Since its debut, “Absolute Batman” captivated readers with its remarkable reimagining and contemporary update of Batman’s history. It skillfully combines traditional elements with innovative concepts, resulting in a unique universe that is both nostalgically comfortable and thrillingly fresh. Moreover, issue #8 reveals the initial signs of the series’ long-term storytelling ambitions and its exceptional ability to amplify its effects by expertly utilizing every available piece of Batman lore. One such instance is how “Absolute Batman” transformed the character Matches Malone from a mere joke into the emotional core of Mr. Freeze’s two-part origin story, giving him newfound significance.
Who is Matches Malone?
In the primary DC Universe, Matches Malone was a petty gangster in Gotham City, known for his thick Jersey accent and perpetual chewing stick. Though his dealings were questionable, his peers admired him for his dependability and integrity. However, one fateful night, Batman pursued him for information, leading to a shootout where Matches was accidentally killed by a bullet that ricocheted back at him. Since the incident was unclear, Batman chose to assume Matches Malone’s identity as a means to infiltrate the underworld and gather intel unavailable to an outsider. Over the years, Matches has become one of Batman’s most intriguing and comical alter egos.
In another realm entirely, Match Malone stands out as an individual character, distinct from all others. Known in earlier days as Bruce’s childhood friend, he was the man who would accept any challenge and go the extra length for those dear to him. Batman enlisted his help to fabricate work documents, enabling him access into the enigmatic Ark M. However, instead of carrying out his task, Match decided to infiltrate the prison himself, seeking knowledge. This decision ultimately cost him his life at the hands of Absolute Mr. Freeze. In issues seven and eight, a somber private eulogy for Match was held by Batman and their group of friends, during which Waylon Jones revealed a shocking secret that drastically altered our understanding of Match and the narrative up to this point.
Matches Blamed Himself for Thomas Wayne’s Death
In issue 8 of “Absolute Batman”, Waylon posed a question to Bruce, suggesting that his role as Batman could be seen as a self-sacrificing act to alleviate the guilt over his father’s death. As Bruce was taken aback by this query, Waylon added that Matches Malone’s life had followed a similar path. During the zoo attack where Bruce’s father was shot, Matches was part of Bruce’s school trip. While others sought safety in the bat enclosure, Matches stumbled and reached out to Thomas for help. A seemingly insignificant event from issue 1, where Thomas assisted one of the children, was later revealed to have significant implications for Matches’ character development.
In his remorse, Matches believed he was responsible for Thomas’ demise since he felt that if he hadn’t delayed due to saving himself, Thomas would have been with them in the enclosure. This self-blame led him to perform daring acts like infiltrating Ark M for Bruce, and it mirrored Batman’s own guilt over his father’s death. You see, Bruce also felt guilty because he was the one who won the field trip for his class, which indirectly led to his dad’s death. This self-accusation significantly influenced Bruce’s decision to become Batman and his inclination towards isolation. He thought he had to handle everything on his own, but Waylon corrected him, stating that giving in to guilt by trying to die was an easy, cowardly way out. Instead, one should live with the guilt, using it as a catalyst for personal growth and positive change in the world. This advice motivated Batman to stand alongside his companions, inviting them to join him, and provided him the resolve to endure his encounter with Mr. Freeze.
Absolute Batman is a Masterpiece
Redefining Perspectives on Absolute Batman: Matches Malone’s application has given us a fresh angle on how we should perceive Absolute Batman. Previously, we recognized it as an impressive reimagining of the Batman legend, but here we witness the strategy to maximize every minute detail in each frame. This comic transforms an insignificant image and a humorous character into a profound lesson about enduring hardships for the betterment of the world. The grim, disturbing environment serves as a catalyst for hope in a remarkable manner, making it truly captivating. I eagerly anticipate the impact of the forthcoming alterations to Batman’s history, and if this twist is any clue, they will undoubtedly create memorable moments.
