The classic series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” is making a comeback with a fresh, live-action movie slated for release next year. One of the cast members has revealed that production on this new project will commence imminently. Originating as a Mattel toy line in the 1980s, “Masters of the Universe” has grown into a massive franchise over the years due to various projects and innovations by Mattel. Although it had its own live-action movie previously, that film deviated too much from what fans were accustomed to from the original animated series produced by Filmation.
The recently announced “Masters of the Universe” movie, produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Film for Amazon MGM Studios, has been discussed by Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, who starred as Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World”. He hinted to Deadline that filming will commence within a few weeks, and the cast is eager about the script, looking forward to starting production. If everything goes according to plan, the release date could be 2026.
Masters of the Universe Reboot Begins Filming Soon
Jóhannesson shared that preparations began back in November, and filming should start within the next week or two. So far, it’s been a mix of weight lifting and rehearsals, but they’re eagerly looking forward to diving into the project. The script is particularly enjoyable for everyone involved, making them even more enthusiastic about hitting the set. Despite his recent casting announcement in Captain America: Brave New World as Fisto, this new film is clearly something the cast can’t wait to get started on.
Johansson becomes part of an impressive ensemble for the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” live-action movie. Notably, Nicholas Galitzine is cast as Prince Adam, who gains his He-Man powers from Castle Grayskull; Camila Mendes portrays Teela, Idris Elba plays Man-At-Arms, Jared Leto assumes the role of Skeletor, Alison Brie becomes Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson takes on Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is Goat Man, Kojo Attah acts as Tri-Klops, Morena Baccarin stars as The Sorceress, James Purefoy portrays King Randor, and Charlotte Riley takes the role of Queen Marlena.
What to Know for New Masters of the Universe
I’m excitedly looking forward to next year when I’ll get to witness the big-screen debut of “Masters of the Universe,” scheduled for June 5th. Given that filming is about to begin, it seems promising that this release date will be met, unless there are unexpected obstacles backstage. This upcoming movie is a production of Escape Artists and Mattel Film, under Amazon MGM Studios. The talented Travis Knight (“Bumblebee,” “Kubo and the Two Strings”) is set to direct, with Chris Buttler penning the screenplay, while David Callaham and the Nee brothers (Aaron and Adam) provided initial drafts for the script.
In the upcoming movie, Nicholas Galitzine, who plays He-Man, hinted at a significantly distinct take compared to the original animated series, stating, “To put it simply, our adaptation diverges considerably from the initial cartoon, which was undeniably camp and perfectly suited for its era. However, there have been various adaptations since then, including the ‘Revelation’ version of Master of the Universe and the comics themselves. We’re adhering quite closely to our script, almost like it’s a bible.” With filming set to start soon, updates on the project should surface shortly.
