As a lifelong fanatic of Middle Earth, I can hardly contain my excitement over this unexpected delight from HBO Max! It’s been years since we’ve had new adventures to immerse ourselves in the enchanting world Tolkien crafted, and these two classics have long been missing from our digital libraries.
HBO Max unveils an exciting, unique treat for lovers of “The Lord of the Rings.” Unlike other popular intellectual properties like Marvel or Star Wars, “The Lord of the Rings” has been relatively quiet in recent years. While it hasn’t been completely silent, it hasn’t reached its full potential. Maybe this trend will shift in time, but for now, there’s a small, delightful offering for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy series.
The good fortune falls upon HBO Max, as they’ve successfully acquired the streaming licenses for two Lord of the Rings films – films that have not previously been streamed anywhere before.
Among these movies is the 1978 animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” directed by Ralph Bakshi. This movie amalgamates the storylines from “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers,” both based on their respective source novels.
When it debuted in 1978, the film sparked debates among critics and faced resistance from some fans disappointed by its incomplete state. However, financially, it proved successful. Regrettably, no follow-up was ever made to wrap up the storyline for those who appreciated it.
Skip ahead to 2024, and it’s undeniably a cult favorite, yet astonishingly, many who appreciate the series haven’t had the chance to watch it. This is largely due to the fact that the film has never been accessible on any streaming service, until now.
Another Lord of the Rings-related title, The Hobbit from Rankin/Bass and Topcraft (1977), is making its debut on HBO Max. This animated musical TV special originally aired on NBC and later won both a Peabody Award and a Christopher Award. As its name implies, it’s an adaptation of the 1937 book with the same title.
Two timeless adaptations from The Lord of the Rings series are currently accessible on HBO Max for streaming. However, the duration they’ll remain a part of the streaming platform is yet to be determined.
