He Was Saying He Was a King

Jorma Taccone talks about the unusual encounter he had with legendary actor Val Kilmer during their initial encounter in Hollywood.

Lately, Taccone mentioned that he drove to Malibu to chat with Kilmer about his part as the wicked Dieter Von Cunth in the 2010 MacGruber film at his residence. “Upon entering the house, I found him on the balcony…tossing what appeared to be small chips into the sea, while asking, ‘Are you a king? Are you a king?’ I was taken aback and asked, ‘What? What?’ Kilmer then returned to the room, facing away from me. He re-entered the room and began flinging what seemed like small pieces of paper at me…and I questioned, ‘What are these?’

Taccone went on to examine him, taking only a couple minutes to realize that he had been invited to Mardi Gras that year as King Bacchus, the float leader. These were small paper tokens bearing his image, which he was supposed to toss to the crowd. As it turned out, Kilmer was claiming to be a king at the time.

Later, when asked if Kilmer was rehearsing for his role as King Bacchus, Taccone stated, “No, I believe he was simply teasing me… He was such an eccentric and captivating individual, always challenging life in the most intriguing ways. He truly embodied the most fascinating mind.

Val Kilmer, who sadly passed away on April 1, 2025, started his acting journey with Off Broadway plays like “The Slab Boys” alongside Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn, and Jackie Earle Haley. He then transitioned to films and television. In 1986, Kilmer played Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the blockbuster film “Top Gun,” opposite Tom Cruise, which significantly boosted his career. The movie “MacGruber,” which hit the screens in 2010, was inspired by the extended series of sketches on “Saturday Night Live” featuring Will Forte, a humorous take on Richard Dean Anderson’s character MacGyver from the show “MacGyver.” This film saw Forte reprising his famous role alongside an array of talented actors such as Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer, and SNL veterans like Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Unfortunately, “MacGruber” was a massive flop at the box office, earning just $9.3 million against its production budget of $10 million. Critics were equally unimpressed, with some going as far as saying it “flopped spectacularly.” Despite its poor performance, a “MacGruber” streaming series debuted on Peacock in 2021, reuniting Forte, Wiig, and Phillippe for an eight-episode season before being axed.
