HBO’s adaptation of Harry Potter has cast a popular British actor as Hagrid. With Harry Potter, there are few intellectual properties more famous or influential. The books were massive successes on their own, but Warner Bros. amplified this by creating movies, video games, merchandise, and theme parks, turning Harry Potter into a cultural phenomenon that’s endured for nearly 20 years since the conclusion of the books. Even though the films ended about 15 years ago, save for the less popular Fantastic Beasts series which was terminated after its third installment fell short of expectations, this didn’t significantly harm the IP.
Since David Zaslav assumed control at Warner Bros, there were whispers about the company considering new Harry Potter films, potentially based on J.K. Rowling’s play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This narrative revolved around Harry Potter as a grown-up and his children attending Hogwarts. However, it seemed unlikely due to actors like Daniel Radcliffe expressing reluctance about revisiting the Harry Potter series. Instead, Warner Bros is opting for an alternative approach by launching a new Harry Potter TV series on Max. The series plans to adapt one book per season, with the intention of utilizing the extended runtime of a TV season to incorporate material from the books that the films couldn’t.
Harry Potter TV Series Casts Nick Frost as Hagrid
Presently, we’re still figuring out the details, but for some time now, a cast has been gathering for the Harry Potter TV series. As of yet, we don’t have information on who will portray Harry, Hermione, or Ron. However, we do know that John Lithgow is set to play Professor Dumbledore, and it seems that Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost might be playing Hagrid. According to recent reports from Deadline, Frost is in negotiations for the role of the half-giant and cherished companion to the three young wizards. Additionally, an article mentions that Frost hinted at something significant on his Instagram on March 20th and has started following John Lithgow and Severus Snape actor Paapa Essiedu, stirring lots of curiosity among fans.
Currently, HBO has chosen to keep quiet about casting details and has only commented to Deadline that they’ll discuss such matters once agreements are complete. However, Nick Frost is an excellent choice for Hagrid and should fit the character well in the upcoming Harry Potter series. Unlike the films which predominantly used a British cast, the HBO show appears to have fewer restrictions in this regard. As Lithgow is an American actor, it’s plausible that other Americans could appear in the Harry Potter series too. Despite this, it seems like the show will still feature a primarily British cast with actors like Nick Frost.
The upcoming summer is anticipated for the start of filming the Harry Potter television adaptation. As a result, pre-production activities are expected to intensify soon, which might include additional casting announcements in the near future. While some enthusiasts express opposition to a Harry Potter TV series, feeling that the movies were flawless and further adaptations could seem repetitive, only time will tell how this project unfolds.
