HBO Unveils New Harry Potter Trio: Meet the Next Generation of Wizards!

There’s no need to use a “revelio” spell; HBO has officially announced the cast for Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley for its upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series.

Here are the young actors who got their Hogwarts invitations: Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role of the Chosen One, Arabella Stanton shines as the most brilliant witch her age, and Alastair Stout plays the role of the second youngest Weasley sibling with his red hair.

Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod expressed their excitement in a statement, revealing that they can hardly wait for audiences everywhere to see the exceptional acting skills of these three distinct performers, as they work together onscreen. They also acknowledged all the numerous kids who tried out, finding it rewarding to unearth the abundance of promising young talent.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: Following in the magical footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, these three rising talents are making their mark on the entertainment industry. Notably, James McLaughlin’s significant credit is in the upcoming comedy film “Grow,” Olivia Staunton had a captivating run on the stage as Matilda in the West End’s “Matilda,” and Harry Potter serves as Harry Stout’s first major role.

It’s great news that they have a talented group of experienced actors, along with some fresh faces, who will be joining them throughout the journey. The addition of McLaughlin, Staunton, and Stout to the cast was recently announced, following the confirmation of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrel.

Every casting announcement has sparked great excitement among fans, with some fans even approaching Lithgow at airports months prior to the confirmation of his role as Dumbledore, due to ongoing speculation about the casting.

Even though it’s been over a decade since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two” was first released, supporters of the series continue to eagerly anticipate any new content connected to the franchise.

It’s partly what influenced Lithgow to accept the role.

79-year-old actor shared with ScreenRant in a recent interview that there’s renewed interest among some fantastic individuals towards the world of Harry Potter. He mentioned this is what made the decision a tough one for him, as he will be around 87 years old by the time filming wraps up, but he has agreed to participate.

He mentioned that it will significantly shape the final part of his life, though he’s a bit apprehensive. However, he’s also quite enthusiastic about it.

Although fans must hold off a bit longer before receiving their Hogwarts acceptance letters (with the first part set to launch around 2026), there’s plenty to look forward to regarding the new cast of Harry Potter characters. Continue reading to uncover more about this upcoming generation!

Fresh faces, Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will don the Gryffindor robes, respectively portraying Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley in a new adaptation. They are replacing Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who brought these iconic characters to life on screen from 2000 to 2010 within the film series.

Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, the executive producers of our TV adaptation, were thrilled by the exceptional abilities of these three distinct actors and can hardly wait for everyone to see their enchanting collaboration on screen,” they shared. “We’re grateful to the countless children who tried out. It’s been a joy to uncover the wealth of talent among young aspiring performers.

By December 2024, it became known that Paapa Essiedu, an Emmy-nominated British actor, was considering taking on the part of Professor Snape, who had been famously played by the late Alan Rickman in the films. Essiedu is a rapidly ascending talent in both theater and film, with his performance in the HBO series “I May Destroy You” being particularly memorable.

The esteemed actor John Lithgow has been announced to play the role of Professor Dumbledore, headmaster at Hogwarts, in the upcoming HBO series. With a wealth of experience, his resume includes hits like ‘Conclave’, ‘Dexter’, ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’, and ‘The Crown’. To add to his impressive achievements, Lithgow has garnered multiple awards, including six Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Tony Awards, and even two Academy Award nominations.

In making this decision to take on the role, I must admit it wasn’t a simple choice. This project will undoubtedly shape the final act of my career, and that’s a daunting prospect. However, the excitement I feel about being part of it is overwhelming. By the time we wrap up, I’ll be approaching 87 years old, but the anticipation has me saying yes without hesitation.

Dumbledore was previously played by the late Richard Harris and then by Michael Gambon.

It is said that the British actress Janet McTeer is allegedly discussing terms to portray Professor McGonagall, who serves as the head of Gryffindor and Hogwarts’ Deputy Headmistress. McTeer has had a lengthy career with roles in shows like “Ozark,” “Jessica Jones,” and “Sorry for Your Loss.” Dame Maggie Smith, who sadly passed away, previously played the role in the film series.

By March 2025, Variety announced that comedian Nick Frost was close to signing a contract for portraying the half-giant character Hagrid. Known for his work alongside Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Frost is set to appear next in Universal’s live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. The original films’ Hagrid role was played by Robbie Coltrane, who passed away in 2022.

Come April 2025, HBO revealed that five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse would be assuming the role of Hogwarts caretaker Filch, a part previously played by David Bradley in the films. Notably, Whitehouse is recognized for his humor work in the UK, and interestingly enough, he had also appeared as Sir Cadogan, one of the living paintings, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

As a dedicated follower of the Harry Potter saga, I’d like to shed light on an emerging talent in our new cast – none other than Luke Thallon. This promising actor is making waves in the theater scene and will bring Harry’s first Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to life. On the other hand, Ian Hart, who you might remember as Quirrell from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, previously took on this role.
