in knowing that the talented cast and crew will no doubt continue to captivate audiences with their future endeavors. In the meantime, I’ll be rewatching all episodes on Max, hoping that one day, we might just get a reunion special or perhaps even a surprise revival!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder: if Marvel heroes could live past 80, who knows? Maybe we’ll see Iron Man and Captain America headlining the next season of Dancing with the Stars!
The franchise is wrapping up its satirical take on superheroes and Hollywood after one season, as HBO has decided not to produce a second one. HBO communicated this news to Deadline in an official statement, but despite no more seasons being planned, they expressed their appreciation for the talented cast and are eager to work with them again in the future. You can read the entire statement here below.
A representative from HBO expressed their gratitude for partnering with the exceptionally skilled group behind The Franchise, including Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and a group of hilarious actors. Although another season isn’t in the works, they eagerly anticipate future collaborations with everyone involved.
In the final episode of “The Franchise,” a series produced by Jon Brown with Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci at the helm, aired in November 2024. Boasting an impressive 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this series boasted a talented ensemble including Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Daren Goldstein, Billy Magnussen, Isaac Powell, and Lolly Adefope. Regrettably, it has been announced that the show won’t be renewed for another season.
The show coincided with an intriguing phase for the superhero genre, having experienced a thrilling two-year ride filled with monumental triumphs and equally significant letdowns. This aspect contributed to its appeal for our team, and Iannucci and Brown shared their thoughts on the current state of the industry during this unique period with ComicBook.
Indeed, that’s a thoughtful query. Currently, we’re wrapping up Season 1, which feels quite intense, similar to being in the heat of battle. Yes, they are fascinating, aren’t they? They’re going through an intriguing phase. At this moment, Marvel is particularly intriguing with its direction, and it seems to be looking back more than just pushing forward.
In essence, it’s entering a phase where it’s reflecting on its own past successes and trying to replicate that. This trend of looking back seems to be prevalent in many areas of popular culture, such as music, sports, and even in the world of heritage rock bands and football leagues.
Iannucci noted that we seem to be reminiscing about our not-so-distant past more frequently. Rather than yearning for the ’60s, it seems as though we’re longing for our immediate past, and we appear to be stuck in a cycle of nostalgia. This is quite intriguing, he added, pointing out examples like aging movie stars, action heroes, and headliners at music festivals who are now in their eighties, leaving one to wonder what’s happening. Even our sports coaches seem to be getting older by the day.
Brown mentioned that we briefly explored this topic in season one, referring to the feeling of a large studio grappling with an identity crisis or even facing potential doom, unsure about the future. These colossal studios are typically seen as permanent fixtures, but what if they fear their demise? The uncertainty is palpable,” Brown said.
All episodes of The Franchise can now be streamed on Max.
