As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the vast realms of Westeros through the captivating saga that is Game of Thrones, this latest development about a potential movie spin-off sets my heart racing with anticipation. Having spent countless hours debating theories and rewatching episodes ad nauseam, I can’t help but feel as if I’ve been granted a front row seat to the making of history – again!
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO, has verified that Warner Bros. is contemplating a potential film spin-off for “Game of Thrones.” During a press event on Tuesday, Bloys addressed rumors regarding a movie set in Westeros. Although the project exists, it’s not certain if it will proceed, and Bloys didn’t reveal many specific details about the storyline.
According to reports from Variety, Bloys mentioned that Warner Bros. is brainstorming potential movie spin-offs for “Game of Thrones” together with author George R.R. Martin. In his words: “They’re working on ideas. We’ll assess if they’re any good. We’ll review the scripts alongside them. I believe it could be enjoyable and engaging. Essentially, that’s what development is about – figuring out if there’s a story worth telling on the big screen.
Based on the limited information available, viewers can merely guess what the upcoming movie could be about. Many think it may be the new version of the rumored prequel centered around Aegon’s Conquest – the war that brought together the Seven Kingdoms into a single realm under House Targaryen. Over the past few years, speculation has circulated about this project being a film or even a series of films, but it’s never been hinted that it would be produced by HBO and not Warner Bros. instead.
Aegon’s Conquest
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the development of “Aegon’s Conquest.” Known for his work on “The Batman” and the upcoming “Terminator Zero,” screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is the mastermind behind this intriguing project. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly back in May, he shared some exciting news – he’s been consulting directly with George R.R. Martin himself!
Similar to “House of the Dragon,” an adaptation centered around Aegon’s Conquest would predominantly rely on George R.R. Martin’s historical book, “Fire & Blood.” As Tomlin stated, unlike the original series, there are fewer pages to draw from for this adaptation. However, in the pages of “Fire & Blood,” there are numerous hints that make it akin to adapting figures like Napoleon or Alexander the Great. The events themselves – who was conquered, who lived, and who died – serve as the plot. The challenge then lies in interpreting the underlying themes, emotions, and context behind these events. We don’t have direct quotes from the characters; we only have the facts of what happened.
Blackfyre Rebellions
An intriguing notion is that this film may revolve around the Blackfyre Rebellions – a sequence of conflicts occurring in the years leading up to Game of Thrones. This period, rich with action, makes for an engaging backdrop for cinematography. Furthermore, it could serve as a strategic tie-in to the forthcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which will adapt George R.R. Martin’s novellas The Tales of Dunk and Egg. These stories commence amidst the first and second Blackfyre Rebellion. While the novellas focus on a tight, intimate narrative centered around two characters, a film about these wars could provide historical context that would enrich the viewing experience for fans.
Although fans have eagerly anticipated further explorations of the Blackfyre Rebellions in books and television, there has been no significant chatter about this tale being brought to life. Nevertheless, these wars are expected to play a significant role in George R.R. Martin’s forthcoming history book, Blood & Fire, implying that it could potentially happen.
Other Ideas
Based on the extensive backstory Martin has presented regarding his fictional world, there are numerous possibilities for what this movie project might focus on. Since it’s unlikely to revisit the same topics as the TV shows, such as the Dunk and Egg novellas or the Dance of the Dragons (the subject of House of the Dragon), we can expect the films to explore new ideas that were initially intended for a TV series. This could encompass stories like The Sea Snake – a prequel centering on a young Corlys Velaryon’s voyages around the world, Ten Thousand Ships – a prequel chronicling the Rhoynish exodus from Essos to Westeros, and even Bloodmoon, an abandoned pilot that delved into the ancient “Age of Heroes” in Westeros.
Sequel
Some enthusiastic viewers are still holding onto the belief that this upcoming movie could serve as a follow-up to the controversial ending of “Game of Thrones”. It’s worth noting that this isn’t necessarily tied to George R.R. Martin’s original works, but it’s an idea that has been discussed quite a bit in the past. Interestingly, HBO has previously explored the concept of a sequel series featuring Kit Harington reprising his role as Jon Snow, and just this week, Martin hinted at a meeting with Maisie Williams too.
At this point, whatever projects Warner Bros. is developing aren’t fully fleshed out yet, and there’s no certainty that they will eventually be released. Currently, you can stream both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon on Max. The Hedge Knight is expected to debut in 2025, while Season 3 of House of the Dragon has been scheduled for 2026. George R.R. Martin’s books are available right now in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
