HBO Max is Killing Cartoons?! You Won’t Believe What’s Left!

HBO Max is now only streaming a few remaining classic Cartoon Network shows, as it has recently parted ways with several of its most popular series due to licensing changes over the past few years. Initially offering access to Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive library, HBO Max has experienced significant modifications in recent times, with many once-available Cartoon Network shows being taken down and made available on other platforms or disappearing completely.

Similar to how Max has switched its name multiple times between HBO Max, many beloved Cartoon Network classics have either resurfaced or stayed absent. However, with the upcoming wave of removals set for June, only one series from the Cartoon Cartoons era of the 2000s remains on streaming platforms – Courage the Cowardly Dog. This is the last of the original “classic” shows available on HBO Max (at least in the United States) following this long period.

HBO Max Loses More Cartoon Network Classics

After taking down “The Powerpuff Girls” by June, HBO Max currently only retains “Courage the Cowardly Dog” from its classic offerings of Cartoon Network shows. However, there’s a glimmer of hope for the brand on this streaming platform, as another show from the 2010s era is still hanging on. Specifically, “Adventure Time” remains, with “Craig of the Creek” being the last modern show from Cartoon Network Studios that HBO Max continues to carry. This indicates a significant decrease in the strength of the once-powerful network brand.

Although some other series are getting relicensed for streaming on HBO Max, Cartoon Network has seen a significant reduction in its presence on this platform and is quite different from its initial appearance. For fans based in the United States, it’s now necessary to switch to alternative streaming services to watch these beloved classics. Interestingly, Courage the Cowardly Dog, which serves as the last classic Cartoon Cartoons series, mirrors its protagonist’s situation – always battling challenges in isolation out in the middle of nowhere.

What’s Going On With HBO Max?

Warner Bros. Discovery is still making significant adjustments to HBO Max, with the most notable being a name reversion to simply HBO Max after briefly dropping the “HBO” from its title earlier. It appears that this transition may also involve alterations in their content library, including an increased focus on shows produced by Warner Bros., such as the upcoming series, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, which will be available on other streaming platforms too, starting later this year.

In a novel turn of events, the fresh season of “The Oddly Marvelous World of Gumball” is set to premiere exclusively on Hulu (and Hulu via Disney+) within the United States, while international viewers can catch it on Cartoon Network. Previously, “The Oddly Marvelous World of Gumball” was among HBO Max’s offerings; however, its latest series will now stream solely on Hulu, hinting at potential future changes in HBO Max’s library. This shift might eventually lead to Cartoon Network’s departure from HBO Max altogether if current trends continue.
