HBO's The Penguin Comic-Con Installation Evacuated After Fire Breaks Out

As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of all things Batman, I was thrilled to hear about HBO’s immersive activation for The Penguin at Comic-Con this year. The transformation of the Bloom Nightclub into the Iceberg Lounge sounded like an experience straight out of Gotham City. I had made plans with some friends to attend and explore the inner workings of Oz Cobbs’ criminal underworld.

As an excited fan at San Diego Comic-Con, I was unfortunately asked to leave HBO’s The Penguin‘s Iceberg Lounge installation due to a fire. Although information is limited, Deadline reports that those inside the Bloom Nightclub setup were instructed to evacuate and upon exiting, found multiple fire trucks and police waiting outside. Two ladders even reached the rooftop bar location. Videos from the scene depict firetrucks obstructing the road and policemen trying to clear the pathway. My thoughts are with everyone involved and I hope we all made it out safely.

At Comic-Con, The Penguin orchestrated the conversion of Bloom Nightclub into Iceberg Lounge as part of a broader initiative. This transformation is just one element of the plan, as a new trailer for the show will be unveiled the next day and extensive promotion has been underway prior to the event. The Iceberg Lounge was merely an aspect, but fans could also visit nearby bars for exclusive cocktails and merchandise. Here’s a description of the campaign from HBO.

On Fridays and Saturdays, from the 26th to the 27th of July, Max, collaborating with Giant Spoon, will metamorphose the Bloom Nightclub into the legendary Iceberg Lounge of Gotham. As visitors step into “The Iceberg Lounge Experience,” they’ll encounter the “Iceberg Descent,” a joint creation by BUCK and VT Pro Design. This captivating journey engages all senses, with advanced effects, haptic technology, interactivity, and exclusive content showcased on Samsung large screens. The descent, modeled after the subterranean entrance to Gotham’s notorious Iceberg Lounge, simulates the chaos left by The Riddler in “The Batman” (2022) movie. Guests must navigate through the wreckage to reach the party hidden beneath.

At Oz’s nightclub event, fans can join the exclusive circle of The Penguin by bravely venturing through the club’s hidden areas. This thrilling, multi-room adventure comes with free drinks, live music from renowned DJs, unique souvenirs like a Jefferson’s Bourbon tasting, and chances to take photos next to Oz’s famous purple Maserati. Delve deeper into Gotham’s criminal underworld by discovering the secret password in the main club, unlocking access to 44 Below – an exclusive area offering a more intimate look into The Penguin’s world.

“Pia Barlow, HBO and Max’s Executive Vice President of Originals Marketing, is thrilled to connect with San Diego’s dedicated fan community this year. By unveiling our latest production, ‘The Penguin,’ she aims to immerse fans in an engaging experience. Through exclusive in-show activations, they will delve deeper into the intriguing world of Oz Cobbs’s Gotham and explore connections to Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman.’ Anticipation for the series premiere in September is sure to build as a result.”
