On Thursday, I received some mixed emotions as a fan of The Righteous Gemstones. HBO confirmed that Season 4 will be its final chapter, set to premiere in March. As much as I’m thrilled to have the musical dramedy return so swiftly, the sudden ending still leaves me feeling a bit hollow. It’s been almost two years since we last saw the Gemstone family saga unfold on our screens, and as of now, the specific premiere date for the final season remains undisclosed. Series star and creator Danny McBride shared his thoughts with Variety about the finale, hinting that he is prepared to conclude this project.
McBride expressed that he was told it’s time to conclude the story, just as if a higher power had spoken. He explained that this season has brought closure to the themes, concepts, and characters in The Righteous Gemstones, making his eight-year journey with the team truly rewarding. There are exciting resolutions, surprises, and unexpected turns ahead in the final season, he added.
The show, “The Righteous Gemstones,” follows the lives of a family who are televangelists and pastors of a megachurch. This family includes the patriarch Dr. Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), his eldest son Jesse (McBride), his youngest son Kelvin (Adam Devine), his daughter Judy (Edi Patterson), and Jesse’s wife Amber (Cassidy Freeman). The series debuted in 2019 and has been a successful, albeit somewhat contentious, television series.
In my humble opinion as a movie enthusiast, Season 4 promises an enthralling conclusion to the complex power struggles within the Gemstone family and their church. As per the official synopsis, we can expect the self-indulgent offspring of the family to seize control over the Church, only to find out that ruling isn’t as simple as they thought, and their lavish lifestyle comes with unexpected consequences.
McBride initially expressed a desire for the Gemstones series to be his longest project yet. In a 2019 interview with Polygon, he remarked, “If I had my way, when this is over, it would be like an epic, sprawling story, something akin to The Thorn Birds. You’ll come to know every member of this family – cousins, great uncles, and more. In my perspective, this season serves as chapter one. It’s laying the groundwork for who these people are and what’s to come.
It seems that McBride has managed to fit a multitude of ideas and characters into the series, even as we approach its fourth season premiering in March on HBO. If you haven’t seen it yet, catch up with the first three seasons currently available for streaming on Max.
